    Advanced Photodetectors for Hyperspectroscopy and Other Applications

    Hyperspectroscopy is a new method of surface image taking, providing simultaneously high position and spectral resolutions which allow one to make some conclusions about chemical compositions of the surfaces. We are now studying applications of the hyperspctroscopic technique to be used for medicine. This may allow one to develop early diagnostics of some illnesses, as for example, skin cancer. For image taking advanced MCPs are currently used, sensitive in the spectral interval of 450-850 nm. One of the aims of this work is to extend the hyperspectrocpic method to the UV region of spectra: 185-280 nm. For this we have developed and successfully tested innovative 1D and 2D UV sealed photosensitive gaseous detectors with resistive electrodes. These detectors are superior MCPs due to the very low rate of noise pulses and thus due to the high signal to noise ratio. Other important features of these detectors are that they have excellent position resolutions - 30 micron in digital form, are vibration stable and are spark protected.     Are people in residential care entitled to receive rehabilitation services following hip fracture? Views of the public from a citizens' jury.

    BACKGROUND:Access to rehabilitation services for people living in residential care facilities is frequently limited. A randomised trial of a hospital outreach hip fracture rehabilitation program in residential care facilities has demonstrated improvements in mobility at four weeks and quality of life at 12 months but was not considered cost-effective by standard health economic metrics. The current study aimed to explore the general public's views on issues involved in the allocation of rehabilitation resources for residents of care facilities. METHODS:A citizens' jury comprising 13 purposively sampled members of the general public, representative of the South Australian age, gender and household income profile. The jury considered the questions "Should there be an investment of physical rehabilitation services in residential care for older people following a hip fracture? If so, what is the best way of providing this service (considering funding, models of service delivery and equity)?" Deliberations were in the context of a state-wide health reform program. The jury was conducted over two days with an experienced independent facilitator, addressing questions developed by a steering group of research academics and clinicians. RESULTS:The mean age of the citizens' jury members was 43 (range 26 to 61). Eleven members voted for investment in outreach hospital rehabilitation services in residential aged care. All jurors agreed a number of strategies in addition to investment should be implemented, including health care planning and decision making, increased emphasis on hip fracture prevention, training of aged care staff in rehabilitation and routine provision of hospital discharge summaries to families. The jury further advocated for an increased focus on rehabilitation in residential care, potentially through accreditation criteria, increasing health literacy of residents and families, implementation of age friendly environment strategies and improving connections of care facilities with community, hospital and tertiary services. CONCLUSIONS:This citizens' jury representative of the general public recommends that regardless of dementia and frailty, people who live in residential care and are walking and fracture their hips should have access to hospital outreach rehabilitation and recovery services

    Cosmological mass limits on neutrinos, axions, and other light particles

    The small-scale power spectrum of the cosmological matter distribution together with other cosmological data provides a sensitive measure of the hot dark matter fraction, leading to restrictive neutrino mass limits. We extend this argument to generic cases of low-mass thermal relics. We vary the cosmic epoch of thermal decoupling, the radiation content of the universe, and the new particle's spin degrees of freedom. Our treatment covers various scenarios of active plus sterile neutrinos or axion-like particles. For three degenerate massive neutrinos, we reproduce the well-known limit of m_nu < 0.34 eV. In a 3+1 scenario of 3 massless and 1 fully thermalized sterile neutrino we find m_nu < 1.0 eV. Thermally produced QCD axions must obey m_a < 3.0 eV, superseding limits from a direct telescope search, but leaving room for solar eV-mass axions to be discovered by the CAST experiment.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, matches version in JCA

    The first applications of novel gaseous detectors for UV visualization

    We have demonstrated experimentally that recently developed gaseous detectors combined with solid or gaseous photo-cathodes have exceptionally low noise and high quantum efficiency for UV photons while being solar blind. For this reason they can be used for the detection of weak UV sources in daylight conditions. These detectors are extremely robust, can operate in poor gas conditions and are cheap. We present the first results of their applications to hyper-spectroscopy and flame detection in daylight conditions

    Field theory for a reaction-diffusion model of quasispecies dynamics

    RNA viruses are known to replicate with extremely high mutation rates. These rates are actually close to the so-called error threshold. This threshold is in fact a critical point beyond which genetic information is lost through a second-order phase transition, which has been dubbed the ``error catastrophe.'' Here we explore this phenomenon using a field theory approximation to the spatially extended Swetina-Schuster quasispecies model [J. Swetina and P. Schuster, Biophys. Chem. {\bf 16}, 329 (1982)], a single-sharp-peak landscape. In analogy with standard absorbing-state phase transitions, we develop a reaction-diffusion model whose discrete rules mimic the Swetina-Schuster model. The field theory representation of the reaction-diffusion system is constructed. The proposed field theory belongs to the same universality class than a conserved reaction-diffusion model previously proposed [F. van Wijland {\em et al.}, Physica A {\bf 251}, 179 (1998)]. From the field theory, we obtain the full set of exponents that characterize the critical behavior at the error threshold. Our results present the error catastrophe from a new point of view and suggest that spatial degrees of freedom can modify several mean field predictions previously considered, leading to the definition of characteristic exponents that could be experimentally measurable.Comment: 13 page

    The Error and Repair Catastrophes: A Two-Dimensional Phase Diagram in the Quasispecies Model

    This paper develops a two gene, single fitness peak model for determining the equilibrium distribution of genotypes in a unicellular population which is capable of genetic damage repair. The first gene, denoted by σvia \sigma_{via} , yields a viable organism with first order growth rate constant k>1 k > 1 if it is equal to some target ``master'' sequence σvia,0 \sigma_{via, 0} . The second gene, denoted by σrep \sigma_{rep} , yields an organism capable of genetic repair if it is equal to some target ``master'' sequence σrep,0 \sigma_{rep, 0} . This model is analytically solvable in the limit of infinite sequence length, and gives an equilibrium distribution which depends on \mu \equiv L\eps , the product of sequence length and per base pair replication error probability, and \eps_r , the probability of repair failure per base pair. The equilibrium distribution is shown to exist in one of three possible ``phases.'' In the first phase, the population is localized about the viability and repairing master sequences. As \eps_r exceeds the fraction of deleterious mutations, the population undergoes a ``repair'' catastrophe, in which the equilibrium distribution is still localized about the viability master sequence, but is spread ergodically over the sequence subspace defined by the repair gene. Below the repair catastrophe, the distribution undergoes the error catastrophe when ÎŒ \mu exceeds \ln k/\eps_r , while above the repair catastrophe, the distribution undergoes the error catastrophe when ÎŒ \mu exceeds ln⁥k/fdel \ln k/f_{del} , where fdel f_{del} denotes the fraction of deleterious mutations.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures.     Probing Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter with Neutrino Telescopes

    In models in which all of the Standard Model fields live in extra universal dimensions, the lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) particle can be stable. Calculations of the one-loop radiative corrections to the masses of the KK modes suggest that the identity of the lightest KK particle (LKP) is mostly the first KK excitation of the hypercharge gauge boson. This LKP is a viable dark matter candidate with an ideal present-day relic abundance if its mass is moderately large, between 600 to 1200 GeV. Such weakly interacting dark matter particles are expected to become gravitationally trapped in large bodies, such as the Sun, and annihilate into neutrinos or other particles that decay into neutrinos. We calculate the annihilation rate, neutrino flux and the resulting event rate in present and future neutrino telescopes. The relatively large mass implies that the neutrino energy spectrum is expected to be well above the energy threshold of AMANDA and IceCube.     Effect of interventions to reduce potentially inappropriate use of drugs in nursing homes: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials

    Background Studies have shown that residents in nursing homes often are exposed to inappropriate medication. Particular concern has been raised about the consumption of psychoactive drugs, which are commonly prescribed for nursing home residents suffering from dementia. This review is an update of a Norwegian systematic review commissioned by the Norwegian Directorate of Health. The purpose of the review was to identify and summarise the effect of interventions aimed at reducing potentially inappropriate use or prescribing of drugs in nursing homes. Methods We searched for systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials in the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ISI Web of Knowledge, DARE and HTA, with the last update in April 2010. Two of the authors independently screened titles and abstracts for inclusion or exclusion. Data on interventions, participants, comparison intervention, and outcomes were extracted from the included studies. Risk of bias and quality of evidence were assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Table and GRADE, respectively. Outcomes assessed were use of or prescribing of drugs (primary) and the health-related outcomes falls, physical limitation, hospitalisation and mortality (secondary). Results Due to heterogeneity in interventions and outcomes, we employed a narrative approach. Twenty randomised controlled trials were included from 1631 evaluated references. Ten studies tested different kinds of educational interventions while seven studies tested medication reviews by pharmacists. Only one study was found for each of the interventions geriatric care teams, early psychiatric intervening or activities for the residents combined with education of health care personnel. Several reviews were identified, but these either concerned elderly in general or did not satisfy all the requirements for systematic reviews. Conclusions Interventions using educational outreach, on-site education given alone or as part of an intervention package and pharmacist medication review may under certain circumstances reduce inappropriate drug use, but the evidence is of low quality. Due to poor quality of the evidence, no conclusions may be drawn about the effect of the other three interventions on drug use, or of either intervention on health-related outcomes
