miR-322-5p targets IGF-1 and is suppressed in the heart of rats with pulmonary hypertension
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterised by remodelling of the pulmonary vasculature leading to right ventricular hypertrophy. Here we show that miR-322-5p (the rodent orthologue of miR-424-5p) expression is decreased in the right ventricle of monocrotaline-treated rats, a model of PAH, whereas a putative target insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is increased. IGF-1 mRNA was enriched 16-fold in RNA immunoprecipitated with Ago2, indicating binding to miR-322-5p. In cell transfection experiments, miR-322-5p suppressed the activity of a luciferase reporter containing a section of the IGF-1 3âČ untranslated region (UTR) as well as IGF-1 mRNA and protein levels. Taken together, these data suggest that miR-322 targets IGF-1, a process downregulated in PAH-related RV hypertrophy
Validation of Observed Bedload Transport Pathways Using Morphodynamic Modeling
Phenomena related to braiding, including local scour and fill, channel bar development, migration
and avulsion, make numerical morphodynamic modeling of braided rivers challenging. This paper investigates
the performance of a Delft3D model, in a 2D depth-averaged formulation, to simulate the
morphodynamics of an anabranch of the Rees River (New Zealand). Model performance is evaluated using
data from field surveys collected on the falling limb of a major high flow, and using several sediment
transport formulas. Initial model results suggest that there is generally good agreement between observed and
modeled bed levels. However, some discrepancies in the bed level estimations were noticed, leading to bed
level, water depth and water velocity estimation errors

Particle interactions with single or multiple 3D solar reconnecting current sheets
The acceleration of charged particles (electrons and protons) in flaring
solar active regions is analyzed by numerical experiments. The acceleration is
modelled as a stochastic process taking place by the interaction of the
particles with local magnetic reconnection sites via multiple steps. Two types
of local reconnecting topologies are studied: the Harris-type and the X-point.
A formula for the maximum kinetic energy gain in a Harris-type current sheet,
found in a previous work of ours, fits well the numerical data for a single
step of the process. A generalization is then given approximating the kinetic
energy gain through an X-point. In the case of the multiple step process, in
both topologies the particles' kinetic energy distribution is found to acquire
a practically invariant form after a small number of steps. This tendency is
interpreted theoretically. Other characteristics of the acceleration process
are given, such as the mean acceleration time and the pitch angle distributions

It argues that the impact of these approaches has been limited by the absence of an underlying strategic orientation that would provide a value-base upon which to embed these approaches within PSOs. It argues further for such an orientation to privelege the need for public services to add value to the lives of citizens and service users and not to focus solely upon internal measures of efficiency and performance
Diffusion entropy and waiting time statistics of hard x-ray solar flares
We analyze the waiting time distribution of time distances between two
nearest-neighbor flares. This analysis is based on the joint use of two
distinct techniques. The first is the direct evaluation of the distribution
function , or of the probability, , that no time
distance smaller than a given is found. We adopt the paradigm of the
inverse power law behavior, and we focus on the determination of the inverse
power index , without ruling out different asymptotic properties that
might be revealed, at larger scales, with the help of richer statistics. The
second technique, called Diffusion Entropy (DE) method, rests on the evaluation
of the entropy of the diffusion process generated by the time series. The
details of the diffusion process depend on three different walking rules, which
determine the form and the time duration of the transition to the scaling
regime, as well as the scaling parameter . With the first two rules the
information contained in the time series is transmitted, to a great extent, to
the transition, as well as to the scaling regime. The same information is
essentially conveyed, by using the third rules, into the scaling regime, which,
in fact, emerges very quickly after a fast transition process. We show that the
significant information hidden within the time series concerns memory induced
by the solar cycle, as well as the power index . The scaling parameter
becomes a simple function of , when memory is annihilated. Thus,
the three walking rules yield a unique and precise value of if the memory
is wisely taken under control, or cancelled by shuffling the data. All this

Pattern formation and selection in quasi-static fracture
Fracture in quasi-statically driven systems is studied by means of a discrete
spring-block model. Developed from close comparison with desiccation
experiments, it describes crack formation induced by friction on a substrate.
The model produces cellular, hierarchical patterns of cracks, characterized by
a mean fragment size linear in the layer thickness, in agreement with
experiments. The selection of a stationary fragment size is explained by
exploiting the correlations prior to cracking. A scaling behavior associated
with the thickness and substrate coupling, derived and confirmed by
simulations, suggests why patterns have similar morphology despite their

The effectiveness of manual stretching in the treatment of plantar heel pain: a systematic review
Background: Plantar heel pain is a commonly occurring foot complaint. Stretching is frequently utilised as a treatment, yet a systematic review focusing only on its effectiveness has not been published. This review aimed to assess the effectiveness of stretching on pain and function in people with plantar heel pain. Methods: Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, AMED, and The Cochrane Library were searched from inception to July 2010. Studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria were independently assessed, and their quality evaluated using the modified PEDro scale. Results: Six studies including 365 symptomatic participants were included. Two compared stretching with a control, one study compared stretching to an alternative intervention, one study compared stretching to both alternative and control interventions, and two compared different stretching techniques and durations. Quality rating on the modified Pedro scale varied from two to eight out of a maximum of ten points. The methodologies and interventions varied significantly between studies, making meta-analysis inappropriate. Most participants improved over the course of the studies, but when stretching was compared to alternative or control interventions, the changes only reached statistical significance in one study that used a combination of calf muscle stretches and plantar fascia stretches in their stretching programme. Another study comparing different stretching techniques, showed a statistically significant reduction in some aspects of pain in favour of plantar fascia stretching over calf stretches in the short term. Conclusions: There were too few studies to assess whether stretching is effective compared to control or other interventions, for either pain or function. However, there is some evidence that plantar fascia stretching may be more effective than Achilles tendon stretching alone in the short-term. Appropriately powered randomised controlled trials, utilizing validated outcome measures, blinded assessors and long-term follow up are needed to assess the efficacy of stretching
Noise storm continua: power estimates for electron acceleration
We use a generic stochastic acceleration formalism to examine the power
() input to nonthermal electrons that cause
noise storm continuum emission. The analytical approach includes the derivation
of the Green's function for a general second-order Fermi process, and its
application to obtain the particular solution for the nonthermal electron
distribution resulting from the acceleration of a Maxwellian source in the
corona. We compare with the power observed in noise
storm radiation. Using typical values for the various parameters, we find that
, yielding an efficiency
estimate in the range 10^{-10} \lsim \eta
\lsim 10^{-6} for this nonthermal acceleration/radiation process. These
results reflect the efficiency of the overall process, starting from electron
