Magnesium oxide doping reduces acoustic wave attenuation in lithium metatantalate and lithium metaniobate crystals
Single crystals of lithium metatantalate and lithium metaniobate, grown from melts having different stoichiometries and different amounts of magnesium oxide, show that doping lowers temperature-independent portion of attenuation of acoustic waves. Doped crystals possess optical properties well suited for electro-optical and photoelastic applications
Measurement of the Spatial Cross-Correlation Function of Damped Lyman Alpha Systems and Lyman Break Galaxies
We present the first spectroscopic measurement of the spatial
cross-correlation function between damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) and Lyman
break galaxies (LBGs). We obtained deep u'BVRI images of nine QSO fields with
11 known z ~ 3 DLAs and spectroscopically confirmed 211 R < 25.5
photometrically selected z > 2 LBGs. We find strong evidence for an overdensity
of LBGs near DLAs versus random, the results of which are similar to that of
LBGs near other LBGs. A maximum likelihood cross-correlation analysis found the
best fit correlation length value of r_0 = 2.9^(+1.4)_(-1.5) h^(-1)Mpc using a
fixed value of gamma = 1.6. The implications of the DLA-LBG clustering
amplitude on the average dark matter halo mass of DLAs are discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical

The diffuse X-ray background
The deepest observations of the X-ray background approach the surface
brightness of the truly diffuse component generated by Thomson scattering of
cosmic X-ray photons. Available estimates of the electron density and the X-ray
luminosity density of AGNs as a function of cosmological epoch are used to
calculate the integral scattered X-ray background component. It is shown that
the scattered component constitutes 1.0 - 1.7 % of the total background,
depending on the AGN cosmic evolution. Albeit this is a minute fragment of the
total flux, it becomes a perceptible fraction of the still unresolved part of
the background and should be taken into account in the future rigorous
assessments of the X-ray background structure. This diffuse component at
energies < 1 keV sums up with the emission by WHIM to 3 - 4 %. Consequently,
one should expect that integrated counts of discrete sources account for just
96 - 97 % for soft background and ~99 % at higher energies.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, AA in prin
Cluster Correlation in Mixed Models
We evaluate the dependence of the cluster correlation length r_c on the mean
intercluster separation D_c, for three models with critical matter density,
vanishing vacuum energy (Lambda = 0) and COBE normalized: a tilted CDM (tCDM)
model (n=0.8) and two blue mixed models with two light massive neutrinos
yielding Omega_h = 0.26 and 0.14 (MDM1 and MDM2, respectively). All models
approach the observational value of sigma_8 (and, henceforth, the observed
cluster abundance) and are consistent with the observed abundance of Damped
Lyman_alpha systems. Mixed models have a motivation in recent results of
neutrino physics; they also agree with the observed value of the ratio
sigma_8/sigma_25, yielding the spectral slope parameter Gamma, and nicely fit
LCRS reconstructed spectra. We use parallel AP3M simulations, performed in a
wide box (side 360/h Mpc) and with high mass and distance resolution, enabling
us to build artificial samples of clusters, whose total number and mass range
allow to cover the same D_c interval inspected through APM and Abell cluster
clustering data. We find that the tCDM model performs substantially better than
n=1 critical density CDM models. Our main finding, however, is that mixed

Galaxy Cluster Correlation Function to z ~ 1.5 in the IRAC Shallow Cluster Survey
We present the galaxy cluster autocorrelation function of 277 galaxy cluster
candidates with 0.25 \le z \le 1.5 in a 7 deg^2 area of the IRAC Shallow
Cluster Survey. We find strong clustering throughout our galaxy cluster sample,
as expected for these massive structures. Specifically, at = 0.5 we find a
correlation length of r_0 = 17.40^{+3.98}_{-3.10} h^-1 Mpc, in excellent
agreement with the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey, the only other
non-local measurement. At higher redshift, = 1, we find that strong
clustering persists, with a correlation length of r_0=19.14^{+5.65}_{-4.56}
h^-1 Mpc. A comparison with high resolution cosmological simulations indicates
these are clusters with halo masses of \sim 10^{14} Msun, a result supported by
estimates of dynamical mass for a subset of the sample. In a stable clustering
picture, these clusters will evolve into massive (10^{15} Msun) clusters by the

Phase diagram of the Kondo necklace: a mean-field renormalization group approach
In this paper we investigate the magnetic properties of heavy fermions in the
antiferromagnetic and dense Kondo phases in the framework of the Kondo necklace
model. We use a mean field renormalization group approach to obtain a
temperature versus Kondo coupling phase diagram for this model in
qualitative agreement with Doniach's diagram, proposed on physical grounds. We
further analyze the magnetically disordered phase using a two-sites approach.
We calculate the correlation functions and the magnetic susceptibility that
allow to identify the crossover between the spin-liquid and the local moment
regimes, which occurs at a {\em coherence} temperature.Comment: 5 figure
The influence of risk factors associated with captive rearing on post-release survival in translocated cirl buntings Emberiza cirlus in the UK
Population decline resulting from agricultural intensification led to contraction of the range of the cirl bunting Emberiza cirlus in the UK to a small area of south Devon. As part of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan for the species, a project to re-establish a population in suitable habitat in Cornwall was undertaken during 2006–2011, in which chicks were removed from the nest in Devon, hand-reared and then delayed-released. The survival of the birds to four time points in the year after release was analysed in relation to the effect of rearing factors, using a multivariable logistic regression model. Individuals with higher body weight at capture were more likely to survive to 1 January and 1 May in the year following release, and individuals released in June and July were more likely to survive than those released in August. Individuals released in 2006 and 2011 had a higher survival rate than those released during 2007–2010. Timing of capture, time spent at each stage in captivity, medication and the detection of parasites in the brood had no significant effect. Immunosuppressive disease, weather factors and predator activity may have led to some of the observed differences in survival. This analysis provides evidence with which to plan future translocation projects for cirl buntings and other passerine birds
No Evidence for Orbital Loop Currents in Charge Ordered YBaCuO from Polarized Neutron Diffraction
It has been proposed that the pseudogap state of underdoped cuprate
superconductors may be due to a transition to a phase which has circulating
currents within each unit cell. Here, we use polarized neutron diffraction to
search for the corresponding orbital moments in two samples of underdoped
YBaCuO with doping levels and 0.123. In contrast to
some other reports using polarized neutrons, but in agreement with nuclear
magnetic resonance and muon spin rotation measurements, we find no evidence for
the appearance of magnetic order below 300 K. Thus, our experiment suggests
that such order is not an intrinsic property of high-quality cuprate
superconductor single crystals. Our results provide an upper bound for a
possible orbital loop moment which depends on the pattern of currents within
the unit cell. For example, for the CC- pattern proposed by Varma,
we find that the ordered moment per current loop is less than 0.013 for
