Computing Matveev's complexity via crystallization theory: the boundary case

    Get PDF
The notion of Gem-Matveev complexity has been introduced within crystallization theory, as a combinatorial method to estimate Matveev's complexity of closed 3-manifolds; it yielded upper bounds for interesting classes of such manifolds. In this paper we extend the definition to the case of non-empty boundary and prove that for each compact irreducible and boundary-irreducible 3-manifold it coincides with the modified Heegaard complexity introduced by Cattabriga, Mulazzani and Vesnin. Moreover, via Gem-Matveev complexity, we obtain an estimation of Matveev's complexity for all Seifert 3-manifolds with base D2\mathbb D^2 and two exceptional fibers and, therefore, for all torus knot complements.Comment: 27 pages, 14 figure

    Uniform random colored complexes

We present here random distributions on (D+1)(D+1)-edge-colored, bipartite graphs with a fixed number of vertices 2p2p. These graphs are dual to DD-dimensional orientable colored complexes. We investigate the behavior of quantities related to those random graphs, such as their number of connected components or the number of vertices of their dual complexes, as p→∞p \to \infty. The techniques involved in the study of these quantities also yield a Central Limit Theorem for the genus of a uniform map of order pp, as p→∞p \to \infty.Comment: 36 pages, 9 figures, minor additions and correction

Brain networks involved in the influence of religion on empathy in male Vietnam War veterans

Humans all over the world believe in spirits and deities, yet how the brain supports religious cognition remains unclear. Drawing on a unique sample of patients with penetrating traumatic brain injuries (pTBI) and matched healthy controls (HCs) we investigate dependencies of religious cognition on neural networks that represent (1) others agents’ intentions (Theory of Mind, ToM) and (2) other agents’ feelings (Empathy). Extending previous observations that ToM networks are recruited during prayer, we find that people with vmPFC damage report higher scores on the personal relationship with God inventory even when they are not praying. This result offers evidence that it is the modulation of ToM networks that support beliefs in supernatural agents. With respect to empathetic processing, we observed that vmPFC and pSTS/TPJ lesions mediated by the strength of the personal relationship with God affect empathetic responses. We suggest that the neurological networks underpinning God representations amplify human empathetic responses. The cultural evolutionary study of religion has argued that supernatural beliefs evoke pro-social responses because people fear the wrath of Gods. Our findings imply greater attention should be paid to the mechanisms by which religious cognition may regulate empathetic responses to others. Results - Descriptive statistic results. - Group analysis. - Correlation analyses. - Mediation analysis. The main goal of this research is to show how the climatological and meteorological analysis, relatively to a determinate geographical zone and with reference to a specific period of interest, are able be used in sport area for the amelioration of the athlete’s performance

First report of Erysiphe corylacearum causing powdery mildew on Corylus avellana in Spain

In the Mediterranean basin area, powdery mildew disease on hazelnut is commonly caused by Phyllactinia guttata. The disease occurs in late summer-autumn causing limited damage or economic impact. In April 2021, an unusual outbreak of the disease was observed on lower leaves of hazelnuts (cvs, Negret and San Giovanni) leading to rapid leaf desiccation in two commercial orchards (Camí de la Serra and Mas de la Coma), both located at La Selva del Camp, Tarragona, in north-eastern Spain. Unlike P. guttata, roundish spots of white mycelium appeared on the adaxial side of the leaves (Figure 1). Fruit was also infected and damaged.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Integrated optical source of polarization entangled photons at 1310 nm

We report the realization of a new polarization entangled photon-pair source based on a titanium-indiffused waveguide integrated on periodically poled lithium niobate pumped by a CW laser at 655nm655 nm. The paired photons are emitted at the telecom wavelength of 1310nm1310 nm within a bandwidth of 0.7nm0.7 nm. The quantum properties of the pairs are measured using a two-photon coalescence experiment showing a visibility of 85%. The evaluated source brightness, on the order of 10510^5 pairs s−1GHz−1mW−1s^{-1} GHz^{-1} mW^{-1}, associated with its compactness and reliability, demonstrates the source's high potential for long-distance quantum communication.Comment: There is a typing mistake in the previous version in the visibility equation.
