In the context of the considerable and global increase of public attention to political communication, the essay connects some keywords emerging from recent publications in the field. The first word is "storytelling", considered as source for a new narrative vision about political leadership, an analysis of which is provided by the evaluation of Christian Salman's book by the same title (Storytelling, 2007). The second word is "autobiography", viewed as a powerful tool to introduce the symbolic meaning of a political figure and to identify the image of a nation (such in the case of Obama and his autobiographical books). The third word is "charisma", a rather ambiguous term, crucial to understand the difference between hard, soft and smart power, as we find in Nye (The Powers To Lead, 2008) and Castells (Communication Power, 2009). While Nye suggests that charisma results from the interweaving of soft and hard authority forms, Castells underlines the increasingly relevant relationships between power and communication. The new situation is based on the unstable balance between broadcasting and on line tools. In particular, TV news run after scandals and gossip, while social networks (and in general all the new media web 2.0) announce a sort of self-mass-communication. Thus, the leaders' skill to use the "right" media at the "right" time necessarily implies comprehension of the role of technology in postmodern society
Impact of peripheral inflammation in the brain : new roles for the anti-inflammatory molecule Annexin A1
Growing evidence has shown that peripheral inflammation can trigger a central nervous
system response, sometimes worsening pre-existing neurological conditions, breaking down
the concept of brain as an immune-privileged organ.
Understanding which components contribute to periphery-to-brain communication may
help identify molecules exploitable for therapeutic intervention. Usually, inflammation is
followed by resolution: one of the main effectors in this process during peripheral
inflammation is Annexin A1, while its implications in the CNS are still unclear. This thesis
provides evidence for a new face for the molecule: we observed a well-defined expression
at blood brain barrier (BBB) at endothelial level and we detected, in vivo, significantly higher
BBB permeability in the AnxA1 null mice due to disrupted inter-endothelial cell tight
junctions, essentially as a consequence to changes in the actin cytoskeleton. Such changes
are reminiscent of early MS pathology, a relationship confirmed by detecting a selective loss
of ANXA1 in the plasma and cerebrovascular endothelium of MS patients.
Under peripheral inflammatory conditions (i.p. lipopolysaccharide, LPS), in vivo data
suggested an inherent sex difference in BBB response, while in vitro studies confirmed the
protective action of sex hormone 17β-Estradiol on the endothelium through ANXA1
modulation.
Within the CNS, we detected a constitutively higher microglial density and pro-inflammatory
environment in the Anxa1 null mouse, which worsened upon peripheral inflammation. In a
neurodegeneration model (6-hydroxydopamine), genotype-related differences in microglial
invasion occurred, while subsequent peripheral inflammatory challenges synergised and
caused worse dopaminergic neuronal loss only in the knock-out model.
These original data unveil a novel functional paradigm for ANXA1 as a “translator” between
peripheral immune system and CNS through novel pathways compared to its well-characterized
peripheral role. In addition, this study opens up a novel path to find
therapeutic applications against disorders characterized by central and peripheral
inflammation
Virgilio a Cartagine (Note a Anth. Lat. 244 R.=237 Sh.B.)
pp. 40-46This paper offers a critical edition with commentary of the Virgilian thema, 24 hexameters contained in
the Anthologia Latina, which draws inspiration from Verg. Aen. XII 653: Turne, in te suprema salus. This
composition, along with the other two Virgilian remakes contained in the Salmasian book, reflects the
scholarly practice of suasoria. Thanks to the rhetorical instruments employed, they give new interpretations
of the Virgilian contexts of reference, without which they would be incomprehensible, and may represent
exegetical forms alternative to those known by the surviving commentaries
By analyzing the celebrative epigram De Cynthio poeta and the Cynthii Cenetensis poetae Epitaphium, the essay demonstrates the good fortune and the high reputation enjoyed by the humanist Marco Antonio Amalteo amongst the Venetian-Friulian scholars of the time, with his knowledge of the authors not limited to the ancient canon of the classics, but extended to authors whose texts were still unprinted
This paper is a critical edition with Italian translation and running commentary of a text contained in the Anthologia Latina: the Praefatio (according to its title in the codex Salmasianus), a prose poem of thirteen lines. Cristante investigates the poetic register of the piece and argues that the preference for an unfamiliar and often cryptic language reveals that the text is likely to have been conceived as a message, presumably by a grammarian, addressed to a literary circle of other grammarian poets
