Educational effectiveness and improvement in developing societies. Some experiences from the Primary Education Quality Improvement Project in Indonesia
The improvement of education in developing societies might benefit from theory and research on educational effectiveness. ... The research evidence points at the importance of factors at the classroom level and the relatively small possibilities that the school and the above school level have to influence those factors at the classroom level. This is illustrated by the evaluation of the primary education quality improvement project in Indonesia, a project that aimed at the improvement of education through teacher professional development, provision of textbooks, community participation and management of schools. The results tend to support the general feeling about educational effectiveness. Conclusions stress the importance of the development of knowledge by (inter)national consultants, the content of the intervention - educational effectiveness and improvement and the adaptation of the knowledge to national and local circumstances - and procedural and technical knowledge how to design, implement and evaluate educational interventions. Conceptualizing school effectiveness
The theoretical status of existing school effectiveness models is analyzed by using perspectives from organizational theory and models of classroom effectiveness. This leads to the formulation of a basic framework for conceptualizing school effectiveness that includes variables at the levels of the school, the context of the school and the classroom, while background variables of pupils are also taken into account. One of the conclusions is that hypothesis construction and empirical research on cross-level relationships within this basic framework are of central importance to enhance our understanding of school effectiveness
Queueing models for appointment-driven systems.
Many service systems are appointment-driven. In such systems, customers make an appointment and join an external queue(also referred to as the “waiting list”). At the appointed date, the customer arrives at the service facility, joins an internal queue and receives service during a service session. After service, the customer leaves the system. Important measures of interest include the size of the waiting list, the waiting time at the service facility and server overtime. These performance measures may support strategic decisionmaking concerning server capacity (e.g. how often, when and for how long should a server be online). We develop an ew model to assess these performance measures. Scheduling Markovian PERT networks with maximum-NPV objective.
We examine project scheduling with net-present-value objective and exponential activity durations, using a continuous-time Markov decision chain. Modeling a healthcare system as a queueing network:The case of a Belgian hospital.
The performance of health care systems in terms of patient flow times and utilization of critical resources can be assessed through queueing and simulation models. We model the orthopaedic department of the Middelheim hospital (Antwerpen, Belgium) focusing on the impact of outages (preemptive and nonpreemptive outages) on the effective utilization of resources and on the flowtime of patients. Several queueing network solution procedures are developed such as the decomposition and Brownian motion approaches. Simulation is used as a validation tool. We present new approaches to model outages. Extending the production dice game.
The production dice game is a powerful learning exercise focusing on the impact of variability and dependency on throughput and work-in-process inventory of flow lines. In this paper we will extend the basic dice game along the following lines. First, we allow that the operations take place concurrently as opposed to the more traditional way of playing the game sequentially. Second, we allow both starvation and blocking of the line. Third, we consider balanced lines with work stations characterized by different degrees of variability. Fourth, we use different sets of dice in order to represent a wide range of coefficients of variation of the production line. The game can be played manually in a classroom setting, but it is also modelled as an easy-to-use simulation tool.
Healthcare queueing models.
Healthcare systems differ intrinsically from manufacturing systems. As such, they require a distinct modeling approach. In this article, we show how to construct a queueing model of a general class of healthcare systems. We develop new expressions to assess the impact of service outages and use the resulting model to approximate patient flow times and to evaluate a number of practical applications. We illustrate the devastating impact of service interruptions on patient flow times and show the potential gains obtained by pooling hospital resources. Evaluation of the users value of salts against apple scab and powdery mildew for fruit production
The research was aimed at finding anti resistance strategies for Integrated fruit growing.
As the salts tested may be approvable for organic farming, the trial results are also of
value for the development of scab an mildew control strategies for organic fruit growing. As
new fungicides are mainly unisite action fungicides, the problem of fungicide resistance
development is becoming more important every year. Combining chemical fungicides,
which is the best anti-resistance strategy, is not always possible or recommended in the
case when the number of available chemical fungicides are limited or a reduction in
fungicide use is asked for. Therefore the use of salts as an anti-resistance strategy was
looked upon. The salts evaluated were K(HCO3), KH2PO3, KHPO4 and K2SiO3. When
using these salts as an anti-resistance strategy the efficacy obtained when spraying the
compounds alone was often to low to be used in rotation with chemical fungicides. Only
with K(HCO3)2 a good efficacy can be observed in some years. The variation in efficacy
with K(HCO3)2 observed is higher for powdery mildew. K(HCO3)2 can be considered as a
ideal product for scab control in organic orchards at moments of low infection risk
Een Romeinse landelijke nederzetting te Smeermaas (Lanaken, prov. Limburg)
In de jaren 1949-1950 werd te Smeermaas
(gem. Lanaken), nabij de Ducatonweg
op de plaats Kerkveld, op muurresten met
een nis gestoten. Een jaar later voerden leden
van de geschiedkundige kring St.-Ursula
een eerste onderzoek uit. Zij schreven de
resten toe aan een oostwaarts georiënteerde
Gallo-Romeinse villa. Aangezien er een asselaag
werd vastgesteld, ging men ervan uit
dat de villa door brand werd verwoest. Een
verslag van E.H. Remans (gedeponeerd in
het museum te Tongeren in 1959) suggereert
dat de muren deel uitmaakten van de kelder
van de mogelijke villa, die via een diverticulum,
nl. de Ducatonweg, op de heerbaan
Tongeren-Nijmegen aansloot. In 1964 zou
er in Smeermaas een ondergrondse kelder
zijn gevonden, misschien iets later gebouwd
dan de in 1955 in Neerharen ontdekte Romeinse
pottenbakkersoven. In 1965 wordt
de vondst van een Romeins graf op de hoek
van de Brugstraat en de Oude Heerbaan
gemeld, waarvoor een datering tussen het
laatste kwart van de 2de en de eerste helft
van de 3de eeuw werd voorgesteld
