    Factors Associated with Revision Surgery after Internal Fixation of Hip Fractures

    Background: Femoral neck fractures are associated with high rates of revision surgery after management with internal fixation. Using data from the Fixation using Alternative Implants for the Treatment of Hip fractures (FAITH) trial evaluating methods of internal fixation in patients with femoral neck fractures, we investigated associations between baseline and surgical factors and the need for revision surgery to promote healing, relieve pain, treat infection or improve function over 24 months postsurgery. Additionally, we investigated factors associated with (1) hardware removal and (2) implant exchange from cancellous screws (CS) or sliding hip screw (SHS) to total hip arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty, or another internal fixation device. Methods: We identified 15 potential factors a priori that may be associated with revision surgery, 7 with hardware removal, and 14 with implant exchange. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses in our investigation.     Comparative fattening performance of two types of cattle in Ethiopia

    An input/out put feeding trail was conducted to compare the performance of Boran and Arsi cattle, in cattle, in Ethiopia. The cattle were introduced to feed a high molasses ration 48.5% DM, Noug seed cake 21.7% DM, Maize grain 8.6% DM, eragrostis hay 20% DM, and minerals 1.2% DM both zebu types on the feedlot were slaughtered at 73, 101, 129 and 157 days of feeding trail after splitting into uniform groups. There are 4 cattle groups per each zebu type containing 10 and 8 cattle for Boran and Arsi respectively. Over the whole feeding periods the average daily gain and dressing percentage ranges from 554 to 613 grams and 48.1% to 52.9%, and 778 to 893 grams and 47.9 to 54.5% for Arsi and Boran respectively. The Boran is significantly different and superior from Arsi interims daily gain and dressing percentage. However because of the lower feed intake of the Arsi their live weight gain response to feed input is very similar to that of Boran. The conversion ratio, a kg feed DM used to produce one kg of edible tissue were 16.75 and 17.04 for Arsi and Boran, respectively.     Metabolomics aims to measure all low molecular weight chemicals within a given system in a manner analogous to transcriptomics, proteomics and genomics. In this review we highlight metabolomics approaches that are currently being applied to the kinetoplastid parasites, Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania spp. The use of untargeted metabolomics approaches, made possible through advances in mass spectrometry and informatics, and stable isotope labelling has increased our understanding of the metabolism in these organisms beyond the views established using classical biochemical approaches.     Mesenteric lymphatic dysfunction promotes insulin resistance and represents a potential treatment target in obesity

    Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) encases mesenteric lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes through which lymph is transported from the intestine and mesentery. Whether mesenteric lymphatics contribute to adipose tissue inflammation and metabolism and insulin resistance is unclear. Here we show that obesity is associated with profound and progressive dysfunction of the mesenteric lymphatic system in mice and humans. We find that lymph from mice and humans consuming a high-fat diet (HFD) stimulates lymphatic vessel growth, leading to the formation of highly branched mesenteric lymphatic vessels that 'leak' HFD-lymph into VAT and, thereby, promote insulin resistance. Mesenteric lymphatic dysfunction is regulated by cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C-VEGF receptor (R)3 signalling. Lymph-targeted inhibition of COX-2 using a glyceride prodrug approach reverses mesenteric lymphatic dysfunction, visceral obesity and inflammation and restores glycaemic control in mice.     Summary: Leaf dark respiration (R dark ) is an important yet poorly quantified component of the global carbon cycle. Given this, we analyzed a new global database of R dark and associated leaf traits. Data for 899 species were compiled from 100 sites (from the Arctic to the tropics). Several woody and nonwoody plant functional types (PFTs) were represented. Mixed-effects models were used to disentangle sources of variation in R dark . Area-based R dark at the prevailing average daily growth temperature (T) of each site increased only twofold from the Arctic to the tropics, despite a 20°C increase in growing T (8-28°C). By contrast, R dark at a standard T (25°C, R dark 25 ) was threefold higher in the Arctic than in the tropics, and twofold higher at arid than at mesic sites. Species and PFTs at cold sites exhibited higher R dark 25 at a given photosynthetic capacity (V cmax 25 ) or leaf nitrogen concentration ([N]) than species at warmer sites. R dark 25 values at any given V cmax 25 or [N] were higher in herbs than in woody plants. The results highlight variation in R dark among species and across global gradients in T and aridity. In addition to their ecological significance, the results provide a framework for improving representation of R dark in terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs) and associated land-surface components of Earth system models (ESMs). © 2015 New Phytologist Trust
