Scaling and singularities in the entrainment of globally-coupled oscillators
The onset of collective behavior in a population of globally coupled
oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied for phase
dynamical models with arbitrary coupling. The population is described by a
Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of phases which includes the
diffusive effect of noise in the oscillator frequencies. The bifurcation from
the phase-incoherent state is analyzed using amplitude equations for the
unstable modes with particular attention to the dependence of the nonlinearly
saturated mode on the linear growth rate . In general
we find where is the
diffusion coefficient and is the mode number of the unstable mode. The
unusual factor arises from a singularity in the cubic term of

Cystatins as calpain inhibitors: Engineered chicken cystatin- and stefin B-kininogen domain 2 hybrids support a cystatin-like mode of interaction with the catalytic subunit of μ-calpain
Within the cystatin superfamily, only kininogen domain 2 (KD2) is able to inhibit μ- and m-calpain. In an attempt to elucidate the structural requirements of cystatins for calpain inhibition, we constructed recombinant hybrids of human stefin B (an intracellular family 1 cystatin) with KD2 and Delta L110 deletion mutants of chicken cystatin-KD2 hybrids. Substitution of the N-terminal contact region of stefin B by the corresponding KD2 sequence resulted in a calpain inhibitor of K-i = 188 nM. Deletion of L110, which forms a beta -bulge in family 1 and 2 cystatins but is lacking in KD2, improved inhibition of mu -calpain 4- to 8-fold. All engineered cystatins were temporary inhibitors of calpain due to slow substrate-like cleavage of a single peptide bond corresponding to Gly9-Ala10 in chicken cystatin. Biomolecular interaction analysis revealed that, unlike calpastatin, the cystatin-type inhibitors do not bind to the calmodulin-like domain of the small subunit of calpain, and their interaction with the mu -calpain heterodimer is completely prevented by a synthetic peptide comprising subdomain B of calpastatin domain 1. Based on these results we propose that (i) cystatin-type calpain inhibitors interact with the active site of the catalytic domain of calpain in a similar cystatin-like mode as with papain and (ii) the potential for calpain inhibition is due to specific subsites within the papain-binding regions of the general cystatin fold
Understanding the tsunami with a simple model
In this paper, we use the approximation of shallow water waves (Margaritondo
G 2005 Eur. J. Phys. 26 401) to understand the behaviour of a tsunami in a
variable depth. We deduce the shallow water wave equation and the continuity
equation that must be satisfied when a wave encounters a discontinuity in the
sea depth. A short explanation about how the tsunami hit the west coast of
India is given based on the refraction phenomenon. Our procedure also includes
a simple numerical calculation suitable for undergraduate students in physics
and engineering
Human μ-calpain: Simple isolation from erythrocytes and characterization of autolysis fragments
Heterodimeric μ-calpain, consisting of the large (80 kDa) and the small (30 kDa) subunit, was isolated and purified from human erythrocytes by a highly reproducible four-step purification procedure. Obtained material is more than 95% pure and has a specific activity of 6 - 7 mU/mg. Presence of contaminating proteins could not be detected by HPLC and sequence analysis. During storage at -80 °C the enzyme remains fully activatable by Ca²⁺, although the small subunit is partially processed to a 22 kDa fragment. This novel autolysis product of the small subunit starts with the sequence (60)RILG and is further processed to the known 18 kDa fragment. Active forms and typical transient and stable autolysis products of the large subunit were identified by protein sequencing. In casein-zymograms only the activatable forms 80 kDa+30 kDa, 80 kDa+22 kDa and 80 kDa+18 kDa displayed caseinolysis
PTC Taste Threshold Distributions and Age in Mennonite Populations

Copyright 1982 Wayne State University Press.A number of studies report an impairment of the genetically inherited ability to taste PTC as a function of age, but ignore the cumulative effect of smoking on taste deterioration. This study examines the effect of aging on taste sensitivity in nonsmoking Mennonite populations. The results obtained preclude a cause and effect relationship between age and PTC taste sensitivity. These results are congruent with the claims which ascribe the observed deterioration in PTC taste sensitivity to the cumulative effects of smoking, rather than to the effects of aging per se
Reanalysis of Copernicus Measurements on Interstellar Carbon Monoxide
We used archival data acquired with the Copernicus satellite to reexamine CO
column densities because self-consistent oscillator strengths are now
available. Our focus is on lines of sight containing modest amounts of
molecular species. Our resulting column densities are small enough that
self-shielding from photodissociation is not occurring in the clouds probed by
the observations. While our sample shows that the column densities of CO and H2
are related, no correspondence with the CH column density is evident. The case
for the CH+ column density is less clear. Recent chemical models for these
sight lines suggest that CH is mainly a by-product of CH+ synthesis in low
density gas. The models are most successful in reproducing the amounts of CO in
the densest sight lines. Thus, much of the CO absorption must arise from denser

Implications of new measurements of O-16 + p + C-12,13, N-14,15 for the abundances of C, N isotopes at the cosmic ray source
The fragmentation of a 225 MeV/n O-16 beam was investigated at the Bevalac. Preliminary cross sections for mass = 13, 14, 15 fragments are used to constrain the nuclear excitation functions employed in galactic propagation calculations. Comparison to cosmic ray isotonic data at low energies shows that in the cosmic ray source C-13/C approximately 2% and N-14/0=3-6%. No source abundance of N-15 is required with the current experimental results
20 cm VLA Radio-Continuum Study of M31 - Images and Point Source Catalogues
We present a series of new high-sensitivity and high-resolution
radio-continuum images of M31 at \lambda=20 cm (\nu=1.4 GHz). These new images
were produced by merging archived 20 cm radio-continuum observations from the
Very Large Array (VLA) telescope. Images presented here are sensitive to rms=60
\mu Jy and feature high angular resolution (<10"). A complete sample of
discrete radio sources have been catalogued and analysed across 17 individual
VLA projects. We identified a total of 864 unique discrete radio sources across
the field of M31. One of the most prominent regions in M31 is the ring feature
for which we estimated total integrated flux of 706 mJy at \lambda=20 cm. We
compare here, detected sources to those listed in Gelfand et al. (2004) at
\lambda=92 cm and find 118 sources in common to both surveys. The majority
(61%) of these sources exhibit a spectral index of \alpha <-0.6 indicating that
their emission is predominantly non-thermal in nature. That is more typical for
