Universal trapping scaling on the unstable manifold for a collisionless electrostatic mode
An amplitude equation for an unstable mode in a collisionless plasma is
derived from the dynamics on the two-dimensional unstable manifold of the
equilibrium. The mode amplitude decouples from the phase due to the
spatial homogeneity of the equilibrium, and the resulting one-dimensional
dynamics is analyzed using an expansion in . As the linear growth rate
vanishes, the expansion coefficients diverge; a rescaling
of the mode amplitude absorbs these
singularities and reveals that the mode electric field exhibits trapping

Multivariate evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment efficacy of cypermethrin against sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)
Background: The sea louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis is the most important ectoparasite of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Norwegian aquaculture. Control of sea lice is primarily dependent on the use of delousing chemotherapeutants, which are both expensive and toxic to other wildlife. The method most commonly used for monitoring treatment effectiveness relies on measuring the percentage reduction in the mobile stages of Lepeophtheirus salmonis only. However, this does not account for changes in the other sea lice stages and may result in misleading or incomplete interpretation regarding the effectiveness of treatment. With the aim of improving the evaluation of delousing treatments, we explored multivariate analyses of bath treatments using the topical pyrethroid, cypermethrin, in salmon pens at five Norwegian production sites.Results: Conventional univariate analysis indicated reductions of over 90% in mobile stages at all sites. In contrast, multivariate analyses indicated differing treatment effectiveness between sites (p-value < 0.01) based on changes in the proportion and abundance of the chalimus and PAAM (pre-adult and adult males) stages. Low water temperatures and shortened intervals between sampling after treatment may account for the differences in the composition of chalimus and PAAM stage groups following treatment. Using multivariate analysis, such factors could be separated from those which were attributable to inadequate treatment or chemotherapeutant failure.Conclusions: Multivariate analyses for evaluation of treatment effectiveness against multiple life cycle stages of L. salmonis yield additional information beyond that derivable from univariate methods. This can aid in the identification of causes of apparent treatment failure in salmon aquaculture
Reducing in-stent restenosis therapeutic manipulation of miRNA in vascular remodeling and inflammation
Background:
Drug-eluting stents reduce the incidence of in-stent restenosis, but they result in delayed arterial healing and are associated with a chronic inflammatory response and hypersensitivity reactions. Identifying novel interventions to enhance wound healing and reduce the inflammatory response may improve long-term clinical outcomes. Micro–ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) are noncoding small ribonucleic acids that play a prominent role in the initiation and resolution of inflammation after vascular injury.<p></p>
Objectives:
This study sought to identify miRNA regulation and function after implantation of bare-metal and drug-eluting stents.<p></p>
Methods:
Pig, mouse, and in vitro models were used to investigate the role of miRNA in in-stent restenosis.<p></p>
Results:
We documented a subset of inflammatory miRNAs activated after stenting in pigs, including the miR-21 stem loop miRNAs. Genetic ablation of the miR-21 stem loop attenuated neointimal formation in mice post-stenting. This occurred via enhanced levels of anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages coupled with an impaired sensitivity of smooth muscle cells to respond to vascular activation.<p></p>
Conclusions:
MiR-21 plays a prominent role in promoting vascular inflammation and remodeling after stent injury. MiRNA-mediated modulation of the inflammatory response post-stenting may have therapeutic potential to accelerate wound healing and enhance the clinical efficacy of stenting

Bis(Imino)Acenaphthene (BIAN)-Supported Palladium(II) Carbene Complexes as Effective C-C Coupling Catalysts and Solvent Effects in Organic and Aqueous Media
The synthesis and catalytic properties of two new 1,2-acenaphthenyl N-heterocyclic carbene-supported palladium(II) catalysts are presented. The acenaphthenyl carbene has been prepared with mesityl or 1,5-diisopropyl N-aryl substituents. Comprehensive catalytic studies for the Suzuki coupling of aryl halides with aryl boronic acids have been conducted. In general, the diisopropyl-functionalised catalyst showed superior selectivity and reactivity. A comparison of the catalytic performances in dichloromethane, toluene and water at low temperatures (30- 40 degrees C) is also presented. Both catalysts were proficient in the homogeneous Suzuki coupling of aryl iodides, bromides and chlorides with boronic acids in dichloromethane. Similar reactions in water led to the formation of insoluble colloidal catalytic species that still exhibited high activity in the Suzuki reaction with aryl chlorides. Reactions performed in toluene showed intermediate results; partial catalyst decomposition led to concomitant homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. The heterogeneous palladium precipitates could be easily recovered by filtration and reactivated for subsequent use. Activation energies determined for aryl bromide-based Suzuki reactions were found to be in the range of 159-171 kJ mol(-1) in organic solvents and 111-116 kJ mol(-1) in water. Detection of circumstellar material in a normal Type Ia Supernova
Type Ia supernovae are thought to be thermonuclear explosions of accreting
white dwarfs that reach a critical mass limit. Despite their importance as
cosmological distance indicators, the nature of their progenitors has remained
controversial. Here we report the detection of circumstellar material in a
normal Type Ia supernova. The expansion velocities, densities and dimensions of
the circumstellar envelope indicate that this material was ejected from the
progenitor system. The relatively low expansion velocities appear to favor a
progenitor system where a white dwarf accretes material from a companion star

Modeling parasite dynamics on farmed salmon for precautionary conservation management of wild salmon
Conservation management of wild fish may include fish health management in sympatric populations of domesticated fish in aquaculture. We developed a mathematical model for the population dynamics of parasitic sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on domesticated populations of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the Broughton Archipelago region of British Columbia. The model was fit to a seven-year dataset of monthly sea louse counts on farms in the area to estimate population growth rates in relation to abiotic factors (temperature and salinity), local host density (measured as cohort surface area), and the use of a parasiticide, emamectin benzoate, on farms. We then used the model to evaluate management scenarios in relation to policy guidelines that seek to keep motile louse abundance below an average three per farmed salmon during the March-June juvenile wild Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) migration. Abiotic factors mediated the duration of effectiveness of parasiticide treatments, and results suggest treatment of farmed salmon conducted in January or early February minimized average louse abundance per farmed salmon during the juvenile wild salmon migration. Adapting the management of parasites on farmed salmon according to migrations of wild salmon may therefore provide a precautionary approach to conserving wild salmon populations in salmon farming regions
Low-lying level structure of Cu and its implications on the rp process
The low-lying energy levels of proton-rich Cu have been extracted
using in-beam -ray spectroscopy with the state-of-the-art -ray
tracking array GRETINA in conjunction with the S800 spectrograph at the
National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University.
Excited states in Cu serve as resonances in the
Ni(p,)Cu reaction, which is a part of the rp-process in
type I x-ray bursts. To resolve existing ambiguities in the reaction Q-value, a
more localized IMME mass fit is used resulting in ~keV. We derive
the first experimentally-constrained thermonuclear reaction rate for
Ni(p,)Cu. We find that, with this new rate, the
rp-process may bypass the Ni waiting point via the Ni(p,)
reaction for typical x-ray burst conditions with a branching of up to
40. We also identify additional nuclear physics uncertainties that
need to be addressed before drawing final conclusions about the rp-process
