    Scaling and singularities in the entrainment of globally-coupled oscillators

    The onset of collective behavior in a population of globally coupled oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied for phase dynamical models with arbitrary coupling. The population is described by a Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of phases which includes the diffusive effect of noise in the oscillator frequencies. The bifurcation from the phase-incoherent state is analyzed using amplitude equations for the unstable modes with particular attention to the dependence of the nonlinearly saturated mode α|\alpha_\infty| on the linear growth rate γ\gamma. In general we find αγ(γ+l2D)|\alpha_\infty|\sim \sqrt{\gamma(\gamma+l^2D)} where DD is the diffusion coefficient and ll is the mode number of the unstable mode. The unusual (γ+l2D)(\gamma+l^2D) factor arises from a singularity in the cubic term of the amplitude equation.Comment: 11 pages (Revtex); paper submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    Cystatins as calpain inhibitors: Engineered chicken cystatin- and stefin B-kininogen domain 2 hybrids support a cystatin-like mode of interaction with the catalytic subunit of μ-calpain

    Within the cystatin superfamily, only kininogen domain 2 (KD2) is able to inhibit μ- and m-calpain. In an attempt to elucidate the structural requirements of cystatins for calpain inhibition, we constructed recombinant hybrids of human stefin B (an intracellular family 1 cystatin) with KD2 and Delta L110 deletion mutants of chicken cystatin-KD2 hybrids. Substitution of the N-terminal contact region of stefin B by the corresponding KD2 sequence resulted in a calpain inhibitor of K-i = 188 nM. Deletion of L110, which forms a beta -bulge in family 1 and 2 cystatins but is lacking in KD2, improved inhibition of mu -calpain 4- to 8-fold. All engineered cystatins were temporary inhibitors of calpain due to slow substrate-like cleavage of a single peptide bond corresponding to Gly9-Ala10 in chicken cystatin. Biomolecular interaction analysis revealed that, unlike calpastatin, the cystatin-type inhibitors do not bind to the calmodulin-like domain of the small subunit of calpain, and their interaction with the mu -calpain heterodimer is completely prevented by a synthetic peptide comprising subdomain B of calpastatin domain 1. Based on these results we propose that (i) cystatin-type calpain inhibitors interact with the active site of the catalytic domain of calpain in a similar cystatin-like mode as with papain and (ii) the potential for calpain inhibition is due to specific subsites within the papain-binding regions of the general cystatin fold

    An empirical temperature calibration for the Delta a photometric system. II. The A-type and mid F-type star

    With the Delta a photometric system, it is possible to study very distant galactic and even extragalactic clusters with a high level of accuracy. This can be done with a classical color-magnitude diagram and appropriate isochrones. The new calibration presented in this paper is a powerful extension. For open clusters, the reddening is straightforward for an estimation via Isochrone fitting and is needed in order to calculate the reddening-free, temperature sensitive, index (g1-y)0. As a last step, the calibration can be applied to individual stars. Because no a-priori reddening-free photometric parameters are available for the investigated spectral range, we have applied the dereddening calibrations of the Stromgren uvbybeta system and compared them with extinction models for the Milky Way. As expected from the sample of bright stars, the extinction is negligible for almost all objects. As a next step, already established calibrations within the Stromgren uvbybeta, Geneva 7-color, and Johnson UBV systems were applied to a sample of 282 normal stars to derive a polynomial fit of the third degree for the averaged effective temperatures to the individual (g1-y)0 values with a mean of the error for the whole sample of Delta T(eff) is 134K, which is lower than the value in Paper I for hotter stars.     Full-coverage film cooling heat transfer study: Summary of data for normal-hole injection and 30 deg slant-hole injection

    Heat transfer to a full coverage film cooled turbulent boundary layer over a flat surface was studied. The surface consisted of a discrete hole test section containing 11 rows of holes spaced 5 diameters apart in a staggered array and an instrumented recovery region. Ten diameter spacing was also studied by plugging appropriate holes. Two test sections were used, one having holes normal to the surface and the other having holes angled 30 deg to the surface in the downstream direction. Stanton number data were obtained both in the full coverage region and in the downstream recovery region for a range of blowing ratios, or mass flux ratios, from 0 to 1.3. Initial conditions at the upstream edge of the blowing region were varied from 500 to 5000 for momentum thickness Reynolds number and from 100 to 1800 for enthalpy thickness Reynolds number. The range of Reynolds numbers based on hole diameter and mainstream velocity was 6000 to 22000. Initial boundary layer thicknesses range from 0.5 to 2.0 hole diameters. Air was used as the working fluid. The data were taken for the secondary injection temperature equal to the wall temperature and also equal to the mainstream temperature. Superposition was then used to obtain Stanton number as a continuous function of the injectant temperature. The heat transfer coefficient was defined on the basis of a mainstream-to-wall temperature difference. This definition permits direct comparison of performance between film cooling and transpiration cooling

    Counselor skill training involves learning to execute techniques and principles that facilitate client change. Incorporating motivational interviewing can provide a framework that emphasizes humanism in addition to preparing students to assist clients who are ambivalent about change or “resistant.” In this study, we investigated the degree of MI competency achieved by students when MI was integrated into a counseling skills course. We then examined how MI competency was maintained over time. Findings showed that students achieved competency in executing the MI spirit, and this was largely maintained following subsequent coursework and clinical experiences. Implications include the value of incorporating MI training in a counseling skills course and the need for additional training in MI to maintain gains in competency

    X-ray emission from the field of the hyperluminous IRAS galaxy IRASF15307+3252

    We report on a 20-ks observation of the z = 0.93 hyperluminous galaxy IRAS F15307+3252 with the ROSAT HRI. No X-ray source is detected at the position of F15307+3252 at an upper limit of ∼4 × 10⁴³ erg s⁻¹. This is less than 2 × 10⁻⁴ of the bolometric luminosity of the object, and indicates either that the nucleus emits an unusually small fraction of its total power in X-rays, or that little of the nuclear X-ray flux is scattered into our line of sight by electrons. The lack of an X-ray detection around F15307+3252 also rules out it being at the centre of a cluster, such as is observed for IRAS P09104+4109. A weak, possibly extended, X-ray source is detected 13 arcsec south of the galaxy, spatially coincident with a clump of faint objects visible in a Keck K_s-band image of the field. This may be the core of a cluster near the line of sight to F15307+3252
