    High resolution observations of interstellar Na I and Ca II towards the Scorpius OB1 association

    Observations of Na I and Ca II in absorption toward 22 stars in the Sco OB1 region, obtained at resolution R = 100,000 with a coude echelle spectrograph and 3.3-m camera on the 1.9-m telescope at Mt. Stromlo Observatory during 1986, are reported. The data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and analyzed in detail. Features discussed include (1) strong absorption at heliocentric velocities between 0 and -20 km/sec, (2) sharp discrete components with blueshifted velocities of up to -50 km/sec, and (3) some absorption at positive heliocentric velocities up to +20 km/sec. The (Na I)/(Ca II) ratios are found to be 4-200 for component (1), near 1 for component (2), and 0.4 or less for component (3

    Coexistence of double alternating antiferromagnetic chains in (VO)_2P_2O_7 : NMR study

    Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of 31P and 51V nuclei has been measured in a spin-1/2 alternating-chain compound (VO)_2P_2O_7. By analyzing the temperature variation of the 31P NMR spectra, we have found that (VO)_2P_2O_7 has two independent spin components with different spin-gap energies. The spin gaps are determined from the temperature dependence of the shifts at 31P and 51V sites to be 35 K and 68 K, which are in excellent agreement with those observed in the recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments [A.W. Garrett et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 745 (1997)]. This suggests that (VO)_2P_2O_7 is composed of two magnetic subsystems showing distinct magnetic excitations, which are associated with the two crystallographically-inequivalent V chains running along the b axis. The difference of the spin-gap energies between the chains is attributed to the small differences in the V-V distances, which may result in the different exchange alternation in each magnetic chain. The exchange interactions in each alternating chain are estimated and are discussed based on the empirical relation between the exchange interaction and the interatomic distance.Comment: 10 pages, 11 embedded eps figures, REVTeX, Submitted to Phys.     Ultra-high-resolution observations of interstellar Na I and Ca II toward the high-galactic latitude star HD 28497

    We present very high resolution (0.32 km s-1) spectra of interstellar Na I D1, D2, and Ca II K absorption toward HD 28497 obtained with the Ultra-High-Resolution Facility at the 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope. The star is located in projection in a highly disturbed interstellar region close to a number of identified features including the high galactic latitude molecular cloud MBM 20, the large Orion-Eridanus shell, seen in Hα and H I 21 cm maps, and a filamentary loop structure between vLSR = -12 and -4 km s-1 in the Berkeley H I 21 cm survey and visible on the IRAS 100 μm map. Toward HD 28497 we detect 13 absorption components in the Na I spectra, to a column density limit of 2 × 1010 cm-2, and 10 in Ca II K over a velocity range of ~70 km s-1. Four absorption components in the Na I spectra show s-resolved hyperfine structure with b-values from 0.31 to 0.40 km s-1 and column densities from 4.0 to 14 × 1010 cm-2. If we assume the clouds represented by these components have no internal turbulent velocities, their temperatures would range between 134 and 227 K. One of these hyperfine split (hfs) components, at vLSR = -11.1 km s-1, shows significant temporal variation in equivalent width compared to earlier (1977) observations, making this the first interstellar sight line outside the Vela supernova remnant to show a time-varying component. The feature may be associated with the filamentary loop structure seen in this region. There is poor correspondence between the Na I and Ca II profiles: we do not detect narrow Ca II profiles to the four hfs Na I components, and only three of the well-resolved components have the same Ca II and Na I radial velocities and consistent b-values. One of these components, at vLSR = -30.0 km s-1, has a low Na I/Ca II ratio and arises in a region where turbulent motions dominate—properties consistent with the hypothesis that the cloud lies close to HD 28497. In general, however, the Na I and Ca II occupy different gaseous phases in the ISM. We have compared our data with 21 cm emission profiles obtained from the recent Leiden/Dwingeloo H I survey. Based on agreement in the velocities, the Na I/Ca II ratio, and the kinetic temperatures, we conclude that the component at vLSR = -7.5 km s-1 is associated with the front side of the large, expanding Orion-Eridanus shell. Unexpectedly, the molecular cloud MBM 20 is not detected either in our absorption spectra or in the H I profiles, indicating that HD 28497 lies away from the core of MBM 20. Apart from the two features at -11 and -7.5 km s-1 there is almost no agreement between the H I profiles and the optical spectra. Although we cannot rule out the possibility that most of the H I lies behind the star, this explanation seems unlikely because many of the H I features have previously been attributed to foreground phenomena. The beam sizes of the H I and the optical studies are quite different and this suggests a different explanation, namely that the physical sizes of the interstellar structures we detect in Na I and Ca II are not extensive enough to be detected in H I. If so, this raises questions about the usefulness in general of combining results obtained from H I 21 cm studies with results obtained from optical (or ultraviolet) studies of the interstellar gas

    Near-threshold measurement of the 4He(g,n) reaction

    A near-threshold 4He(g,n) cross-section measurement has been performed at MAX-lab. Tagged photons from 23 < Eg < 42 MeV were directed toward a liquid 4He target, and neutrons were detected by time-of-flight in two liquid-scintillator arrays. Seven-point angular distributions were measured for eight photon energies. The results are compared to experimental data measured at comparable energies and Recoil-Corrected Continuum Shell Model, Resonating Group Method, and recent Hyperspherical-Harmonic Expansion calculations. The angle-integrated cross-section data is peaked at a photon energy of about 28 MeV, in disagreement with the value recommended by Calarco, Berman, and Donnelly in 1983.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, some revisions, submitted to Physics Letters

    Digital Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia in Women With Chronic Migraines

    Objective/Background: Insomnia commonly co-occurs with chronic migraines (CM). Non-pharmacological treatments for insomnia in CM patients remain understudied. This is a proof-of-concept study, which aims to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (dCBT-I) for individuals with CM and insomnia (CM-I) in the United States. Methods: We recruited 42 females with CM-I symptoms from a U.S.-based observational cohort and from the general population via advertisements. Within a multiple baseline design, participants were randomized to receive dCBT-I after 2, 4, or 6 weeks of completing baseline sleep diaries. DCBT-I was scrutinized against benchmarks for completion rates (≥90% to complete dCBT-I), acceptability (≥80% to find dCBT-I acceptable), and posttreatment changes in insomnia symptoms (≥50% indicating a clinically relevant improvement in their insomnia symptoms). As a secondary measure, we also reported percentage of individuals reverting to episodic migraines. Results: Out of 42 randomized, 35 (83.3%) completed dCBT-I within the 12 weeks provided. Of these completers, 33 (94.3%) reported being satisfied (n = 16) or very satisfied (n = 17) with treatment. Additionally, 65.7% of completers responded to treatment as per universally accepted criteria for insomnia. Lastly, 34% of completers reverted from CM to episodic migraine. Conclusion: This study provides evidence for the feasibility and acceptability of dCBT-I in patients with CM-I complaints. Effects of improving insomnia and migraines were suggested. These results indicate that a randomized controlled trial is needed to determine the efficacy of dCBT-I in CM patients

    Deformation change in light iridium nuclei from laser spectroscopy

    Laser spectroscopy measurements have been performed on neutron-deficient and stable Ir isotopes using the COMPLIS experimental setup installed at ISOLDE-CERN. The radioactive Ir atoms were obtained from successive decays of a mass-separated Hg beam deposited onto a carbon substrate after deceleration to 1kV and subsequently laser desorbed. A three-color, two-step resonant scheme was used to selectively ionize the desorbed Ir atoms. The hyperfine structure (HFS) and isotope shift (IS) of the first transition of the ionization path 5d^{7}6s ^{2}^{4}F_{9/2} \to 5d^{7}6s6p ^{6}F_{11/2} at 351.5nm were measured for 182189^{182-189}Ir, 186Irm^{186}Ir^{m} and the stable 191,193^{191,193}Ir. The nuclear magnetic moments μI and the spectroscopic quadrupole moments Qs were obtained from the HFS spectra and the change of the mean square charge radii from the IS measurements. The sign of μI was experimentally determined for the first time for the masses 182≤A≤189 and the isomeric state 186Irm^{186}Ir^ m . The spectroscopic quadrupole moments of 182^{182}Ir and 183^{183}Ir were measured also for the first time. A large mean square charge radius change between 187^{187}Ir and 186Irg^{186}Ir^g and between 186Irm^{186}Ir^m and 186Irg^{186}Ir ^g was observed corresponding to a sudden increase in deformation: from β2 ≃ + 0.16 for the heavier group A = 193, 191, 189, 187 and 186m to β2 ≥ + 0.2 for the lighter group A = 186g, 185, 184, 183 and 182. These results were analyzed in the framework of a microscopic treatment of an axial rotor plus one or two quasiparticle(s). This sudden deformation change is associated with a change in the proton state that describes the odd-nuclei ground state or that participates in the coupling with the neutron in the odd-odd nuclei. This state is identified with the π3/2+[402] orbital for the heavier group and with the π1/2-[541] orbital stemming from the 1h _9/2 spherical subshell for the lighter group. That last state seems to affect strongly the observed values of the nuclear moments
