    Learners reconceptualising education: Widening participation through creative engagement?

    This paper argues that engaging imaginatively with ways in which statutory and further education is provided and expanding the repertoire of possible transitions into higher education, is necessary for providers both in higher education and in the contexts and phases which precede study at this level. Fostering dispositions for creativity in dynamic engagement with educational technology together with the consideration of pedagogy, learning objects, inclusion, policy and the management of change, requires innovative provision to span the spaces between school, home, work and higher education learning. Reporting on The Aspire Pilot, a NESTA-funded initiative at The Open University, the paper offers the beginning of a theoretical frame for considering learning, learners and learning systems in the information age prioritizing learner agency. It will report emergent empirical findings from this inter-disciplinary project, with a significant e-dimension, which seeks to foster the creativity of 13-19 year olds in considering future learning systems, developing provocations for others to explore creative but grounded possibilities. It explores implications arising from this project for approaches that may facilitate widening participation in higher education

    Remote control of an impact demonstration vehicle

    Uplink and downlink telemetry systems were installed in a Boeing 720 aircraft that was remotely flown from Rogers Dry Lake at Edwards Air Force Base and impacted into a designated crash site on the lake bed. The controlled impact demonstration (CID) program was a joint venture by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to test passenger survivability using antimisting kerosene (AMK) to inhibit postcrash fires, improve passenger seats and restraints, and improve fire-retardent materials. The uplink telemetry system was used to remotely control the aircraft and activate onboard systems from takeoff until after impact. Aircraft systems for remote control, aircraft structural response, passenger seat and restraint systems, and anthropomorphic dummy responses were recorded and displayed by the downlink stems.     A group of common ceramic materials (alumina, magnesium oxide, silicon nitride, and silicon carbide) were characterized through literature searches according to their physical properties. The files used were the NASA file, DDC/GRA File, Engineering Index File and standard library searches. The results of these searches are arranged by material properties including mechanical, electrical, electromagnetic, where applicable, and fracture; and the entries are arranged in chronological order by candidate. A list, by author, follows where tabular information including charts and figures of results is given along with a brief statement of the results and conclusions. In both cases, information on the independent variables along with their range is given. The results of an extensive industry survey asking for names of other candidates on which information is lacking and also what type of service, if any, is desired in keeping a current information file on general ceramic materials

    Initial Development and Verification of a Precise Orbit Determination Filter for the APEX CubeSat Mission

    Current research for the Advanced Propulsion Experiment (APEX) at Missouri University of Science and Technology is focused on precise orbit and parameter determination to verify the performance of the Multi-Mode Ionic Monopropellant thruster payload. A batch filter to process dual-frequency GPS pseudoranges using the International GNSS Service precise position, clock, and phase center data products was developed. The filter estimates the dynamic states of the vehicle in conjunction with the coefficients of drag and solar radiation pressure, a constant average thrust magnitude, and the time biases of the GNSS receiver clock at each measurement epoch. Furthermore, it considers uncertainty in the vehicle attitude and mass measurement. The framework is extended to support examination of other parameters of interest. The statistical consistency of the filter is verified using a Monte Carlo analysis. The filter dynamics and measurement models are verified using AGI’s Systems Tool Kit and initial results of verification using NASA ICESat mission data are presented

    “I just want to be skinny.”: A content analysis of tweets expressing eating disorder symptoms

    There is increasing concern about online communities that promote eating disorder (ED) behaviors through messages and/or images that encourage a “thin ideal” (i.e., promotion of thinness as attractive) and harmful weight loss/weight control practices. The purpose of this paper is to assess the content of body image and ED-related content on Twitter and provide a deeper understanding of EDs that may be used for future studies and online-based interventions. Tweets containing ED or body image-related keywords were collected from January 1-January 31, 2015 (N = 28,642). A random sample (n = 3000) was assessed for expressions of behaviors that align with subscales of the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) 16.0. Demographic characteristics were inferred using a social media analytics company. The comprehensive research that we conducted indicated that 2,584 of the 3,000 tweets were ED-related; 65% expressed a preoccupation with body shape, 13% displayed issues related to food/eating/calories, and 4% expressed placing a high level of importance on body weight. Most tweets were sent by girls (90%) who were ≤19 years old (77%). Our findings stress a need to better understand if and how ED-related content on social media can be used for targeting prevention and intervention messages towards those who are in-need and could potentially benefit from these efforts.</div
