Bacterial Quality of Private Water Wells in Clark County, Arkansas

    Get PDF
Most private water wells in Clark County appeared to be contaminated by bacteria, apparently entering the wells from surface water seepage. Eighteen to 24% of the wells investigated were positive for fecal contamination. Deeper wells were less often contaminated. More than one-half of the wells sampled exceeded recommended limits of inorganic chemicals for safe potable water. High concentrations of iron and manganese were most common, exceeding recommended limits in more than 40% of the well

Parrondo-like behavior in continuous-time random walks with memory

    Get PDF
The Continuous-Time Random Walk (CTRW) formalism can be adapted to encompass stochastic processes with memory. In this article we will show how the random combination of two different unbiased CTRWs can give raise to a process with clear drift, if one of them is a CTRW with memory. If one identifies the other one as noise, the effect can be thought as a kind of stochastic resonance. The ultimate origin of this phenomenon is the same of the Parrondo's paradox in game theoryComment: 8 pages, 3 figures, revtex; enlarged and revised versio

New method for critical failure prediction of complex systems

    Get PDF
Rigorous analytical technique, called criticality determination methodology /or CD technique/ determines the probability that a given complex system will successfully achieve stated objectives. The CD technique identifies critical elements of the system by a failure mode and effects analysis

Small Energy Scale for Mixed-Valent Uranium Materials

We investigate a two-channel Anderson impurity model with a 5f15f^1 magnetic and a 5f25f^2 quadrupolar ground doublet, and a 5f25f^2 excited triplet. Using the numerical renormalization group method, we find a crossover to a non-Fermi liquid state below a temperature T∗T^* varying as the 5f25f^2 triplet-doublet splitting to the 7/2 power. To within numerical accuracy, the non-linear magnetic susceptibility and the 5f15f^1 contribution to the linear susceptibility are given by universal one-parameter scaling functions. These results may explain UBe13_{13} as mixed valent with a small crossover scale T∗T^*.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let

Universal Phase Diagram for High-Piezoelectric Perovskite Systems

Strong piezoelectricity in the perovskite-type PbZr(1-x)TixO3 (PZT) and Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PZN-PT) systems is generally associated with the existence of a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) separating regions with rhombohedral and tetragonal symmetry. An x-ray study of PZN-9%PT has revealed the presence of a new orthorhombic phase at the MPB, and a near-vertical boundary between the rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases, similar to that found for PZT between the rhombohedral and monoclinic phases. We discuss the results in the light of a recent theoretical paper by Vanderbilt and Cohen, which attributes these low-symmetry phases to the high anharmonicity in these oxide systems.Comment: REVTeX file. 4 pages,=A0 4 figures embedde

Cohomology of Line Bundles: A Computational Algorithm

We present an algorithm for computing line bundle valued cohomology classes over toric varieties. This is the basic starting point for computing massless modes in both heterotic and Type IIB/F-theory compactifications, where the manifolds of interest are complete intersections of hypersurfaces in toric varieties supporting additional vector bundles.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables; v2: typos and references corrected; v3: proof-related statements updated, cohomCalg implementation available at http://wwwth.mppmu.mpg.de/members/blumenha/cohomcalg

Mediation of Long Range Charge Transfer by Kondo Bound States

    Get PDF
We present a theory of non-equilibrium long range charge transfer between donor and acceptor centers in a model polymer mediated by magnetic exciton (Kondo) bound states. Our model produces electron tunneling lengths easily exceeding 10AËš\AA, as observed recently in DNA and organic charge transfer systems. This long ranged tunneling is effective for weak to intermediate donor-bridge coupling, and is enhanced both by weak to intermediate strength Coulomb hole-electron attraction (through the orthogonality catastrophe) and by coupling to local vibrational modes.Comment: Revised content (broadened scope, vibrations added), submitted to Phys Rev Lett, added autho
