Photoacoustic Tomography in a Rectangular Reflecting Cavity
Almost all known image reconstruction algorithms for photoacoustic and
thermoacoustic tomography assume that the acoustic waves leave the region of
interest after a finite time. This assumption is reasonable if the reflections
from the detectors and surrounding surfaces can be neglected or filtered out
(for example, by time-gating). However, when the object is surrounded by
acoustically hard detector arrays, and/or by additional acoustic mirrors, the
acoustic waves will undergo multiple reflections. (In the absence of absorption
they would bounce around in such a reverberant cavity forever). This disallows
the use of the existing free-space reconstruction techniques. This paper
proposes a fast iterative reconstruction algorithm for measurements made at the
walls of a rectangular reverberant cavity. We prove the convergence of the
iterations under a certain sufficient condition, and demonstrate the
effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithm in numerical simulations.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure
A laboratory investigation of the variability of cloud reflected radiance fields
A method to determine the radiative properties of complex cloud fields was developed. A Cloud field optical simulator (CFOS) was constructed to simulate the interaction of cloud fields with visible radiation. The CFOS was verified by comparing experimental results from it with calculations performed with a Monte Carlo radiative transfer model. A software library was developed to process, reduce, and display CFOS data. The CFSOS was utilized to study the reflected radiane patterns from simulated cloud fields
Ground vibration test results for Drones for Aerodynamic and Structural Testing (DAST)/Aeroelastic Research Wing (ARW-1R) aircraft
The drones for aerodynamic and structural testing (DAST) project was designed to control flutter actively at high subsonic speeds. Accurate knowledge of the structural model was critical for the successful design of the control system. A ground vibration test was conducted on the DAST vehicle to determine the structural model characteristics. This report presents and discusses the vibration and test equipment, the test setup and procedures, and the antisymmetric and symmetric mode shape results. The modal characteristics were subsequently used to update the structural model employed in the control law design process
An investigation of the plastic fracture of high strength steels
Three generally recognized stages of plastic fracture in high strength steels are considered in detail. These stages consist of void initiation, void growth, and void coalescence. A brief review of the existing literature on plastic fracture is included along with an outline of the experimental approach used in the investigation
The Spaceborne Global Climate Observing Center (SGCOC): Executive summary
Conceptual planning of the Spaceborne portion of the Global Climate Observing Systems (SGCOS) is reviewed. Fundamentals of the SGCOS are summarized
Numerical simulations of the kappa-mechanism with convection
A strong coupling between convection and pulsations is known to play a major
role in the disappearance of unstable modes close to the red edge of the
classical Cepheid instability strip. As mean-field models of time-dependent
convection rely on weakly-constrained parameters, we tackle this problem by the
means of 2-D Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of kappa-mechanism with
convection.
Using a linear stability analysis, we first determine the physical conditions
favourable to the kappa-mechanism to occur inside a purely-radiative layer.
Both the instability strips and the nonlinear saturation of unstable modes are
then confirmed by the corresponding DNS. We next present the new simulations
with convection, where a convective zone and the driving region overlap. The
coupling between the convective motions and acoustic modes is then addressed by
using projections onto an acoustic subspace.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysics and

Consistency of the Shannon entropy in quantum experiments
The consistency of the Shannon entropy, when applied to outcomes of quantum
experiments, is analysed. It is shown that the Shannon entropy is fully
consistent and its properties are never violated in quantum settings, but
attention must be paid to logical and experimental contexts. This last remark
is shown to apply regardless of the quantum or classical nature of the
experiments.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX2e/REVTeX4. V5: slightly different than the published
