    The Role of Repetitive Negative Thoughts in the Vulnerability for Emotional Problems in Non-Clinical Children

    The current study examined the role of repetitive negative thoughts in the vulnerability for emotional problems in non-clinical children aged 8–13 years (N = 158). Children completed self-report questionnaires for assessing (1) neuroticism and behavioral inhibition as indicators of general vulnerability (2) worry and rumination which are two important manifestations of repetitive negative thoughts, and (3) emotional problems (i.e., anxiety, depression, and sleep difficulties). Results demonstrated that there were positive correlations between measures of general vulnerability, repetitive negative thoughts, and emotional problems. Further, support was found for a model in which worry and rumination acted as partial mediators in the relation between neuroticism and symptoms of anxiety and depression. In the case of sleep difficulties, no evidence was obtained for such a mediation model. In fact, data suggested that sleeping difficulties are better conceived as an epiphenomenon of high symptom levels of anxiety and depression or as a risk factor for the development of other types of psychopathology. Finally, besides neuroticism, the temperamental trait of behavioral inhibition appeared to play a unique direct role in the model predicting anxiety symptoms but not in the models predicting depressive symptoms or sleep difficulties. To conclude, the current findings seem to indicate that worry and rumination contribute to children’s vulnerability for anxiety and depression

    The direction of effects between perceived parental behavioral control and psychological control and adolescents’ self-reported GAD and SAD symptoms

    This study examined the direction of effects and age and sex differences between adolescents’ perceptions of parental behavioral and psychological control and adolescents’ self-reports of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and separation anxiety disorder (SAD) symptoms. The study focused on 1,313 Dutch adolescents (early-to-middle cohort n = 923, 70.3%; middle-to-late cohort n = 390, 29.7%) from the general population. A multi-group, structural equation model was employed to analyze the direction of the effects between behavioral control, psychological control and GAD and SAD symptoms for the adolescent cohorts. The current study demonstrated that a unidirectional child effect model of the adolescents’ GAD and SAD symptoms predicting parental control best described the data. Additionally, adolescent GAD and SAD symptoms were stronger and more systematically related to psychological control than to behavioral control. With regard to age–sex differences, anxiety symptoms almost systematically predicted parental control over time for the early adolescent boys, whereas no significant differences were found between the late adolescent boys and girls

    Invasion of non-indigenous species (NIS) is acknowledged as one of the most important external drivers affecting structure and functions of marine ecosystems globally. This paper offers literature-based analysis on the effects of the widespread (occurring in at least 50% of countries) and currently established NIS on ecosystem features in the Baltic Sea. It appears that out of the 18 NIS taxa studied, there are no published records on 28% of NIS for any of the seven impact categories investigated. When ecological impacts are known, laboratory experimental evidence dominates over field studies. Combined observations on impact strength, information type and confidence level suggest that the two benthic invertebrates, the polychaete Marenzelleria spp. and the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas 1771) exert the highest ecosystem impact. Despite continuously accumulating information on the NIS effects, however, the confidence of findings is still low. Thus, we still understand very little on both the direction and magnitude of the effects of even the most widespread NIS on the structure and dynamics of the Baltic Sea ecosystems. In order to increase reliability of such assessments, future research should be targeted towards spatially-explicit field surveys and experimenting of multitrophic systems, together with modelling of ecosystem impact

    Metalothionein - imunohistochemický biomarker rakoviny: Meta-analýza

    Metallothionein (MT) has been extensively investigated as a molecular marker of various types of cancer. In spite of the fact that numerous reviews have been published in this field, no meta-analytical approach has been performed. Therefore, results of to-date immunohistochemistry-based studies were summarized using meta-analysis in this review. Web of science, PubMed, Embase and CENTRAL databases were searched (up to April 30, 2013) and the eligibility of individual studies and heterogeneity among the studies was assessed. Random and fixed effects model meta-analysis was employed depending on the heterogeneity, and publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots and Eggers tests. A total of 77 studies were included with 8,015 tissue samples (4,631 cases and 3,384 controls). A significantly positive association between MT staining and tumors (vs. healthy tissues) was observed in head and neck (odds ratio, OR 9.95; 95% CI 5.82– 17.03) and ovarian tumors (OR 7.83; 1.09–56.29), and a negative association was ascertained in liver tumors (OR 0.10; 0.03–0.30). No significant associations were identified in breast, colorectal, prostate, thyroid, stomach, bladder, kidney, gallbladder, and uterine cancers and in melanoma. . However, a high degree of inconsistence was observed in several tumor types, including colorectal, kidney and prostate cancer. Despite the ambiguity in some tumor types, conclusive results are provided in the tumors of head and neck, ovary and liver and in relation to the tumor grade and patient survival.Metalothionein (MT) byl rozsáhle zkoumán jako molekulární marker různých typů rakoviny. Navzdory tomu, že v této oblasti byly zveřejněny četné hodnocení , byl proveden meta-analytický postup. Proto výsledky na aktuální studie imunohistochemické bázi byly shrnuty pomocí meta-analýzy v této recenzi. Web of Science, PubMed, Embase a centrálních databází byly vyhledávány (až do 30.dubna 2013) a způsobilosti jednotlivých studií a heterogenity mezi studiích byla hodnocena. Náhodné a fixní efekty modelu meta-analýza byla použita v závislosti na různorodosti, a publikace zaujatost byla hodnocena pomocí trychtýř pozemky a testy Eggers.Celkem 77 studií bylo zahrnuto s 8015 vzorky tkání (4631 případů a 3384 kontrol).Významně pozitivní asociace mezi MT barvení a nádorů (vs. zdravých tkání) byl pozorován v oblasti hlavy a krku (poměr šancí, OR 9,95; 95% CI 5.82- 17,03) a ovariální nádory (OR 7,83, 1,09 - 56,29), a negativní asociace byla zjištěna v jaterních nádorů (OR 0,10; 0,03 - 0,30). Žádné významné asociace byly identifikovány v prsu, tlustého střeva, prostaty, štítné žlázy, žaludku, močového měchýře, ledvin, žlučníku, a rakoviny dělohy a melanomu. , Nicméně, vysoký stupeň nesouladu byl pozorován u několika typů nádorů, včetně tlustého střeva, ledvin a prostaty. Navzdory nejednoznačnosti některých typů nádorů, průkazné výsledky jsou uvedeny v nádorů hlavy a krku, vaječníků a jater a ve vztahu ke stupni nádoru a přežití pacienta
