Tropical Cyclones Losses by Economic Sector in Costa Rica, Central America

Tropical cyclones normally affect Central America and Costa Rica. Population growth and inefficient land use planning increases the exposure to natural hazards related to tropical cyclones such as landslides and floods. The Ministry of National Planning and Economic Policy of Costa Rica gathered all the economic impacts by municipality in every economic sector since Hurricane Joan in 1988. Our results indicate that road infrastructure, agriculture, sewerage, and housing were the most affected economic sectors in the last three decades in the country. Normally, the Pacific basin municipalities are the most affected units due to the indirect impact of tropical cyclones in Costa Rica. These results unravel the most affected municipalities and economic sectors by tropical cyclones in the country and is a useful approach that can be applied to other countries and regions affected by these phenomena throughout the tropics.Universidad de Costa Rica/[805-B9-454]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[805-C0-610]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[805-A4-906]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[805-B0-810]/UCR/Costa RicaUCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias Básicas::Centro de Investigaciones Geofísicas (CIGEFI)UCR::Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Ciencias Sociales::Facultad de Ciencias Sociales::Escuela de Geografí

Settled by Spain in 1522, Costa Rica remained under Spanish control for three centuries before declaring its independence from Spain along with other Central American provinces in 1821. The Central American Federation, created by the newly independent provinces, was soon interrupted by border disputes. Costa Rica formally withdrew from the Federation in 1838, declaring its sovereignty. In 1899, the country became a democracy, holding what were considered to be its first truly free elections. This peaceful democracy was only disrupted twice, being controlled by a dictator from 1917 to 1919 and experiencing an uprising in 1948 due to a disputed presidential election. While this civil war lasted only several weeks, it was the bloodiest in recent Costa Rican history, leaving over 2,000 dead. Since drafting its new constitution in 1953, the country has held 13 democratic elections, most recently in 2002

Recent reports of 12 confirmed cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Costa Rica have generated interest in the extent of spread of human T-lymphotropic virus type III/LAV (HTLV-III) in Latin America (1). To date, all cases of AIDS in Costa Rica have occurred in members of previously identified, high-risk groups, chiefly hemophiliacs. To examine the possibility of heterosexual transmission in Costa Rica, we utilized sera collected in a population-based case-control study of cervical cancer, conducted by the Costa Rican Demographic Association and other institution

Seagrass epiphytes play an important role in seagrass habitats; however, available information from Central America is scarce. The present study focuses on macroalgal epiphytes on leaves of the seagrass Thalassia testudinum in the seagrass meadows at Punta Cahuita, Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, and it is the first one of its kind in Costa Rica. A representative amount for each algal epiphyte species found was collected, preserved and identified to the lowest possible taxon. Preserved samples of each species were deposited in the Herbarium of the Universidad de Costa Rica. A total of 26 species of macroalgae were found: 15 species belonging to Rhodophyta, four to Chlorophyta, six to the class Phaeophyceae, and one diatom species which could not be identified. The present inventory reports three species that are new for the phycological flora of Costa Rica, four species are reported for the first time for the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, and 17 are new reports for the Parque Nacional Cahuita area. Epiphyte species number might further rise if sampling efforts and the study area increased. Rev. Biol. Trop. 56 (Suppl. 4): 163-174.
