Following Almeida, Campello and Weisbach (2003), we use the link between financial constraints and firm’s demand for liquidity to test the effect of financial constraints on firm policies in Brazil. The effect of financial constraints can be captured by a firm’s propensity to save cash out in addition of cash inflows. While constrained firms should have a positive cash flow sensitivity of cash, unconstrained firms’ cash savings should not be systematically related to cash flows. Using 2SLS method to deal with endogeneity problems, we estimate the cash flow sensitivity of cash using a large sample of Brazilian manufacturing firms over the 1995-2007 period and, using the access to international financial markets trough ADRs as a criterion for financial constraint, we find that firms that are more likely to be financially constrained display a significantly positive cash flow sensitivity of cash, while unconstrained firms do not.

The development of LBG-based nanoparticles intending an application in oral immunization is presented. Nanoparticle production occurred by mild polyelectrolyte complexation, requiring the chemical modification of LBG. Three LBG derivatives were synthesized, namely a positively charged ammonium derivative (LBGA) and negatively charged sulfate (LBGS) and carboxylate (LBGC) derivatives. These were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and x-ray diffraction. As a pharmaceutical application was aimed, a toxicological analysis of the derivatives was performed by both MTT test and LDH release assay. Several nanoparticle formulations were produced using LBGA or chitosan (CS) as positively charged polymers, and LBGC or LBGS as negatively charged counterparts, producing nanoparticles with adequate properties regarding an application in oral immunization.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Hexosamine Biosynthetic Pathway and Glycosylation Regulate Cell Migration in Melanoma Cells

    Get PDF
The Hexosamine Biosynthetic Pathway (HBP) is a branch of glycolysis responsible for the production of a key substrate for protein glycosylation, UDP-GlcNAc. Cancer cells present altered glucose metabolism and aberrant glycosylation, pointing to alterations on HBP. Recently it was demonstrated that HBP influences many aspects of tumor biology, including the development of metastasis. In this work we characterize HBP in melanoma cells and analyze its importance to cellular processes related to the metastatic phenotype. We demonstrate that an increase in HBP flux, as well as increased O-GlcNAcylation, leads to decreased cell motility and migration in melanoma cells. In addition, inhibition of N- and O-glycosylation glycosylation reduces cell migration. High HBP flux and inhibition of N-glycosylation decrease the activity of metalloproteases 2 and 9. Our data demonstrates that modulation of HBP and different types of glycosylation impact cell migration

The great geological diversity in Amazonas region generates a variety of soils. Among the various vegetation types in the Amazon, we have in the Southern region, toposequences of natural fields and forests, which includes since grasslands with alternated small trees, to isolated forest galleries along streams. The aim of this study was to use scaled semivariograms in spatial dependence of soil attributes in areas of natural fields and forest in Humaitá, AM region. Sampling networks were established with 64 points, with dimensions of 70 x 70 m and regular spacing of 10 m. The soil was sampled at depths of 0 – 0.05; 0.05 – 0.10 and 0.10 – 0.20 m for the following determinations: macroporosity, microporosity, total porosity, soil moisture, soil resistance penetration (SRP), bulk density, organic carbon, storage carbon and soil organic matter. All variables showed a strong spatial dependence structure in both areas and layers, reaching upper ranges than those established in the mesh. Bulk density (BD) and soil resistance penetration (SRP) in natural field area, can yet cause agricultural problems

Physical and chemical properties of soils in different physiographic environments in the southern Amazonas region

The Amazon region has a great diversity of landscapes such as forests galleries, natural fields (“Cerrados Amazônicos”), dense forest, these environments made possible the formation of a broad class of soils over time. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of soils in different physiographic environments in southern Amazonas, Brazil. Three areas of representative physiographies were selected, all of them in natural conditions: natural field / forest and floodplain / dry land transitions, and corrugated relief areas. Soil samples were collected in layers of 0.0 to 0.20 and 0.80-1.0 m. From the samples collected the following physical analyzes were performed: particle size, bulk density, particle density, total porosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity; and chemical: exchangeable calcium, magnesium, aluminum and potassium available, phosphorus, potential acidity, pH and organic carbon. Based on the results of chemical analysis were calculated the sum of bases and base saturation. The results were submitted to multivariate statistics analysis, at the discretion of the principal component analysis (PCA). From the results it is clear that different physiographic environments studied influence the formation of different soil classes, featuring the diversity of Amazonian soils. The PCA allowed the distinction and formation of different similarity groups, thus enabling to relate the physical and chemical properties with the physiographic formation in which they are inserted

MAMMALS IN PORTUGAL: A data set of terrestrial, volant, and marine mammal occurrences in Portugal

Mammals are threatened worldwide, with ~26% of all species being included in the IUCN threatened categories. This overall pattern is primarily associated with habitat loss or degradation, and human persecution for terrestrial mammals, and pollution, open net fishing, climate change, and prey depletion for marine mammals. Mammals play a key role in maintaining ecosystems functionality and resilience, and therefore information on their distribution is crucial to delineate and support conservation actions. MAMMALS IN PORTUGAL is a publicly available data set compiling unpublished georeferenced occurrence records of 92 terrestrial, volant, and marine mammals in mainland Portugal and archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira that includes 105,026 data entries between 1873 and 2021 (72% of the data occurring in 2000 and 2021). The methods used to collect the data were: live observations/captures (43%), sign surveys (35%), camera trapping (16%), bioacoustics surveys (4%) and radiotracking, and inquiries that represent less than 1% of the records. The data set includes 13 types of records: (1) burrows | soil mounds | tunnel, (2) capture, (3) colony, (4) dead animal | hair | skulls | jaws, (5) genetic confirmation, (6) inquiries, (7) observation of live animal (8), observation in shelters, (9) photo trapping | video, (10) predators diet | pellets | pine cones/nuts, (11) scat | track | ditch, (12) telemetry and (13) vocalization | echolocation. The spatial uncertainty of most records ranges between 0 and 100 m (76%). Rodentia (n =31,573) has the highest number of records followed by Chiroptera (n = 18,857), Carnivora (n = 18,594), Lagomorpha (n = 17,496), Cetartiodactyla (n = 11,568) and Eulipotyphla (n = 7008). The data set includes records of species classified by the IUCN as threatened (e.g., Oryctolagus cuniculus [n = 12,159], Monachus monachus [n = 1,512], and Lynx pardinus [n = 197]). We believe that this data set may stimulate the publication of other European countries data sets that would certainly contribute to ecology and conservation-related research, and therefore assisting on the development of more accurate and tailored conservation management strategies for each species.
