Screening in Anyon Gas
Anyon gas with interparticle (retarded) Coulomb interaction has been studied.
The resulting system is shown to be a collection of dressed anyons, with a
screening factor introduced in their spin. Close structural similarity with the
Chern-Simons construction of anyons has helped considerably in computing the
screening effect. Finally the present model is compared with the conventional

Espécies de Frankliniella (Thysanoptera, Thripidae): novos registros em mangueira (Mangifera indica) no Brasil.
O objetivo do trabalho foi conhecer as espécies de tripes (Thysanoptera) que atacam pomares de mangueira no semiárido pernambucano. Foram realizadas coletas no período de um ano, em três plantios comerciais da cv. ?Tommy Atkins?. Avaliações semanais foram realizadas em 75 plantas, nos estádios vegetativo e reprodutivo, perfazendo um total de 10.704 amostras em folhas e 390 em panículas. Os espécimes coletados foram levados ao laboratório da Embrapa Semiárido, Petrolina, PE, para triagem dos adultos em microscópio estereoscópico e, posteriormente, enviados à Universidade Federal de Lavras, MG, para identificação. As espécies Frankliniella gardeniae Moulton e Frankliniella Brevicaulis Hood, pertencentes à família Thripidae, representaram, respectivamente, 77% e 23% do total dos tripes coletados. Este estudo relata a primeira ocorrência dessas duas espécies em associação à cultura da mangueira, no Brasil
Studies in homosexual patients with and without lymphadenopathy - Relationships to the acquired immune deficiency syndrome
We studied the immunologic function of 19 sexually active homosexual men, ten of whom had persistent lymphadenopathy. Analysis of mononuclear cell populations distinguished homosexuals from heterosexual controls since, as a group, homosexuals had increased percentages of natural killer cells (Leu 7+), decreased helper-inducer T lymphocytes (OKT-4+), increased suppressor/cytotoxic (OKT-8+) T lymphocytes, low OKT-4:OKT-8 ratios, and depressed mitogenic responses. Homosexuals without lymphadenopathy were distinguishable from controls by increased percentages of la+ cells, decreased OKT-4+ cells, and decreased OKT-4:OKT-8 ratios. Four had positive findings simultaneously for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and surface antibody, and five had positive findings for HBsAg alone. Homosexuals with lymphadenopathy were distinguishable from controls by increased percentages of Leu 7+ cells, increased total lymphocyte numbers per cubic millimeter, decreased percentages of both OKT-4+ and OKT-8+ cells, abnormal OKT-4:OKT-8 ratios, and depressed mitogenic responses. Only histories of larger numbers of sexually acquired diseases, higher numbers of OKT-8+ cells per cubic millimeter, and lower mitogenic responses in homosexuals with lymphadenopathy distinguished this group from homosexuals without lymphadenopathy. Furthermore, none of the nine patients tested in this group was HBsAg positive. We conclude that homosexuals without lymphadenopathy are distinguishable from those with lymphadenopathy by both immunologic and serologic abnormalities
Kaposi's sarcoma with a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Its association in a male homosexual with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III infection
Combined tumor syndromes, specifically reticuloendothelial malignancies and Kaposi’s sarcoma, have long been recognized. With the recognition of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), several patients with concurrent non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Kaposi’s sarcoma have been reported at high risk for developing AIDS. The present Centers for Disease Control definition of AIDS excludes these patients on the assumption that one tumor is affecting the cellular immunity, allowing for the development of the second malignancy. In evaluating such a patient who had serologic evidence of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III infection, the probable cause of AIDS, we have reviewed reports of patients with similar concurrent malignancies before and since the onset of the AIDS epidemic. We conclude that patients in high-risk groups for AIDS who develop similar combined tumor syndromes should be classified as having AIDS
Decoherence times of universal two-qubit gates in the presence of broad-band noise
The controlled generation of entangled states of two quantum bits is a
fundamental step toward the implementation of a quantum information processor.
In nano-devices this operation is counteracted by the solid-state environment,
characterized by a broadband and non-monotonic power spectrum, often 1/f at low
frequencies. For single-qubit gates, incoherent processes due to fluctuations
acting on different time scales result in peculiar short- and long-time
behavior. Markovian noise gives rise to exponential decay with relaxation and
decoherence times, T1 and T2, simply related to the symmetry of the
qubit-environment coupling Hamiltonian. Noise with the 1/f power spectrum at
low frequencies is instead responsible for defocusing processes and algebraic
short-time behavior. In this paper, we identify the relevant decoherence times
of an entangling operation due to the different decoherence channels
originating from solid-state noise. Entanglement is quantified by concurrence,
which we evaluate in an analytic form employing a multi-stage approach. The
'optimal' operating conditions of reduced sensitivity to noise sources are
identified. We apply this analysis to a superconducting \sqrt{i-SWAP} gate for

Probing Single-Electron Spin Decoherence in Quantum Dots using Charged Excitons
We propose to use optical detection of magnetic resonance (ODMR) to measure
the decoherence time T_{2} of a single electron spin in a semiconductor quantum
dot. The electron is in one of the spin 1/2 states and a circularly polarized
laser can only create an optical excitation for one of the electron spin states
due to Pauli blocking. An applied electron spin resonance (ESR) field leads to
Rabi spin flips and thus to a modulation of the photoluminescence or,
alternatively, of the photocurrent. This allows one to measure the ESR
linewidth and the coherent Rabi oscillations, from which the electron spin
decoherence can be determined. We study different possible schemes for such an

Millisecond-range electron spin memory in singly-charged InP quantum dots
We report millisecond-range spin memory of resident electrons in an ensemble
of InP quantum dots (QDs) under a small magnetic field of 0.1 T applied along
the optical excitation axis at temperatures up to about 5 K. A pump-probe
photoluminescence (PL) technique is used for optical orientation of electron
spins by the pump pulses and for study of spin relaxation over the long time
scale by measuring the degree of circular polarization of the probe PL as a
function of pump-probe delay. Dependence of spin decay rate on magnetic field
and temperature suggests two-phonon processes as the dominant spin relaxation

Cardiac Afferent Denervation Abolishes Ganglionated Plexi and Sympathetic Responses to Apnea: Implications for Atrial Fibrillation
Background: The autonomic nervous system response to apnea and its mechanistic connection to atrial fibrillation (AF) are unclear. We hypothesize that sensory neurons within the ganglionated plexi (GP) play a role. We aimed to delineate the autonomic response to apnea and to test the effects of ablation of cardiac sensory neurons with resiniferatoxin (RTX), a neurotoxic TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid 1) agonist. Methods Sixteen dogs were anesthetized and ventilated. Apnea was induced by stopping ventilation until oxygen saturations decreased to 80%. Nerve recordings from bilateral vagal nerves, left stellate ganglion, and anterior right GP were obtained before and during apnea, before and after RTX injection in the anterior right GP (protocol 1, n=7). Atrial effective refractory period and AF inducibility on single extrastimulation were assessed before and during apnea, and before and after intrapericardial RTX administration (protocol 2, n=9). GPs underwent immunohistochemical staining for TRPV1. Results Apnea increased anterior right GP activity, followed by clustered crescendo vagal bursts synchronized with heart rate and blood pressure oscillations. On further oxygen desaturation, a tonic increase in stellate ganglion activity and blood pressure ensued. Apnea-induced effective refractory period shortening from 110.20+/-31.3 ms to 90.6+/-29.1 ms ( P<0.001), and AF induction in 9/9 dogs versus 0/9 at baseline. After RTX administration, increases in GP and stellate ganglion activity and blood pressure during apnea were abolished, effective refractory period increased to 126.7+/-26.9 ms ( P=0.0001), and AF was not induced. Vagal bursts remained unchanged. GP cells showed cytoplasmic microvacuolization and apoptosis. Conclusions Apnea increases GP activity, followed by vagal bursts and tonic stellate ganglion firing. RTX decreases sympathetic and GP nerve activity, abolishes apnea's electrophysiological response, and AF inducibility. Sensory neurons play a role in apnea-induced AF

Emergency First Responders' Experience with Colorimetric Detection Methods
Nationwide, first responders from state and federal support teams respond to hazardous materials incidents, industrial chemical spills, and potential weapons of mass destruction (WMD) attacks. Although first responders have sophisticated chemical, biological, radiological, and explosive detectors available for assessment of the incident scene, simple colorimetric detectors have a role in response actions. The large number of colorimetric chemical detection methods available on the market can make the selection of the proper methods difficult. Although each detector has unique aspects to provide qualitative or quantitative data about the unknown chemicals present, not all detectors provide consistent, accurate, and reliable results. Included here, in a consumer-report-style format, we provide “boots on the ground” information directly from first responders about how well colorimetric chemical detection methods meet their needs in the field and how they procure these methods
Multi-step time series prediction intervals using neuroevolution
Multi-step time series forecasting (TSF) is a crucial element to support tactical decisions (e.g., designing production or marketing plans several months in advance). While most TSF research addresses only single-point prediction, prediction intervals (PIs) are useful to reduce uncertainty related to important decision making variables. In this paper, we explore a large set of neural network methods for multi-step TSF and that directly optimize PIs. This includes multi-step adaptations of recently proposed PI methods, such as lower--upper bound estimation (LUBET), its ensemble extension (LUBEXT), a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm LUBE (MLUBET) and a two-phase learning multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (M2LUBET). We also explore two new ensemble variants for the evolutionary approaches based on two PI coverage--width split methods (radial slices and clustering), leading to the MLUBEXT, M2LUBEXT, MLUBEXT2 and M2LUBEXT2 methods. A robust comparison was held by considering the rolling window procedure, nine time series from several real-world domains and with different characteristics, two PI quality measures (coverage error and width) and the Wilcoxon statistic. Overall, the best results were achieved by the M2LUBET neuroevolution method, which requires a reasonable computational effort for time series with a few hundreds of observations.This article is a result of the project NORTE-01-
