    A Unique Relationship Determining Strength of Silty/Clayey Soils - Portland Cement Mixes

    This technical note advances the understanding of the key parameters controlling unconfined compressive strength (qu) of artificially cemented silty/clayey soils by considering distinct moisture contents, distinct specimen porosities (η), different Portland cement contents and any curing time periods. The qu values of the specimens moulded for each curing period were normalized (i.e. divided) by the qu attained by a specimen with a specific porosity/cement ratio. A unique relationship was found, establishing the relationship between strength for artificially cemented silty/clayey soils considering all porosities, Portland cement amounts, moisture contents and curing periods studied. From a practical viewpoint, this means that, at limit, carrying out only one unconfined compression test with a silty/clayey soil specimen, moulded with a specific Portland cement amount, a specific porosity and moisture content and cured for a given time period, allows the determination of a general relationship equation that controls the strength for an entire range of porosities and cement contents, reducing considerably the amount of moulded specimens and reducing projects development cost and time

    Bioinformatic and statistical analysis of the optic nerve head in a primate model of ocular hypertension

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The nonhuman primate model of glaucomatous optic neuropathy most faithfully reproduces the human disease. We used high-density oligonucleotide arrays to investigate whole genome transcriptional changes occurring at the optic nerve head during primate experimental glaucoma.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Laser scarification of the trabecular meshwork of cynomolgus macaques produced elevated intraocular pressure that was monitored over time and led to varying degrees of damage in different samples. The macaques were examined clinically before enucleation and the myelinated optic nerves were processed post-mortem to determine the degree of neuronal loss. Global gene expression was examined in dissected optic nerve heads with Affymetrix GeneChip microarrays. We validated a subset of differentially expressed genes using qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and immuno-enriched astrocytes from healthy and glaucomatous human donors. These genes have previously defined roles in axonal outgrowth, immune response, cell motility, neuroprotection, and extracellular matrix remodeling.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings show that glaucoma is associated with increased expression of genes that mediate axonal outgrowth, immune response, cell motility, neuroprotection, and ECM remodeling. These studies also reveal that, as glaucoma progresses, retinal ganglion cell axons may make a regenerative attempt to restore lost nerve cell contact.</p

    Sleep disorders in adult-onset myotonic dystrophy type 1: a controlled polysomnographic study

    Background:  Sleep disturbances and excessive daytime somnolence are common and disabling features in adult-onset myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Methods:  Our study used questionnaires, ambulatory polysomnography and the multiple sleep latency test to evaluate sleep-wake cycle and daytime sleepiness in unselected adult-onset DM1 patients. We recruited 18 patients affected by adult-onset DM1 and 18 matched controls. Results:  Sleep efficiency was <90% in 16/18 patients, and it was significantly reduced when compared with controls. Reduced sleep efficiency was associated with abnormal respiratory events (5/18 patients) and/or periodic limb movements (11/18 patients). The Periodic Limb Movement Index was significantly increased in DM1 versus controls. A significantly lower mean MSLT sleep latency was detected in DM1 versus controls, but it did not reach pathological levels. Conclusions:  Our controlled study demonstrated sleep alterations in unselected consecutive DM1 patients. Periodic limb movements in sleep are commonly associated with sleep disturbance in adult-onset DM1, and it may represent a marker of CNS neurodegenerative processes in DM1
