    Low Temperature AC Conductivity in BSCCO (2212)

    We report measurements of anamolously large dissipative conductivities in BiSrCaCuO(2212) at low temperatures. We have measured the complex conductivity of BSCCO thin films at 100-600 GHz as a function of doping from the underdoped to the overdoped state. At low temperatures there exists a residual dissipative conductivity which scales with the T=0 superfluid density as the doping is varied. This residual dissipative conductivity is larger than the possible contribution from a thermal population of quasiparticles at the d-wave gap nodes.Comment: Submitted to the Proceedings of the 22nd International Low Temperature Physics Conference.     A Comparative Study of American and French Fashion Conspicuous Consumption Habits on Instagram

    As social media has become an integral part of every day communications, consumers have begun to conspicuously consume through the Internet. One social media platform, Instagram, puts a central focus on media sharing and allows its users to post photos and videos to their profiles. This makes Instagram an ideal place for Internet users to put their belongings on display. However, a user’s nationality and cultural upbringing could influence how one utilizes this platform to conspicuously consume. To determine if this were true, Instagram photos from American and French users were analyzed to find any potential discrepancies. Fashion items were the focus of the study. As photos were collected, it was noted if the user was American, French, or neither, if the user was male or female, and if a fashion item was present in the post. If present, it was decided if the item was being worn, if a fashion brand was tagged in the photo, if a brand name or logo was visible, if a brand related hashtag was used, if a fashion brand was mentioned in the photo caption, and if the aesthetic of the outfit was street style or more luxurious. It was revealed that both American and French Instagram users vary little from one another in terms of how they conspicuously consume using the platform. Despite major cultural differences, these two nationalities are shown to be more similar than not. Also, the two countries have very similar habits to that of other nations around the world. The results make it apparent that Americans and the French have similar habits, but are unable to determine the exact personal, social, or cultural motives behind how these Instagram users conspicuously consume. While these users may not differ in how they act, the reason behind the action may differ immensely. Further research should be completed to discover this information

    Models for Enhanced Absorption in Inhomogeneous Superconductors

    We discuss the low-frequency absorption arising from quenched inhomogeneity in the superfluid density rho_s of a model superconductor. Such inhomogeneities may arise in a high-T_c superconductor from a wide variety of sources, including quenched random disorder and static charge density waves such as stripes. Using standard classical methods for treating randomly inhomogeneous media, we show that both mechanisms produce additional absorption at finite frequencies. For a two-fluid model with weak mean-square fluctuations <(d rho_s)^2 > in rho_s and a frequency-independent quasiparticle conductivity, the extra absorption has oscillator strength proportional to the quantity <(d rho_s)^2>/rho_s, as observed in some experiments. Similar behavior is found in a two-fluid model with anticorrelated fluctuations in the superfluid and normal fluid densities. The extra absorption typically occurs as a Lorentzian centered at zero frequency. We present simple model calculations for this extra absorption under conditions of both weak and strong fluctuations. The relation between our results and other model calculations is briefly discussed

    Low-Frequency Optical Conductivity in Inhomogeneous d-wave Superconductors

    Motivated by the recent optical conductivity experiments on Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} films, we examine the possible origin of low-frequency dissipation in the superconducting state. In the presence of spatial inhomogeneity of the local phase stiffness rho_s, it is shown that some spectral weight is removed from omega=0 to finite frequencies and contribute to dissipation. A case where both rho_s and the local normal fluid density are inhomogeneous is also considered. We find an enhanced dissipation at low frequency if the two variations are anti-correlated.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.

    Signatures of superconducting gap inhomogeneities in optical properties

    Scanning tunneling spectroscopy applied to the high-TcT_{c} cuprates has revealed significant spatial inhomogeneity on the nanoscale. Regions on the order of a coherence length in size show variations of the magnitude of the superconducting gap of order ±20\pm20% or more. An important unresolved question is whether or not these variations are also present in the bulk, and how they influence superconducting properties. As many theories and data analyses for high-TcT_{c} superconductivity assume spatial homogeneity of the gap magnitude, this is a pressing question. We consider the far-infrared optical conductivity and evaluate, within an effective medium approximation, what signatures of spatial variations in gap magnitude are present in various optical quantities. In addition to the case of d-wave superconductivity, relevant to the high-TcT_c cuprates, we have also considered s-wave gap symmetry in order to provide expected signatures of inhomogeneities for superconductors in general. While signatures of gap inhomogeneities can be strongly manifested in s-wave superconductors, we find that the far-infrared optical conductivity in d-wave is robust against such inhomogeneity.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Experimental fitting to the bipolaronic model of the normal-state resistance of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 single crystals

    Normal-state resistance data from Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 single crystals were fitted to the (bi)polaronic conduction model, R=R0(T+σbT2)/(1+bT)R=R_0 (T+\sigma_b T^2)/(1+bT), with satisfactory agreement over a wide temperature range. The fluctuating conduction region is found to be much narrower than that in the usual sense, as is the case for a charged Bose-gas.
