An optimized planning tool for microwave terrestrial and satellite link design

Today, the internet is fundamental to social inclusion. There are many people that live in remote areas, and the only way to supply internet services is through the use of microwave terrestrial and satellite systems. Thus, it is important to have efficient tools to design and optimize these systems. In this paper, a tool with the objective to shorten the time spent in the design process of microwave terrestrial and satellite point-to-point links is presented. This tool can be applied in academia by engineering students, providing an extended analysis of many sections of a link project design, as well as in professional practice by telecommunication engineering departments, presenting a concise step-by-step interactive design process. This tool uses three-dimensional world visualization, with the Cesium Application Programming Interface (API), to display and analyze site-specific characteristics that can disrupt the link’s quality of service (QoS). Using this visualization, two ray-tracing algorithms were developed to analyze signal diffraction and reflection mainly throughout terrestrial links. Using this new algorithm, an innovative process for signal diffraction and reflection calculations was created. Using updated standards provided by the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R), the characteristics of the defined simulated links could be predicted, thus providing the user with the metrics of signal quality and system link budget.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Derivative chromosome 7 in a newborn with hypotelorism, cleft palate, agenesis of corpus callosum and semilobar holoprosencephaly

Cytogenetically visible unbalanced chromosome rearrangements involving the euchromatic regions most often result in severe phenotypic features. Often, it is not possible at microscopic level to distinguish if a chromosomal anomaly involves one or more than one chromosome. In these cases, the parents study is fundamental and is usually the first line of study. We report a female newborn with multiple anomalies. Ultrasonography at 32+6 weeks of gestation revealed moderate ventricular dilatation, microcephaly and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Delivery was at 35 weeks and microcephaly, hypotelorism, complete medium cleft palate with nasal depression, agenesis of the corpus callosum, thalamic fusion and fusion of the lateral ventricles in the frontal region suggestive of semilobar holoprosencephaly (HPE) was observed. Seizures and nistagmus were described since the eighth day. Hypotonia was present. In addition, diabetes insipidus was diagnosed. Sepsis was developed at day 14 followed by death at day 18 in consequence of seizures and respiratory insuficiency. Cytogenetic analysis revealed an abnormal chromosome 7qter as a result of an unbalanced segregation of a maternal reciprocal translocation t(7;19), with breakpoints at 7q36.1 and 19q13.42. The newborn karyotype is 46,XX,der(7)t(7;19)(q36.1;q13.42)mat. The patient presented a partial trisomy of the region 19q13.42→qter and a partial monosomy of the region 7q36.1→7qter. Partial monosomy of chromosome 7qter has been characterized by a wide phenotypic manifestations, but HPE, microcephaly, midface hypoplasia, maxillary anomalies and sacral agenesis are frequently described. However, is not often reported in newborns. Partial trisomy 19q is a rare and severe condition, and has been described associated with low birth weight, growth retardation, microcephaly, seizures, dysmorphic facial features, short neck, clynodactyly, heart malformations, anomalies of the genitor-urinary and gastrointestinal tract. To our knowledge, there is only one previous case of der(7)t(7q;19q)(q36.1;q13.43) described, in a fetus who presented severe sacral agenesis and IUGR. The case herein reported presents some of the most common features of 7q36 partial monosomy and 19q terminal trisomy, although some of them are present in both conditions. The presence of those two imbalances may complicate the final phenotype but the important matter will be the counseling of the couple and to prevent future imbalances in their offspring.N/

Associations between music training and cognitive abilities: The special case of professional musicians

    Get PDF
We sought to clarify the commonly accepted link between music training and cognitive ability. Professional musicians, nonprofessionals with music training, and musically untrained individuals (N = 642) completed measures of musical ability, personality, and general cognitive ability. Professional musicians scored highest on objective and self-report measures of musical ability. On personality measures, professional musicians and musically trained participants scored similarly but higher than untrained participants on agreeableness, openness-to-experience, and the personality metatrait stability. The professionals scored higher than the other 2 groups on extraversion and the metatrait engagement. On cognitive ability, however, they were indistinguishable from untrained participants. Instead, musically trained nonprofessionals exhibited the highest cognitive ability. In short, professional musicians differed from other individuals in musical ability and personality, but not in cognitive ability. We conclude that music training predicts higher cognitive ability only among individuals who do not become professional musicians and offer possible explanations.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Can musical ability be tested online?

We sought to determine whether an objective test of musical ability could be successfully administered online. A sample of 754 participants was tested with an online version of the Musical Ear Test (MET), which had Melody and Rhythm subtests. Both subtests had 52 trials, each of which required participants to determine whether standard and comparison auditory sequences were identical. The testing session also included the Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index (Gold-MSI), a test of general cognitive ability, and self-report questionnaires that measured basic demographics (age, education, gender), mind-wandering, and personality. Approximately 20% of the participants were excluded for incomplete responding or failing to finish the testing session. For the final sample (N = 608), findings were similar to those from in-person testing in many respects: (1) the internal reliability of the MET was maintained, (2) construct validity was confirmed by strong associations with Gold-MSI scores, (3) correlations with other measures (e.g., openness to experience, cognitive ability, mind-wandering) were as predicted, (4) mean levels of performance were similar for individuals with no music training, and (5) musical sophistication was a better predictor of performance on the Melody than on the Rhythm subtest. In sum, online administration of the MET proved to be a reliable and valid way to measure musical ability.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
