ppmlhdfe: Fast Poisson Estimation with High-Dimensional Fixed Effects

In this paper we present ppmlhdfe, a new Stata command for estimation of (pseudo) Poisson regression models with multiple high-dimensional fixed effects (HDFE). Estimation is implemented using a modified version of the iteratively reweighted least-squares (IRLS) algorithm that allows for fast estimation in the presence of HDFE. Because the code is built around the reghdfe package, it has similar syntax, supports many of the same functionalities, and benefits from reghdfe's fast convergence properties for computing high-dimensional least squares problems. Performance is further enhanced by some new techniques we introduce for accelerating HDFE-IRLS estimation specifically. ppmlhdfe also implements a novel and more robust approach to check for the existence of (pseudo) maximum likelihood estimates.Comment: For associated code and data repository, see https://github.com/sergiocorreia/ppmlhdf

Este artigo é um estudo comparativo do conto AT 956 B (The Clever Maiden Alone at Home Kills the Robbers), centrado na análise de versões portuguesas e espanholas, embora recorrendo a outras tradições europeias e do Norte de África. O objectivo final da análise é estabelecer uma matriz da estrutura deste conto-tipo tal como ele aparece em Portugal, na sua relação com outras tradições próximas. As versões são analizadas tendo em linha de conta os seus aspectos narrativos, simbólicos e etno-sociológicos

La fille difficile: un conte-type africain

Apesar de se encontrar actualmente editado um número apreciável de antologias de contos da tradição oral das diversas etnias africanas da África sub - saariana, tarda em chegar um índice que os classifique de uma forma lógica, sistemática e global. As tentativas até agora feitas ( todas elas vindas de investigadores americanos) só produziran quatro índices de tipos 1 e um índice de motivos 2 incidindo sobre áreas geográficas muito restritas e, consequentemente, aplicados a corpus reduzidos. Seria, pois, indispensável um tal empreendi mento como instrumento de trabalho, fundamental aos estudos comparativos da riquíssima tradição oral africana. Nesse sentido, o aparecimento de obras monográficas que compilem o maior número possível de versões de um mesmo conto provindas de uma área geogr áfica alargada, é pois de grande utilidade para um futuro catálogo de contos africanos

Mechanism of superior B cell transformation by type 1 Epstein-Barr virus

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is characterised by the ability to infect human B lymphocytes in vitro and to transform and immortalise them into lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs). EBV strains can be divided into type 1 and type 2, according to the sequence of the viral EBNA-2 protein. Type 1 strains exhibit a superior capacity to efficiently transform B cells and this was mapped to the type 1 EBNA-2 protein. Substitution of the serine residue located in the transactivation domain (TAD) of type 2 EBNA-2 by the equivalent aspartate-442 of type 1 protein was previously shown to confer a type 1-like cell growth phenotype to type 2. In the present study, a stronger ability to transactivate gene expression was demonstrated for type 1 EBNA-2 TAD in comparison to type 2 EBNA-2 and this was determined by aspartate-442. This residue is located next to the interaction site of the transcriptional repressor BS69 with EBNA-2. BS69 inhibits gene transactivation by type 1 and type 2 EBNA-2 but a higher BS69 affinity for type 2 EBNA-2 protein has been shown in this study. Selective EBNA-2 activation of target promoters is also involved in the differential induction of target genes by type 1 and type 2 EBNA-2. Biotinylated oligonucleotide pulldown assays showed that efficient type 1 EBNA-2 binding at the LMP-1 promoter is dependent on the PU.1 and octamer motifs. Greater binding of type 1 EBNA-2 at the differentially regulated promoters, in conjunction with its stronger transactivation ability, conferred by aspartate-442, may determine the higher induction of the LMP-1 and cellular genes required for cell growth proliferation and therefore result in superior B cell transformation by type 1 EBV.Open Acces
