International audienceThis paper presents a pilot study, which aims at characterizing four types of left-detachment in French. Whereas one of the four constructions is clearly composed of two clauses (a clause being defined as a minimal macro-syntactic unit), it is uncertain whether the other three contain one or two clauses. A bundle of prosodic features are implemented into a statistic model in order to predict the one- or two-clause status of these ambiguous constructions. This quantitative procedure is also a first step to highlight the specific prosodic marking of one- vs. two-clause constructions.

Perceptual investigation of prosodic phrasing in French

International audienceThe aim of this paper is to investigate prosodic phrasing and more precisely the use of prosodic cues in the marking of morphosyntactic units in French. As a first step towards this goal, a perception study was conducted on 27 listeners, who had to perform 3 distinct perceptual tasks on 32 syntactically controlled phrases read by a female speaker: a prominence strength judgment task, a boundary strength judgment task, and a task where listeners had to choose between 4 different phrase groupings intended to reflect the potential choices of prosodic phrasing. The corpus consists of syntactically ambiguous structures manipulating high and low adjective attachment on 2 coordinated nouns. It was designed to specifically test the role of prominence and boundary cues in the marking of prosodic constituency. Our results show that listeners use prosodic cues to discriminate between the two syntactic structures, with boundary cues being more readily used to capture morphosyntactic structuring. More interestingly, our results indicate that prominence and boundary cues are used to distinguish finer-grained grouping levels than those predicted by traditional descriptions on French prosodic structure

International audienceProsodic constituency and phrasing in French: a perception study The aim of the present study is to investigate the organization of prosodic phrasing in French. There is no clear consensus on how many levels are necessary to reflect the prosodic hierarchy in this language. In this context, we propose a perception study on a corpus manipulating syntactically ambiguous structures, where 27 participants had to perform 3 distinct perceptual tasks: prominence, boundary and grouping tasks. Our results show a preferential use of boundary cues in prosodic groups' marking. More precisely, we observe that listeners are able to distinguish finer-grained grouping levels than those predicted in traditional French descriptions. Moreover, the results of the prominence task show that initial accents are always perceived stronger than final accents, even at the lowest levels of the prosodic hierarchy.L'objectif de cette étude est d'explorer l'organisation du phrasé prosodique en français.

Aix Map Task corpus:The French multimodal corpus of task-oriented dialogue

International audienceThis paper introduces the Aix Map Task corpus, a corpus of audio and video recordings of task-oriented dialogues. It was modelled afterthe original HCRC Map Task corpus. Lexical material was designed for the analysis of speech and prosody, as described in (Astésanoet al., 2007). The design of the lexical material, the protocol and some basic quantitative features of the existing corpus are presented. The corpus was collected under two communicative conditions, one audio-only condition and one face-to-face condition. The recordingstook place in a studio and a sound attenuated booth respectively, with head-set microphones (and in the face-to-face condition with twovideo cameras). The recordings have been segmented into Inter-Pausal-Units and transcribed using transcription conventions containingactual productions and canonical forms of what was said. It is made publicly available online

International audienceThis study describes the design and the assessment of a MRI-compatible sound production hardware. This system was developed to permit auditory studies with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques. An important disadvantage caused by the MR imager is the acoustic noise generated during data acquisition, due to the fast gradient switching interacting with the main magnetic field. Several solutions were explored to reduce noise and to provide audio stimuli with a reasonable quality. The sound production system was first tested by instrumental methods (sound level, spectral analysis). Finally, perceptual tests consisting in intelligibility, semantic decision and prosodic judgement were achieved to validate the installation.

The Prosodic Characterization of Reference French

International audienceAfter a brief overview of the phonological and physical parameters of prosody and its main functions in language, this chapter presents the French prosodic system and its specificities with regard to other languages. The French accentuation system, phonetic characteristics of accentuation, and prosodic phrasing are presented in a metrical-descriptive framework, with explicit reference to the tight relationship between accentuation and constituency. This chapter also addresses the issue of the phonological status of accentuation in French. Phonostylistic prosodic variation is discussed with reference to the PFC corpus and the chapter provides the reader with a simple technique to perceptually locate independent, relevant prosodic cues in the corpus. The chapter concludes that comparing laboratory speech models with more spontaneous speech styles is a necessary step to refining those prosodic primitives and applying speech technologies, such as tools for automatic detection of prosodic events, to large corpora

International audienceImitative proficiency across speakers is highly variable. Studies on imitation underline how difficult it is to find measurable cues to assess a successful imitation. In this exploratory study, f0 contours collected from imitations tasks are tested in a double approach: objective measurements of prosodic similarity using two measures reported in the literature and perceptive evaluation by a panel of 15 naïve listeners. Our first results indicate a good correlation between the two approaches and they raise the question concerning the selection of the measurable factor assessing a successful imitation at a tonal level. Furthermore, these results underline an imitative proficiency’s variability across speakers while opening perspectives in the domain of phonetic correction using the Verbo Tonal Method.
