    Detecting changes in the basin of attraction of a dynamical system: Application to the postural restoring system

    A method that provides athree-dimensional representation ofthe basin ofattraction of a dynamical system from experimen tal data was applied tothe problem ofdynamic balance restoration. The method isbased onthe density ofthe data onthe phase space ofthe system under study and makes use ofmodeling and numerical curve fittingtools.For the dynamical system ofbalance restora tion,the shape and the size of the basin of attraction depend on the dynamics of the postural restoring mechanisms and contain important information regarding the biomechanical,as well as the neuromuscular condition of the individual. The aim ofthis work was toexamine the ability ofthe method todetect, through the observed changes inthe shape and/or the size ofthe calculated basins of attraction, (a)the inherent differences between different systems (in the current application, postural restoring systems of different individuals)and (b)induced chan ges in the same system (thepostural restoring system of an individual).The results ofthe study confirm the validity of the method and furthermore justify its robustness

    Rotated balance in humans due to repetitive rotational movement

    We show how asymmetries in the movement patterns during the process of regaining balance after perturbation from quiet stance can be modeled by a set of coupled vector fields for the derivative with respect to time of the angles between the resultant ground reaction forces and the vertical in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions. In our model, which is an adaption of the model of Stirling and Zakynthinaki (2004), the critical curve, defining the set of maximum angles one can lean to and still correct to regain balance, can be rotated and skewed so as to model the effects of a repetitive training of a rotational movement pattern. For the purposes of our study a rotation and a skew matrix is applied to the critical curve of the model. We present here a linear stability analysis of the modified model, as well as a fit of the model to experimental data of two characteristic “asymmetric” elite athletes and to a “symmetric” elite athlete for comparison. The new adapted model has many uses not just in sport but also in rehabilitation, as many work place injuries are caused by excessive repetition of unaligned and rotational movement patterns

    The context of chemical communication driving a mutualism

    Recent work suggests that Drosophila and Saccharomyces yeasts may establish a mutualistic association, and that this is driven by chemical communication. While individual volatiles have been implicated in the attraction of D. melanogaster, the semiochemicals affecting the behavior of the sibling species D. simulans are less well characterised. Here, we comprehensively scrutinize a broad range of volatiles produced by attractive and repulsive yeasts to experimentally evaluate the chemical nature of communication between these species. When grown in liquid or on agar-solidified grape juice, attraction to S. cerevisiae was primarily driven by 3-methylbutyl acetate (isoamyl acetate) and repulsion by acetic acid, a known attractant to D. melanogaster (also known as vinegar fly). Using T-maze choice tests and synthetic compounds we show that these responses were strongly influenced by compound concentration. Moreover, the behavioral response is further impacted by the chemical context of the environment. Thus, chemical communication between yeasts and flies is complex, and is not simply driven by the presence of single volatiles, but modulated by compound interactions. The ecological context of chemical communication needs to be taken into consideration when testing for ecologically realistic responses

    Analysis of the impact of length of stay on the quality of service experience, satisfaction and loyalty

    Although length of stay is a relevant variable in destination management, little research has been produced connecting it with tourists' post-consumption behaviour. This research compares the post-consumption behaviour of same-day visitors with overnight tourists in a sample of 398 domestic vacationers at two Mediterranean heritage-and-beach destinations. Although economic research on length of stay posits that there are destination benefits in longer stays, same-day visitors score higher in most of the post-consumption variables under study. Significant differences arise in hedonic aspects of the tourist experience and destination loyalty. Thus, we propose that length of stay can be used as a segmentation variable. Furthermore, destination management organisations need to consider length of stay when designing tourism policies. The tourist product and communication strategies might be adapted to different vacation durations

    Association between Grape Yeast Communities and the Vineyard Ecosystems

    The grape yeast biota from several wine-producing areas, with distinct soil types and grapevine training systems, was assessed on five islands of Azores Archipelago, and differences in yeast communities composition associated with the geographic origin of the grapes were explored. Fifty-seven grape samples belonging to the Vitis vinifera grapevine cultivars Verdelho dos Acores (Verdelho), Arinto da Terceira (Arinto) and Terrantez do Pico (Terrantez) were collected in two consecutive years and 40 spontaneous fermentations were achieved. A total of 1710 yeast isolates were obtained from freshly crushed grapes and 1200 from final stage of fermentations. Twenty-eight species were identified, Hanseniaspura uvarum, Pichia terricola and Metschnikowia pulcherrima being the three most representative species isolated. Candida carpophila was encountered for the first time as an inhabitant of grape or wine-associated environments. In both sampling years, a higher proportion of H. uvarum in fresh grapes from Verdelho cultivar was observed, in comparison with Arinto cultivar. Qualitatively significant differences were found among yeast communities from several locations on five islands of the Archipelago, particularly in locations with distinctive agro-ecological compositions. Our results are in agreement with the statement that grape-associated microbial biogeography is non-randomly associated with interactions of climate, soil, cultivar, and vine training systems in vineyard ecosystems. Our observations strongly support a possible linkage between grape yeast and wine typicality, reinforcing the statement that different viti-cultural terroirs harbor distinctive yeast biota, in particular in vineyards with very distinctive environmental conditions.Joao Drumonde Neves is the recipient of a fellowship of the Azorean Government (M321/006/F/2008) and PROEMPREGO.     Isolation of sulfite reductase variants of a commercial wine yeast with significantly reduced hydrogen sulfide production

All rights reserved.The production of hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) during fermentation is a common and significant problem in the global wine industry as it imparts undesirable off-flavors at low concentrations. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae plays a crucial role in the production of volatile sulfur compounds in wine. In this respect, H(2)S is a necessary intermediate in the assimilation of sulfur by yeast through the sulfate reduction sequence with the key enzyme being sulfite reductase. In this study, we used a classical mutagenesis method to develop and isolate a series of strains, derived from a commercial diploid wine yeast (PDM), which showed a drastic reduction in H(2)S production in both synthetic and grape juice fermentations. Specific mutations in the MET10 and MET5 genes, which encode the catalytic alpha- and beta-subunits of the sulfite reductase enzyme, respectively, were identified in six of the isolated strains. Fermentations with these strains indicated that, in comparison with the parent strain, H(2)S production was reduced by 50-99%, depending on the strain. Further analysis of the wines made with the selected strains indicated that basic chemical parameters were similar to the parent strain except for total sulfite production, which was much higher in some of the mutant strains.Antonio G.     A novel approach for the extraction of herbicides and pesticides from water using liquid-core microcapsules

    A perstraction system using liq.-core microcapsules for pesticide and herbicide removal from aq. environments is proposed. The microcapsules contain an oil, di-Bu sebacate, surrounded by a hydrogel membrane. The extn. efficiency of the capsules was demonstrated with atrazine, methylparathion, ethylparathion, and 2,4-dichloro-phenoxyacetic acid. The results show that all of the tested compds. could be rapidly extd., typically 75% extn. within 10 min using a capsule: liq. vol. ratio of only 3.5% for ethylparathion, and that the rate of extn. increased with increasing hydrophobicity of the compd. to be extd. Higher rates of extn. could be achieved by changing the capsule: liq. vol. ratio. The effect of different liq. core solvents, size of capsules, agitation rate, and treatment with complexing agents on the properties of the microcapsules and extn. rate were studied. Capsules of a diam. <0.800 mm show little external resistance to mass transfer. The main resistance to mass transfer of the pesticides/herbicides resided in the hydrogel membrane composed of crosslinked alginate/polyacrylamide. Removal of divalent cations from the membrane by the addn. of citrate, resulted in a 50% increase in the mass transfer coeff., probably as a result of solubilization and exo-diffusion of alginate.     Abstract: The present study validates use of a dumbbell to simulate the air pistol in female Olympic shooting, examining, at the same time, the relation between body sway and performance. The study&apos;s participants were 23 senior female Olympic pistol shooters who competed at a Spanish air pistol championship. The participants&apos; performance was measured at competition while their COP movements were recorded during two static bipodal balance tests which were performed the day previous to the competition, during the official training time and at the training stands. During one of the tests a 1.5 kg dumbbell was used to simulate the pistol. The calculated Pearson product moment correlations for all variables that refer to the movement of the COP revealed statistically significant correlations between the two tests. Statistically significant inverse linear correlations were also found between performance and COP movements regarding both tests: strong correlations regarding COP movement amplitudes and moderate correlations regarding COP velocities. The study concludes that a) a dumbbell can be validly used to simulate the pistol in female Olympic air pistol shooting, and b) specific balance training programs should be taken into account in order to improve performance in female air pistol shooting
