This article aims to present and discuss some reflections about an ongoing research project on the current movement for affirmative action on behalf of Portuguese speakers in Metropolitan Boston, Massachusetts, through a cross-cutting perspective combining ethnography and social history within a socio-anthropological analysis. The focus is on the interactive relationships among different Portuguese speaking immigrants and its descendants within a nonprofit association, Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, MAPS. What makes so interesting the 'Portuguese-speaking' case is the way it includes within a single category a very disparate set of populations and identities, including their contrastive migratory history and pathways of incorporation and, also, their different mother tongues (Portuguese and Kriolu)

Reduction and construction of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifolds with background

We extend the Falceto-Zambon version of Marsden-Ratiu Poisson reduction to Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures with background on manifolds. We define gauge transformations of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures with background, study some of their properties and show that they are compatible with reduction procedure. Participative social work and urban change: two case studies in Lisbon and Bucharest

Focusing on two initiatives working within disadvantaged urban neighborhoods in Bucharest and Lisbon, we want to discuss the civil society’s capacity to adapt to the changing social opportunities and difficul-ties, and its ability to create equal access to resources and opportunities. We propose to compare some aspects of both initiatives in these two historical and socio-political Southern European urban contexts, trying to better understand these processes: what they manage to do; what they find hard to do; who helps them; their relationships with different state structures (municipality, schools, national agencies etc.); their relationships with different people in the area of work; their future perspective, and so on. Our diverse social activist and academic background in anthropological, sociological, geographical fields allows us to a deeper understanding of the strengths and limits of theoretical and practical dimensions of social research process, witch we would like to discuss, also

Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension Treated with a Targeted CT-Guided Epidural Blood Patch

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is an important cause of new daily persistent headache. It is thought to be due to spontaneous spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, which probably have a multifactorial etiology. The classic manifestation of SIH is an orthostatic headache, but other neurological symptoms may be present. An epidural blood patch is thought to be the most effective treatment, but a blind infusion may be ineffective. We describe the case of a young man who developed an acute severe headache, with pain worsening when assuming an upright posture and relief gained with recumbency. No history of previous headache, recent cranial or cervical trauma, or invasive procedures was reported. Magnetic resonance imaging showed pachymeningeal enhancement and other features consistent with SIH and pointed towards a cervical CSF leak site. From the web of bibliographic data to the web of bibliographic meaning: structuring, interlinking and validating ontologies on the semantic web

Bibliographic data sets have revealed good levels of technical interoperability observing the principles and good practices of linked data. However, they have a low level of quality from the semantic point of view, due to many factors: lack of a common conceptual framework for a diversity of standards often used together, reduced number of links between the ontologies underlying data sets, proliferation of heterogeneous vocabularies, underuse of semantic mechanisms in data structures, "ontology hijacking" (Feeney et al., 2018), point-to-point mappings, as well as limitations of semantic web languages for the requirements of bibliographic data interoperability. Propagação de mogno (Swietenia macrophylla King) por miniestaquia.

O objetivo do trabalho foi propagar a espécie Swietenia Macrophylla King pela técnica de miniestaquia como alternativa de potencializar a produção de mudas visando a conservação da espécie. Foram utilizadas miniestacas provenientes de brotações coletadas de plantas rejuvenescidas por estaqueamento convencional. As miniestacas foram imersas em solução de AIB e ANA em diferentes concentrações, tipo de estaca, tempo de imersão e postas em câmara úmida. A utilização de rebrotos oriundos de estacas de plantas de mogno selecionadas cultivadas no plantio são fontes de material de propagação pela técnica de miniestaquia e miniestacas de mogno das posições basal e mediana imersas por 5 minutos em solução de 1000 e 2000 ppm de AIB são as mais eficientes no enraizamento

The Beta Generalized Exponential Distribution

We introduce the beta generalized exponential distribution that includes the beta exponential and generalized exponential distributions as special cases. We provide a comprehensive mathematical treatment of this distribution. We derive the moment generating function and the $r$th moment thus generalizing some results in the literature. Expressions for the density, moment generating function and $r$th moment of the order statistics also are obtained. We discuss estimation of the parameters by maximum likelihood and provide the information matrix. We observe in one application to real data set that this model is quite flexible and can be used quite effectively in analyzing positive data in place of the beta exponential and generalized exponential distributions

Cystic lymphangioma (CL) is a rare benign tumor, which occurs typically during childhood, with craniofacial, cervical or axillary being the most common locations. Lymphangiomas management can be challenging due to their permeative growth throughout tissue layers. Sirolimus is an immunosuppressive and antitumor agent that can inhibit abnormal vascular proliferation by blocking the mTOR/PI3K pathway. It is typically well-tolerated, with nausea, cytopenias, and metabolic imbalances as the most significant adverse effects. Small-sample corrections for score tests in Birnbaum-Saunders regressions

In this paper we deal with the issue of performing accurate small-sample inference in the Birnbaum-Saunders regression model, which can be useful for modeling lifetime or reliability data. We derive a Bartlett-type correction for the score test and numerically compare the corrected test with the usual score test, the likelihood ratio test and its Bartlett-corrected version.
