    Optimizing local protocols implementing nonlocal quantum gates

    We present a method of optimizing recently designed protocols for implementing an arbitrary nonlocal unitary gate acting on a bipartite system. These protocols use only local operations and classical communication with the assistance of entanglement, and are deterministic while also being "one-shot", in that they use only one copy of an entangled resource state. The optimization is in the sense of minimizing the amount of entanglement used, and it is often the case that less entanglement is needed than with an alternative protocol using two-way teleportation.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure.     Measuring non-financial forms of capital

    This chapter turns to the measurement of performance in delivering corporate and ecosystem purposes. The metrics are designed to capture the pain points in the ecosystem that need to be addressed and the success of the intervention in addressing them. This requires measures of non-financial as well as financial performance. The chapter provides an overview of measurements of non-financial forms of capital: natural, human, and social. In examining natural capital, it contrasts input measures that record the amount of natural resources that are used in the production process and output measures that examine the impact of the inputs on products, emissions, waste, etc. It notes that measuring inputs is in general more straightforward than outputs and it therefore argues that natural capital metrics should be constructed around inputs rather than outputs

    Gevrey local solvability in locally integrable structures

    We consider a locally integrable real-analytic structure, and we investigate the local solvability in the category of Gevrey functions and ultradistributions of the complex d' naturally induced by the de Rham complex. We prove that the so-called condition Y(q) on the signature of the Levi form, for local solvability of d' u=f, is still necessary even if we take f in the classes of Gevrey functions and look for solutions u in the corresponding spaces of ultradistributions.Comment: 12 page

    Galvanic Deposition of Hydroxyapatite/Chitosan/Collagen Coatings on 304 Stainless Steel

    The galvanic deposition method was used to deposit Hydroxyapatite/Chitosan/Collagen coatings on 304 stainless steel. Galvanic deposition is an alternative and valid way to fabricate bio-coatings with high biocompatibility and good anticorrosion properties. Physical-chemical characterizations were carried out to investigate chemical composition and morphology of the samples. Coatings consist of a mixture of calcium phosphate (Brushite and Hydroxyapatite) with chitosan and collagen. Corrosion tests were performed in the simulated body fluid (SBF) after different aging times. Results show that, in comparison with bare 304 stainless steel, coating shifts corrosion potential to anodic values and reduces corrosion current density. Nevertheless, the aging in SBF led to a completely conversion of brushite into hydroxyapatite. The release of metal ions, measured after 21 days of aging in SBF solution, is very low due to the presence of coating that slow-down the corrosion rate of steel

    N=8 gaugings revisited: an exhaustive classification

    In this paper we reconsider, for N=8 supergravity, the problem of gauging the most general electric subgroup. We show that admissible theories are fully characterized by a single algebraic equation to be satisfied by the embedding of the gauge group G within the electric subalgebra SL(8,\IR) of E_{7(7)}. The complete set of solutions to this equation contains 36 parameters. Modding by the action of SL(8,\IR) conjugations that yield equivalent theories all continuous parameters are eliminated except for an overall coupling constant and we obtain a discrete set of orbits. This set is in one--to--one correspondence with 36 Lie subalgebras of SL(8,\IR), corresponding to all possible real forms of the SO(8) Lie algebra plus a set of contractions thereof. By means of our analysis we establish the theorem that the N=8 gaugings constructed by Hull in the middle eighties constitute the exhaustive set of models. As a corollary we show that there exists a unique 7--dimensional abelian gauging. The corresponding abelian algebra is not contained in the maximal abelian ideal of the solvable Lie algebra generating the scalar manifold E_{7(7)}/SU(8).Comment: 1 LaTeX file, 41 pages, 3 eps-figure

    Effect of sub‐marginal instrumentation before surgical treatment of peri‐implantitis: A multi‐centre randomized clinical trial

    Aim: The present multi-centre randomized clinical trial with 12 months of follow-up aimed at studying the added effect of sub-marginal instrumentation before surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. Materials and Methods: Forty-two patients diagnosed with peri-implantitis were recruited. After a behavioural intervention phase including oral hygiene instructions, patients were randomized to either receiving supra- and sub-marginal instrumentation on their affected implants (control group: 21 patients and 29 implants) or only supra-marginal instrumentation (test group: 21 patients and 24 implants), before undergoing surgery. Changes in the deepest probing pocket depth (PPD) with respect to baseline and a composite outcome of treatment success (no implant loss, no bone loss > 0.5 mm, no bleeding or suppuration on probing [BoP/SoP], and PPD ≤ 5 mm) at the 12-month examination were regarded as the primary outcomes of the trial. Results: At the 12-month examination, changes in the deepest PPD with respect to baseline amounted to ¬-2.96 mm in the control group and to -3.11 mm in the test one (MD = -0.16; SE = 0.56; p = .769), while 21.4% of the implants in the control group and 33.3% in the test group presented treatment success (OR = 1.83; SE = 1.15; p = .338). With the exception of a longer non-surgical treatment duration in the control group (differences in = -14.29 min; SE = 2.91; p < .001), no other secondary (e.g., soft-tissue recession, keratinized mucosa height, and bone level changes, as well as BoP, SoP, profuse bleeding and implant loss rates) or exploratory (i.e., early wound healing, aesthetics, surgical and total treatment duration, surgery difficulty, intra-operative bleeding, and adverse events) outcome demonstrated statistically significant differences between groups. Conclusions: The present multi-centre randomized clinical trial did not demonstrate an added effect of performing sub-marginal instrumentation 6 weeks before the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. Larger clinical trials are however needed to confirm the present findings (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03620331)
