    Ambient vertical flow in long-screen wells: a case study in the Fontainebleau Sands Aquifer (France)

    A tritium (3H) profile was constructed in a long-screened well (LSW) of the Fontainebleau Sands Aquifer (France), and the data were combined with temperature logs to gain insight into the potential effects of the ambient vertical flow (AVF) of water through the well on the natural aquifer stratification. AVF is commonly taken into account in wells located in fracture aquifers or intercepting two different aquifers with distinct hydraulic heads. However, due to the vertical hydraulic gradient of the flow lines intercepted by wells, AVF of groundwater is a common process within any type of aquifer. The detection of 3H in the deeper parts of the studied well (approximate depth 50m), where 3H-free groundwater is expected, indicates that shallow young water is being transported downwards through the well itself. The temperature logs show a nearly zero gradient with depth, far below the mean geothermal gradient in sedimentary basins. The results show that the age distribution of groundwater samples might be biased in relation to the age distribution in the surroundings of the well.     Determining 241Pu in environmental samples: case studies in alpine soils

    A procedure was developed for determining 241Pu activity in environmental samples. This beta emitter isotope of plutonium was measured by ultra low level liquid scintillation, after several separation and purification steps that involved the use of a highly selective extraction chromatographic resin (Eichrom-TEVA). Due to the lack of reference material for 241Pu, the method was nevertheless validated using four IAEA reference sediments with information values for 241Pu. Next, the method was used to determine the 241Pu activity in alpine soils of Switzerland and France. The 241Pu/239,240Pu and 238Pu/239,240Pu activity ratios confirmed that Pu contamination in the tested alpine soils originated mainly from global fallout from nuclear weapon tests conducted in the fifties and sixties. Estimation of the date of the contamination, using the 241Pu/241Am age-dating method, further confirmed this origin. However, the 241Pu/241Am dating method was limited to samples where Pu-Am fractionation was insignificant. If any, the contribution of the Chernobyl accident is negligibl

    A new method for the determination of plutonium and americium using high pressure microwave digestion and alpha-spectrometry or ICP-SMS

    Plutonium and americium are radionuclides particularly difficult to measure in environmental samples because they are α-emitters and therefore necessitate a careful separation before any measurement, either using radiometric methods or ICP-SMS. Recent developments in extraction chromatography resins such as Eichrom® TRU and TEVA have resolved many of the analytical problems but drawbacks such as low recovery and spectral interferences still occasionally occur. Here, we report on the use of the new Eichrom® DGA resin in association with TEVA resin and high pressure microwave acid leaching for the sequential determination of plutonium and americium in environmental samples. The method results in average recoveries of 83±15% for plutonium and 73±22% for americium (n=60), and a less than 10% deviation from reference values of four IAEA reference materials and three samples from intercomparisons exercises.     La hiperreactividad cardiovascular y su asociación con factores de riesgo cardiovasculares

    Fundamento: diversos estudios demuestran una estrecha relación entre el fenómeno de hiperreactividad cardiovascular y los factores de riesgo cardiovasculares, sin embargo, sigue siendo pertinente el aporte de nuevas evidencias que así lo corroboren. Objetivo: determinar la asociación entre la reactividad cardiovascular, en los individuos normotensos, y los factores de riesgo cardiovasculares. Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo correlacional de corte transversal. El universo estuvo conformado por la población entre 15 y 74 años del área urbana del municipio Cienfuegos, la muestra fue de 644 personas evaluadas en el año 2010. Se consideraron como variables: sexo, color de la piel, edad, talla, peso, índice de masa corporal, cintura abdominal, triglicéridos, colesterol, HDL colesterol y glucemia en ayunas. Se calculó el Chi cuadrado y la razón de prevalencia con un intervalo de confianza del 95 %. Resultados: la prevalencia de hiperreactividad cardiovascular fue de 42,3 %. Se observó una razón de prevalencia de 51,3 % en los hombres y 36,8 % en las mujeres, sobrepasó el 65 % en los individuos con más de 64 años. Fue aumentando a medida que se incrementaba la edad, el mayor el porcentaje de hiperreactivos en obesos y sobrepesos, también fueron significativos los niveles de triglicéridos relacionados con la hiperreactividad cardiovascular. Conclusiones: existe asociación entre la hiperreactividad cardiovascular y los factores de riesgo cardiovasculares como: obesidad, hipertrigliceridemia e hipercolesterolemia en los individuos normotensos, situación que se mantiene aún en los individuos no obesos

    Rapid processing of ⁸⁵5 Kr/Kr ratios using Atom Trap Trace Analysis

    We report a methodology for measuring ⁸⁵ Kr/Kr isotopic abundances using Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) that increases sample measurement throughput by over an order of magnitude to six samples per 24 h. The noble gas isotope ⁸⁵ Kr (half-life 510.7 years) is a useful tracer for young groundwater in the age range of 5–50 years. ATTA, an efficient and selective laser-based atom counting method, has recently been applied to ⁸⁵ Kr/Kr isotopic abundance measurements, requiring 5–10 μL of krypton gas at STP extracted from 50 to 100 L of water. Previously, a single such measurement required 48 h. Our new method demonstrates that we can measure 85Kr/Kr ratios with 3–5% relative uncertainty every 4 h, on average, with the same sample requirements

    Simultaneous determination of Pu and Am radioisotopes in environmental samples: a tool for determining origin and release date

    A radiochemical procedure was developed for the sequential determination of Pu and Am radioisotopes in environmental samples. The radioisotope activities were then used to assess the origin and release date of the environmental plutonium. The radioanalytical procedure is based on the separation of Pu and Am on selective extraction chromatographic resins (Eichrom TEVA and DGA). Alpha sources were prepared by electrodeposition on stainless steel discs, and the alpha emitting radionuclides (238Pu, 239,240Pu and 241Am) were measured by alpha spectrometry. For the determination of the beta emitting 241Pu, the Pu alpha source was leached in hot concentrated nitric acid and the Pu fraction further purified by extraction chromatography on a small column of TEVA resin (100 μg of resin in a pipette tip). 241Pu is then measured by ultra low level liquid scintillation counting. Due to the lack of reference material for 241Pu, the proposed radiochemical method was nevertheless validated using four IAEA reference sediments with information values of 241Pu. The proposed method was then used to determine the 238Pu, 239,240Pu, 241Pu and 241Am activity concentrations in alpine soils of France and Switzerland. The soil is the primary receptor of the atmospheric radioactive fallout and, because of the strong binding interaction with soils particles, the isotopes are little fractionated. Therefore, the activity ratios 241Pu/239+240Pu and 238Pu/239,240Pu in soil samples were used to determine the origin (source) and date of the Pu contamination in the investigated alpine sites. The 241Pu/239,240Pu and 238Pu/239,240Pu activity ratios confirmed that the main origin of Pu in the alpine soils was the global fallout from the nuclear bomb tests (NBT) in the fifties and sixties. Furthermore, the 241Pu/241Am activity ratios were used to determine the age of the Pu contamination, which is also an important data for distinguishing the Pu sources. The estimation of the date of the contamination, by the 241Pu/241Am age-dating method, further confirmed the NBT as the Pu source. However, the 241Pu/241Am dating method was limited to samples where Pu-Am fractionation was insignificant. If any, the contribution of the Chernobyl accident in the studied sites is negligible
