Functional diversity of chemokines and chemokine receptors in response to viral infection of the central nervous system.
Encounters with neurotropic viruses result in varied outcomes ranging from encephalitis, paralytic poliomyelitis or other serious consequences to relatively benign infection. One of the principal factors that control the outcome of infection is the localized tissue response and subsequent immune response directed against the invading toxic agent. It is the role of the immune system to contain and control the spread of virus infection in the central nervous system (CNS), and paradoxically, this response may also be pathologic. Chemokines are potent proinflammatory molecules whose expression within virally infected tissues is often associated with protection and/or pathology which correlates with migration and accumulation of immune cells. Indeed, studies with a neurotropic murine coronavirus, mouse hepatitis virus (MHV), have provided important insight into the functional roles of chemokines and chemokine receptors in participating in various aspects of host defense as well as disease development within the CNS. This chapter will highlight recent discoveries that have provided insight into the diverse biologic roles of chemokines and their receptors in coordinating immune responses following viral infection of the CNS
Nonanticommutative Deformation of N=4 SYM Theory: The Myers Effect and Vacuum States
We propose a deformation of SYM theoery induced by
nonanticommutative star product. The deformation introduces new bosonic terms
which we identify with the corresponding Myers terms of a stack of D3-branes in
the presence of a five-form RR flux. We take this as an indication that the
deformed lagrangian describes D3-branes in such a background. The vacuum states
of the theory are also examined. In a specific case where the U(1) part of the
gauge field is nonvanishing the (anti)holomorphic transverse coordinates of the
brane sit on a fuzzy two sphere. For a supersymmetric vacuum the
antiholomorphic coordinates must necessarily commute. However, we also
encounter non-supersymmetric vacua for which the antiholomorphic coordinates do
not commute.Comment: 14 pages, minor changes, refs. adde
Long-term perturbations due to a disturbing body in elliptic inclined orbit
In the current study, a double-averaged analytical model including the action
of the perturbing body's inclination is developed to study third-body
perturbations. The disturbing function is expanded in the form of Legendre
polynomials truncated up to the second-order term, and then is averaged over
the periods of the spacecraft and the perturbing body. The efficiency of the
double-averaged algorithm is verified with the full elliptic restricted
three-body model. Comparisons with the previous study for a lunar satellite
perturbed by Earth are presented to measure the effect of the perturbing body's
inclination, and illustrate that the lunar obliquity with the value 6.68\degree
is important for the mean motion of a lunar satellite. The application to the
Mars-Sun system is shown to prove the validity of the double-averaged model. It
can be seen that the algorithm is effective to predict the long-term behavior
of a high-altitude Martian spacecraft perturbed by Sun. The double-averaged
model presented in this paper is also applicable to other celestial systems.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figure
Strings on conifolds from strong coupling dynamics, part I
A method to solve various aspects of the strong coupling expansion of the
superconformal field theory duals of AdS_5 x X geometries from first principles
is proposed. The main idea is that at strong coupling the configurations that
dominate the low energy dynamics of the field theory compactified on a three
sphere are given by certain non-trivial semi-classical configurations in the
moduli space of vacua.
We show that this approach is self-consistent and permits one to express most
of the dynamics in terms of an effective N=4 SYM dynamics. This has the
advantage that some degrees of freedom that move the configurations away from
moduli space can be treated perturbatively, unifying the essential low energy
dynamics of all of these theories. We show that with this formalism one can
compute the energies of strings in the BMN limit in the Klebanov-Witten theory
from field theory considerations, matching the functional form of results found
using AdS geometry. This paper also presents various other technical results
for the semiclassical treatment of superconformal field theories.Comment: 52 pages, JHEP3 styl

Supramolecular chemistry enables vat photopolymerization 3D printing of novel water-soluble tablets
YesVat photopolymerization has garnered interest from pharmaceutical researchers for the fabrication of personalised medicines, especially for drugs that require high precision dosing or are heat labile. However, the 3D printed structures created thus far have been insoluble, limiting printable dosage forms to sustained-release systems or drug-eluting medical devices which do not require dissolution of the printed matrix. Resins that produce water-soluble structures will enable more versatile drug release profiles and expand potential applications. To achieve this, instead of employing cross-linking chemistry to fabricate matrices, supramolecular chemistry may be used to impart dynamic interaction between polymer chains. In this study, water-soluble drug-loaded printlets (3D printed tablets) are fabricated via digital light processing (DLP) 3DP for the first time. Nonlinear Integer Programming
Research efforts of the past fifty years have led to a development of linear
integer programming as a mature discipline of mathematical optimization. Such a
level of maturity has not been reached when one considers nonlinear systems
subject to integrality requirements for the variables. This chapter is
dedicated to this topic.
The primary goal is a study of a simple version of general nonlinear integer
problems, where all constraints are still linear. Our focus is on the
computational complexity of the problem, which varies significantly with the
type of nonlinear objective function in combination with the underlying
combinatorial structure. Numerous boundary cases of complexity emerge, which
sometimes surprisingly lead even to polynomial time algorithms.
We also cover recent successful approaches for more general classes of
problems. Though no positive theoretical efficiency results are available, nor
are they likely to ever be available, these seem to be the currently most
successful and interesting approaches for solving practical problems.
It is our belief that the study of algorithms motivated by theoretical
considerations and those motivated by our desire to solve practical instances
should and do inform one another. So it is with this viewpoint that we present
the subject, and it is in this direction that we hope to spark further
research.Comment: 57 pages. To appear in: M. J\"unger, T. Liebling, D. Naddef, G.

The remodelling index risk stratifies patients with hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy
Aims Hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is associated with increased cardiovascular events. We previously developed the remodelling index (RI) that incorporated left ventricular (LV) volume and wall-thickness in a single measure of advanced hypertrophy in hypertensive patients. This study examined the prognostic potential of the RI in reference to contemporary LVH classifications. Methods and results Cardiovascular magnetic resonance was performed in 400 asymptomatic hypertensive patients. The newly derived RI ((3)root EDV/t, where EDV is LV end-diastolic volume and t is the maximal wall thickness across 16 myocardial segments) stratified hypertensive patients: no LVH, LVH with normal RI (LVHNormal-RI), and LVH with low RI (LVHLow-RI). The primary outcome was a composite of all-cause mortality, acute coronary syndromes, strokes, and decompensated heart failure. LVHLow-RI was associated with increased LV mass index, fibrosis burden, impaired myocardial function and elevated biochemical markers of myocardial injury (high-sensitive cardiac troponin I), and wall stress. Over 18.3 +/- 7.0 months (601.3 patient-years), 14 adverse events occurred (2.2 events/100 patient-years). Patients with LVHLow-RI had more than a five-fold increase in adverse events compared to those with LVHNormal-RI (11.6 events/100 patient-years vs. 2.0 events/100 patient-years, respectively; log-rank P < 0.001). The RI provided incremental prognostic value over and above a model consisting of clinical variables, LVH and concentricity; and predicted adverse events independent of clinical variables, LVH, and other prognostic markers. Concentric and eccentric LVH were associated with adverse prognosis (log-rank P = 0.62) that was similar to the natural history of hypertensive LVH (5.1 events/100 patient-years).Conclusion The RI provides prognostic value that improves risk stratification of hypertensive LVH.Cardiolog
