Inclusive, Accessible, and Successful: Is it Possible? ​A Case Study Analysis of How to Curate an Enduring Justice-Centered Farmers Market in Lewiston, ME​

Food Security is the physical and economic access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food at all levels of society to ensure a healthy and happy lifestyle for all people; this theme intersects with other topics such as food justice, food deserts, and food sovereignty. In the United States, 11.4 % of the population receives Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Benefits (SNAP) while in Maine, 12.1% do and in Lewiston, this number more than doubles, with 24.4% of the local population receiving SNAP benefits. Thus, Lewiston, Maine provides an interesting locale to understand how the national, regional, and local food system impacts local communities. This paper examines the role that the Lewiston Farmers Markets plays in feeding the local community and sustaining local agriculture. In the face of the COVID 19 pandemic and in part due to a major location change, the Lewiston Farmers Market has experienced periods of instability in its attempt to address food insecurity. To understand how to maximize the market\u27s impact, I conducted a case study analysis on three markets in New England cities with varying similarities and differences to Lewiston. Ultimately, I am curious what characteristics the Lewiston Farmers Market might be able to embody to reach its maximum potential. In partnership with Sherie Blumenthal of St. Marys, Ben Daley of Chirp Creek Farm, Mahamed of New Roots, Jessica Bonifas of The Market @ Mill No. 5, Jinger Hallowell at the Brunswick Winter Market, and Cara Mitchell at Farm Fresh’s Providence market, I explore these topics to eventually make a recommendation for Lewiston

Apolipoprotein E isoforms disrupt long-chain fatty acid distribution in the plasma, the liver and the adipose tissue of mice

Evidences suggest that omega-3 fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) metabolism is imbalanced in apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 isoform carriers (APOE4). This study aimed to investigate APOE genotype-dependant modulation of FA profiles, protein and enzyme important to fatty acid (FA) metabolism in the adipose tissue, the liver and the plasma using human APOE-targeted replacement mouse-model (N=37). FA transport (FATP) and binding (FABP) protein levels in tissues and concentrations of liver carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1) were performed. N-3 PUFA concentration was >45% lower in the adipose tissue and liver of APOE4 mice compared to APOE3 mice. In APOE4 mice, there were higher levels of FATP and FABP in the liver and higher FATP in the adipose tissue compared to APOE2 mice. There was a trend towards higher CPT1 concentrations in APOE4 mice compared to APOE3 mice. Therefore, since APOE-isoform differences were not always in line with the unbalanced n-3 PUFA profiles in organs, other proteins may be involved in maintaining n-3 PUFA homeostasis in mice with different APOE-isoforms

LCOGT Network Observatory Operations

We describe the operational capabilities of the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network. We summarize our hardware and software for maintaining and monitoring network health. We focus on methodologies to utilize the automated system to monitor availability of sites, instruments and telescopes, to monitor performance, permit automatic recovery, and provide automatic error reporting. The same jTCS control system is used on telescopes of apertures 0.4m, 0.8m, 1m and 2m, and for multiple instruments on each. We describe our network operational model, including workloads, and illustrate our current tools, and operational performance indicators, including telemetry and metrics reporting from on-site reductions. The system was conceived and designed to establish effective, reliable autonomous operations, with automatic monitoring and recovery - minimizing human intervention while maintaining quality. Geology of the Neruda quadrangle (H13), Mercury

We present the first geological map of the Neruda Quadrangle (H13), Mercury. H13 is in Mercury’s southern hemisphere between latitudes 22.5°S–65°S, and longitudes 90°E–180° covering a total area of just under 5 million km², equivalent to 6.5% of the planet’s surface. Map digitisation was carried out at scales between 1:300,000 and 1:700,000 for final presentation at 1:3,000,0000, from end-of-mission data products from NASA’s MESSENGER mission. We distinguish three main photogeologic plains units: intercrater, intermediate, and smooth plains. We also distinguish all craters and their materials ≥ 20 km in diameter based on their degradation state. We have completed two versions of the map, one using a three-class crater degradation scheme and one using a five-class crater degradation scheme. In addition, specific geological units were charted for the Rembrandt impact basin. This map has been constructed to provide context and targets for the ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury

Can a lifestyle intervention be offered through NHS breast cancer screening?:Challenges and opportunities identified in a qualitative study of women attending screening

Background: Around one third of breast cancers in post-menopausal women could be prevented by decreasing body fatness and alcohol intake and increasing physical activity. This study aimed to explore views and attitudes on lifestyle intervention approaches in order to inform the proposed content of a lifestyle intervention programme amongst women attending breast cancer screening. Methods: Women attending breast cancer screening clinics in Dundee and Glasgow, were invited to participate in focus group discussions (FGD) by clinic staff. The groups were convened out with the clinic setting and moderated by an experienced researcher who attained brief details on socio-demographic background and audio-recorded the discussions. Data analysis was guided by the framework approach. The main topics of enquiry were: Understanding of risk of breast cancer and its prevention, views on engaging with a lifestyle intervention programme offered through breast cancer screening and programme design and content. Results: Thirty one women attended 5 focus groups. Participant ages ranged from 51 to 78 years and 38 % lived in the two most deprived quintiles of residential areas. Women were generally positive about being offered a programme at breast cancer screening but sceptical about lifestyle associated risk, citing genetics, bad luck and knowing women with breast cancer who led healthy lifestyles as reasons to query the importance of lifestyle. Engagement via clinic staff and delivery of the programme by lifestyle coaches out with the screening setting was viewed favourably. The importance of body weight, physical activity and alcohol consumption with disease was widely known although most were surprised at the association with breast cancer. They were particularly surprised about the role of alcohol and resistant to thinking about themselves having a problem. They expressed frustration that lifestyle guidance was often conflicting and divergent over time. The concept of focussing on small lifestyle changes, which were personalised, supported socially and appropriate to age and ability were welcomed. Conclusions: Offering access to a lifestyle programme through breast screening appears acceptable. Explaining the relevance of the target behaviours for breast cancer health, endorsing and utilising consistent messages and identifying personalised, mutually agreed, behaviour change goals provides a framework for programme development
