    Human factors addresses humans in their active and interactive capacities, i.e., in the mental and physical activities that they perform and in the contributions they make to achieving the goals of the mission. The overall goal of space human factors in NASA is to support the safety, productivity, and reliability of both the on-board crew and the ground support staff. Safety and reliability are fundamental requirements that human factors shares with other disciplines, while productivity represents the defining contribution of the human factors discipline

    Issues on combining human and non-human intelligence

    The purpose here is to call attention to some of the issues confronting the designer of a system that combines human and non-human intelligence. We do not know how to design a non-human intelligence in such a way that it will fit naturally into a human organization. The author's concern is that, without adequate understanding and consideration of the behavioral and psychological limitations and requirements of the human member(s) of the system, the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) subsystems can exacerbate operational problems. We have seen that, when these technologies are not properly applied, an overall degradation of performance at the system level can occur. Only by understanding how human and automated systems work together can we be sure that the problems introduced by automation are not more serious than the problems solved

    Concepts for the Design of Human-Autonomy Systems

    Over the last two years a number of workshops or similar meetings have been held under the auspice of NASA Ames Research Center that, although dealing with different primary foci, considered at some level the cross-cutting topic of humans-autonomous systems and the partnership between them. This publication presents findings from the reports of these meetings as they inform the process of designing autonomous systems to work in conjunction with humans. Some workshops were highly relevant to this question, others less so. Drawing from conclusions in these reports, this publication presents, at a high level, a summary of issues that could usefully be considered in the design process of automated systems working with human agents. Although differing in emphases, reports from the several workshops reflect many similar beliefs regarding human-autonomy teaming (HAT). Conclusions can be viewed as generally applicable to various aviation venuesair, ground, and air-ground interactions. The objective of the workshops was primarily to identify issues, concerns, and research needs associated with evolving human-autonomy systemsnot in providing solutions. The analysis herewithin is generally limited to the findings in the workshop reports. And, since there was often commonality in findings among the several reports, no attempt is made to ascribe particular findings or observations to particular reports

    Feldenkrais Method Balance Classes Improve Balance in Older Adults: A Controlled Trial

    The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Feldenkrais Method balance classes on balance and mobility in older adults. This was a prospective non-randomized controlled study with pre/post measures. The setting for this study was the general community. A convenience sample of 26 community-dwelling older adults (median age 75 years) attending Feldenkrais Method balance classes formed the Intervention group. Thirty-seven volunteers were recruited for the Control group (median age 76.5 years). A series of Feldenkrais Method balance classes (the 33312Getting Grounded Gracefully33313 series), two classes per week for 10 weeks, were conducted. Main outcome measures were Activities-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) questionnaire, Four Square Step Test (FSST), self-selected gait speed (using GAITRite instrumented gait mat). At re-testing, the Intervention group showed significant improvement on all of the measures (ABC, P = .016, FSST, P = .001, gait speed, P < .001). The Control group improved significantly on one measure (FSST, P < .001). Compared to the Control group, the Intervention group made a significant improvement in their ABC score (P = .005), gait speed (P = .017) and FSST time (P = .022). These findings suggest that Feldenkrais Method balance classes may improve mobility and balance in older adults

    The National Aviation Operational Monitoring Service (NAOMS): A Documentation of the Development of a Survey Methodology

    The National Aviation Operational Monitoring Service (NAOMS) was a research project under NASA s Aviation Safety Program during the years from 2000 to 2005. The purpose of this project was to develop a methodology for gaining reliable information on changes over time in the rates-of-occurrence of safety-related events as a means of assessing the safety of the national airspace. The approach was a scientifically designed survey of the operators of the aviation system concerning their safety-related experiences. This report presents the results of the methodology developed and a demonstration of the NAOMS concept through a survey of nearly 20,000 randomly selected air-carrier pilots. Results give evidence that the NAOMS methodology can provide a statistically sound basis for evaluating trends of incidents that could compromise safety. The approach and results are summarized in the report and supporting documentation and complete analyses of results are presented in 14 appendices

    Randomized comparison of ABVD chemotherapy with a strategy that includes radiation therapy in patients with limited-stage Hodgkins lymphoma

    A B S T R A C T Purpose We report results of a randomized trial comparing ABVD (doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine) chemotherapy alone with treatment that includes radiation therapy in patients with limited-stage Hodgkin&apos;s lymphoma. Patients and Methods Patients with nonbulky clinical stage I to IIA Hodgkin&apos;s lymphoma were stratified into favorable and unfavorable risk cohorts. Patients allocated to radiation-containing therapy received subtotal nodal radiation if favorable risk or combined-modality therapy if unfavorable risk. Patients allocated to ABVD received four to six treatment cycles. Results We evaluated 399 patients. Median follow-up is 4.2 years. In comparison with ABVD alone, 5-year freedom from disease progression is superior in patients allocated to radiation therapy (P ϭ .006; 93% v 87%); no differences in event-free survival (P ϭ .06; 88% v 86%) or overall survival (P ϭ .4; 94% v 96%) were detected. In a subset analyses comparing patients stratified into the unfavorable cohort, freedom from disease progression was superior in patients allocated to combined-modality treatment (P ϭ .004; 95% v 88%); no difference in overall survival was detected (P ϭ .3; 92% v 95%). Of 15 deaths observed, nine were attributed to causes other than Hodgkin&apos;s lymphoma or acute treatment-related toxicity. Conclusion In patients with limited-stage Hodgkin&apos;s lymphoma, no difference in overall survival was detected between patients randomly assigned to receive treatment that includes radiation therapy or ABVD alone. Although 5-year freedom from disease progression was superior in patients receiving radiation therapy, this advantage is offset by deaths due to causes other than progressive Hodgkin&apos;s lymphoma or acute treatment-related toxicity
