    A prelude to 'building back better' – how well have we tackled inequalities since the last recession

    This article looks at three areas. First, we look at overall trends in a key indicator of living standards: relative poverty. Secondly, we look at the intersection between poverty and equality groups. Thirdly we look at income inequality comparisons with a wider group of countries to assess our impact against some international comparators. Facing another deep recession, and with the Scottish Government talking very prominently about wellbeing and economic renewal, what can the last ten years tell us about the probability of seeing such a change if we follow a similar approach

    In this article we develop both the a priori and a posteriori error analysis of hp–version interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for strongly monotone quasi-Newtonian fluid flows in a bounded Lipschitz domain Ω⊂Rd,d \Omega \subset R^{d}, d = 2,3. In the latter case, computable upper and lower bounds on the error are derived in terms of a natural energy norm which are explicit in the local mesh size and local polynomial degree of the approximating finite element method. A series of numerical experiments illustrate the performance of the proposed a posteriori error indicators within an automatic hp–adaptive refinement algorithm

    Responsive lanthanide complexes for metal ion sensing

    The speciation and distribution of zinc (II) within cells is not well established and the range of zinc (II) probes available are of limited use. The quest was to develop responsive lanthanide complexes to bind selectively and respond (by change in hydration state) to biologically relevant concentrations of zinc at physiological pH for possible application in MRI and luminescence. A pyridyl sulfonamide ligand with an a-CH(_2)NHSO(_2)CF(_3) substituent was found to have the desired properties for strong zinc (II) coordination. The presence of a methyl group at 6', inhibited the formation of related square planar copper (II) complexes. Pyridyl amide appended europium and gadolinium (III) complexes, based on cyclen were developed with C(_2) and (C_3) spacers separating the macrocyclic ring and the amide. The mono-aqua C(_2) complex exhibited fast water exchange, due to the steric hindrance of the seven-membered chelate between the amide carbonyl and the lanthanide centre. The increase in steric hindrance caused by the eight-ring chelate in the C(_3) analogue rendered it q = 0. A trifluoromethanesulfonamide moiety at the 6' position of the pyridine group resulted in a mono-aqua complex for the C(_2) and C(_3) appended systems. This system showed no change in hydration state on addition of Zn(^2+). The addition of a-N- carboxyalkyl groups to give a GdaD03A system resulted in the formation of q = 2 complexes which showed no zinc (II) responsive properties. However, the C(_2)- linked species exhibited a high binding affinity to HSA which resulted m a dramatic increase in the relaxivity. Eu and Gd complexes of an octadentate N(_5)O(_3) pyridyl sulfonamide containing ligand were developed as pH and pZn responsive probes. The pyridyl nitrogen bound irreversibly to the lanthanide centre, resisting protonation even in the presence of zinc and copper ions, for which the pyridyl sulfonamide group has an establiblished high affinity

    EVOLUTIONARY AND BIOGEOGRAPHIC PATTERNS OF TRILOBITES DURING THE END ORDOVICIAN MASS EXTINCTION EVENT

    The end Ordovician mass extinction event is believed to have been caused by a geologically brief, sudden onset glacial period that interrupted a period of extreme greenhouse conditions. The cause of this icehouse is a matter of contention, but recent a recent work proposes that a nearby gamma-ray burst could have affected the Earth's atmospheric chemistry and pushed the climate from a greenhouse into an unstable icehouse. Survivorship patterns of trilobites and their larval forms appear to agree with this theory. In order to further explore the Ordovician extinction, I conducted three individual paleontological studies to test macroevolutionary and biogeographic patterns of trilobites across the extinction. The first study is a phylogenic and biogeographic analysis of the family Homalonotidae Chapman 1890, the second is a similar analysis of the subfamily Deiphoninae Reed 1913, and the third is a GIS study of species ranges of the subfamily Deiphoninae

    Two-grid hp-version discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for quasi-Newtonian fluid flows

    In this article we consider the a priori and a posteriori error analysis of two-grid hp-version discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for the numerical solution of a strongly monotone quasi-Newtonian fluid flow problem. The basis of the two-grid method is to first solve the underlying nonlinear problem on a coarse finite element space; a fine grid solution is then computed based on undertaking a suitable linearization of the discrete problem. Here, we study two alternative linearization techniques: the first approach involves evaluating the nonlinear viscosity coefficient using the coarse grid solution, while the second method utilizes an incomplete Newton iteration technique. Energy norm error bounds are deduced for both approaches. Moreover, we design an hp-adaptive refinement strategy in order to automatically design the underlying coarse and fine finite element spaces. Numerical experiments are presented which demonstrate the practical performance of both two-grid discontinuous Galerkin methods

    Evolutionary Patterns of Trilobites Across the End Ordovician Mass Extinction

    The end Ordovician mass extinction is the second largest extinction event in the history or life and it is classically interpreted as being caused by a sudden and unstable icehouse during otherwise greenhouse conditions. The extinction occurred in two pulses, with a brief rise of a recovery fauna (Hirnantia fauna) between pulses. The extinction patterns of trilobites are studied in this thesis in order to better understand selectivity of the extinction event, as well to understand the effect of the extinction of the evolution of various trilobite groups. To study these patterns two phylogenetic analyses of sphaerexochines and ceraurids were generated and the overall data was combined with two older analyses of homalonotids and deiphonines from my Masters Thesis. Speciation and extinction rates were estimated in the deiphonines and sphaerexochines (two closely related cheirurid clades) to understand the different patterns of extinction and survivorship in greater detail. Then, utilizing the phylogenetic analyses, the end Ordovician is reinterpreted as a large scale analog of Vrba's Relay Model, referred to herein as the Cladal Turnover Model
