Asymmetries in Simple Feature Searches for Color

AbstractObservers were required to search for and find a target stimulus that differed from distractor stimuli only in chromaticity. Pairs of target and distractor colors were chosen so that in some conditions the two members of a pair differed in hue, in saturation, or in both hue and saturation. For each type of condition, a number of pairs of colors representing varying degrees of perceptual difference were chosen. Each member of each pair of colors served as both the target and distractor color while the other member of the pair served in the remaining role. The largest asymmetries in search times occurred when the target and distractors differed in saturation. Somewhat smaller asymmetries occurred with differences in both saturation and hue, and no asymmetries occurred with hue differences. Results suggest that the asymmetries are related to the time required to encode and transmit the chromatic information centrally rather than the properties of the search process itself. Predicting Acdemic Success among Student-Athletes

This paper examined various measures that may be useful in predicting graduation among student-athletes. Rather than simply focus on the most·commonly used measures (SAT scores and high school grade point average) four groups of variables were utilized: demographics, high school prepara-tion, university-related variables, and athletic participation fpr 105 student records at one institution. Both bivariate and multivariate measures indicated that demographic and high school preparation variables were the most beneficial in predicting success among student-athletes. Perhaps the most significant finding was that when included in the regression analysis with other high school preparation variables, SAT scores were not significantly related to graduation. The most significant variables were high school grade point average and the number of college preparatory math classes taken

Federal privacy law is all to often misconstrued or perverted to preclude the disclosure of video recordings that capture students victimized by violent crime or tortious injury. This misuse of federal law impedes transparency and accountability and, in many cases, even jeopardizes the health, safety, and lives of children. When properly construed, however, federal law is no bar to disclosure and, at least in public schools, works in tandem with freedom of information laws to ensure disclosure. This Article posits that without unequivocal guidance from federal administrative authorities, uncertainty regarding the disclosure of such recordings will continue to linger, jeopardizing the ability of plaintiffs to access needed information
