The use of mobile and handheld devices is a desirable option for implementation of user interaction with remote services from a distance. Another prominent option to operate a remote application is the use of gestures performed in the air. This paper describes the design and realization of a system to enable mobile devices and gesture recognition tools to have control on a remote movie-player application. A small qualitative user study verified the use of mobile phones, switching between three input modalities, and the opportunity of another three methods of performing gestures in the air

Synchronized Delivery of 3D Scenes with Audio and Video
International audience<p>Nowadays, 3D graphics have established their presence on the web - alongside audio and video. In fact, 3D scenes are often used in conjunction with audio and video, to create virtual worlds. However, the diverse nature of these various media components raises synchronization and packaging challenges. In order to address these challenges, we propose packaging 3D scenes, with audio and video, inside MP4 containers. This way, the 3D and other media are delivered as a whole, and on the receiving end, we are able to extract and synchronize the content, from within the browser. In this paper, we explain our methodology, present an end-to-end example scenario, and its associated implementation, using open-source tools.</p
Dynamic adaptive streaming for multi-viewpoint omnidirectional videos
International audienceFull immersion inside a Virtual Reality (VR) scene requires six Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) applications where the user is allowed to perform translational and rotational movements within the virtual space. The implementation of 6DoF applications is however still an open question. In this paper we study a multi-viewpoint (MVP) 360-degree video streaming system, where a scene is simultaneously captured by multiple omnidirectional video cameras. The user can only switch positions to predefined viewpoints (VPs). We focus on the new challenges that are introduced by adaptive MVP 360-degree video streaming. We introduce several options for video encoding with existing technologies, such as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and for the implementation of VP switching. We model three video-segment download strategies for an adaptive streaming client into Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problems: an omniscient download scheduler; one where the client proactively downloads all VPs to guarantee fast VP switch; one where the client reacts to the user's navigation pattern. We recorded a one MVP 360-degree video with three VPs, implemented a mobile MVP 360-degree video player, and recorded the viewing patterns of multiple users navigating the content. We solved the adaptive streaming optimization problems on this video considering the collected navigation traces. The results emphasize the gains obtained by using tiles in terms of objective quality of the delivered content. They also emphasize the importance of performing further study on VP switching prediction to reduce the bandwidth consumption and to measure the impact of VP switching delay on the subjective Quality of Experience (QoE)
MPEG DASH SRD : Spatial Relationship Description
This paper presents the Spatial Representation Description (SRD)feature of the second amendment of MPEG DASH standard part 1, 23009-1:2014 [1]. SRD is an approach for streaming only spatial sub-parts of a video to display devices, in combination with the form of adaptive multi-rate streaming that is intrinsically supported by MPEG DASH. The SRD feature extends the Media Presentation Description (MPD) of MPEG DASH by describing spatial relationships between associated pieces of video content. This enables the DASH client to select and retrieve only those video streams at those resolutions that are relevant to the user experience.
