Sediments of two lagoons of the «Parc Natural del Fondo d'Elx» (Alacant, Spain) where analized in order to determine the existing content of lead gunshots accumulated by hunting activity. This can cause poisoning for ingestion in a waste range of organisms, specially in birds. The Fondo is a man made wetland, were hunting has been played for many years. In recent years, many flamingo
(Phoenicopterus rubber) individuals have been
found dead by lead shot ingestion. The results evidence hight levels of lead accumulation in sediments of the Natural Park. Mean densities are 166.22 shots m2 in the East Pond and 122.57 shots m2 in the Natural Reserve. A method of spatial interpolation (Kriging) is proposed for the location of the higher lead accumulation areas in wetlands. Possible
solutions and specific corrective measures are also proposed.

This paper presents the partial results of a research project where the incidence that the multigraduate rural school has on its students was studied, within the framework of a phenomenological qualitative paradigm, resulting in a first exploratory study on the conceptions, motivations and learning strategies of the students, according to the model on learning factors (SAL). The submitted results refer to the meanings that the students infer regarding three variables related to their learning, based on the answers given in semistructured interviews and the analysis of the ideas underlying their content. With regard to the conception of learning, the results show that students play an important role in their socialization function; furthermore, the importance of classmates and the relationships between them are considered keys to a successful learning. On the other hand, in reference to learning strategies, the individualistic vision of the students is significant, considering learning as a personal and non-transferable process of each of them, which does not, then, hang together with what has been expressed previously. Concerning motivation for learning, a study-prize relationship of a superficial approach to learning predominates
Extraction and characterization of antioxidant peptides from fruit residues
Fruit residues with high protein contents are generated during the processing of some fruits. These sustainable sources of proteins are usually discarded and, in all cases, underused. In addition to proteins, these residues can also be
sources of peptides with protective effects against oxidative damage. The
revalorization of these residues, as sources of antioxidant peptides, requires the development of suitable methodologies for their extraction and the
application of analytical techniques for their characterization. The
exploitation of these residues involves two main steps: the extraction and
purification of proteins and their hydrolysis to release peptides. The extraction of proteins is mainly
carried out under alkaline conditions and, in some cases, denaturing reagents
are also employed to improve protein solubilization. Alternatively, more
sustainable strategies based on the use of high-intensity focused ultrasounds, microwaves, pressurized
liquids, electric fields, or discharges, as well as deep eutectic solvents, are
being implemented for the extraction of proteins. The scarce selectivity of these extraction methods
usually makes the subsequent purification of proteins necessary. The purification of proteins based on
their precipitation or the use of ultrafiltration has been the usual procedure, but new strategies
based on nanomaterials are also being explored. The release of potential antioxidant peptides from proteins is the next
step. Microbial fermentation and, especially, digestion with enzymes such as
Alcalase, thermolysin, or flavourzyme have been the most common. Released peptides are next
characterized by the evaluation of their antioxidant properties and the application of proteomic tools to
identify their sequences
Twentieth-Century Paleoproteomics: Lessons from Venta Micena Fossils
Proteomics methods can identify amino acid sequences in fossil proteins, thus making it
possible to determine the ascription or proximity of a fossil to other species. Before mass spectrometry
was used to study fossil proteins, earlier studies used antibodies to recognize their sequences.
Lowenstein and colleagues, at the University of San Francisco, pioneered the identification of fossil
proteins with immunological methods. His group, together with Olivares’s group at the University
of Granada, studied the immunological reactions of proteins from the controversial Orce skull
fragment (VM-0), a 1.3-million-year-old fossil found at the Venta Micena site in Orce (Granada
province, southern Spain) and initially assigned to a hominin. However, discrepancies regarding the
morphological features of the internal face of the fossil raised doubts about this ascription. In this
article, we review the immunological analysis of the proteins extracted from VM-0 and other Venta
Micena fossils assigned to hominins and to other mammals, and explain how these methods helped
to determine the species specificity of these fossils and resolve paleontological controversies.Plan Andaluz de Investigacion, Desarrollo e Innovacion, Groups CTS-564

The microbiome of xylem sap associated with almond leaf scorch disease caused by Xylella fastidiosa in South East Spain
Xylella fastidiosa (XF) is one of the most harmful emerging plant pathogenic bacteria and represents an important threat to agriculture, forestry and landscape worldwide. In June of 2017 XF was reported in almond trees in the province of Alicante, Spain. Metagenomics is a valuable methodology to study the impact of causal agents of plant diseases and their interaction with others naturally occurring microorganism, as part of innovative approaches to mitigate or control the disease. Moreover, endophytic bacteria seem to be a promising biocontrol solution. The objective of the study was to compare healthy and diseased almonds trees infected by XF subsp. multiplex to identify groups of microorganisms that could potentially modulate the almond leaf scorch disease. Almond plots were selected in five municipalities within the demarcated area of XF outbreak. A total of 93 trees were selected and characterized as positive (52) and negative (41) for the presence of XF using official EPPO standard qPCR protocols. The bacterial microbiota was determined from DNA extracted from xylem samples of wood chips based on the V5-V6 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene using Illumina’s MiSeq sequencing. There was a clear concordance between qPCR results and identification of XF reads in the samples. Within the diseased plants, the relative abundance of XF varied from 0.34% to 92% of total bacterial reads. In total, 152 OTUs were assigned to 11 phyla, 53 families and 86 genera. A core microbiome of 77 OTUs common to healthy (qPCR negative) and diseased (qPCR positive) almond trees was determined were 5 genera accounted for most of the diversity. Disruption in the frequencies of these OTUs occurred on the diseased tree since those predominant genera were less abundant due to the emergence of Xylella. Furthermore, 32 and 38 OTUs were unique to healthy or diseased trees, respectively. Our results allow to better understand the interaction between XF and the xylem sap microbiome identifying potential bacteria that could act through direct inhibition or through niche displacement of XF envisioning innovative strategies to control the almond leaf scorch disease.Study supported by Project 727987 XF ACTORS(EU-H2020) and COST Action CA16107 EuroXanth

Resolvin E1 attenuates doxorubicin-induced cardiac fibroblast senescence: A key role for IL-1β
Cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) undergo senescence in reaction to different stressors, leading to a poor prognosis of cardiac disease. Doxorubicin (Doxo) is an antineoplastic drug with strong cardiotoxic effects, which induces IL-1β secretion and thus, triggers a potent pro-inflammatory response. Doxo induces CFs senescence; however, the mechanisms are not fully understood. Different pharmacological strategies have been used to eliminate senescent cells by inducing their apoptosis or modifying their secretome. However, Resolvin E1 (RvE1), a lipid derivative resolutive mediator with potent anti-inflammatory effects has not been used before to prevent CFs senescence. CFs were isolated from adult male C57BL/6J mice and subsequently stimulated with Doxo, in the presence or absence of RvE1. Senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity (SA-β-gal), γ-H2A.X, p53, p21, and senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) were evaluated. The involvement of the NLRP3 inflammasome/interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R) signaling pathway on CFs senescence was studied using an NLRP3 inhibitor (MCC950) and an endogenous IL-1R antagonist (IR1A). Doxo is able to trigger CFs senescence, as evidenced by an increase of γ-H2A.X, p53, p21, and SA-β-gal, and changes in the SASP profile. These Doxo effects were prevented by RvE1. Doxo triggers IL-1β secretion, which was dependent on NLRP3 activation. Doxo-induced CFs senescence was partially blocked by MCC950 and IR1A. In addition, IL-1β also triggered CFs senescence, as evidenced by the increase of γ-H2A.X, p53, p21, SA-β-gal activity, and SASP. All these effects were also prevented by RvE1 treatment. Conclusion: These data show the anti-senescent role of RvE1 in Doxo-induced CFs senescence, which could be mediated by reducing IL-1β secretion. This study was supported by PID2020-115590RB-100/AEI/

Increased infections by herpes simplex virus type 1 and polymicrobials of the genital tract, in the general population of a Spanish middle city
Introduction. Infections by genitopathogens are a frequent
reason for consultation in Primary Health Care and in
the specialties of Infectious Diseases, Urology, Gynecology,
and Dermatology. The most common causes are opportunistic
microorganisms and responsible for sexually transmitted
infections associated with unprotected sex. The objective is
to determine the microorganisms that cause these infections
in patients treated at the Hospital Universitario Virgen de las
Nieves in Granada and Neisseria gonorrhoeae susceptibility to
antibiotics.
Material and methods. A transversal-descriptive and retrospective
study was carried out, which included the results
issued, between January 2018 and December 2019, in the
Microbiology Laboratory from all the episodes studied using
standardized working procedures.
Results. The most frequently detected microorganisms
were Gardnerella vaginalis (23.81%) followed by Candida spp.
(20.9%), especially in females, and N. gonorrhoeae (11.36%)
and Ureaplasma urealyticum (11.99%), in males. Many times,
they were presented in combination. Regarding herpes simplex
viruses, infection by both species had a similar prevalence (50%) in males, while type 1 was more prevalent (76.52%) in
females. The most active antibiotics against N. gonorrhoeae
were cefotaxime (98%) and cefixime (100%). Tetracycline
(39.02%) a poorly active antibiotic.
Conclusions. The most frequent pathogens corresponded
to those that usually caused infections in females, although N.
gonorrhoeae was the most frequent in males and mixed infections
are not an accidental finding. HSV-1 infections were
more frequent than HSV-2, confirming the trend of a change
in the epidemiology of genital herpes
