Signifiant et significatif. Réflexions épistémologiques sur la sémiotique et l’analyse des données

L’article porte sur l’analyse de données en sciences humaines et sociales, en particulier selon une perspective sémiotique. Nous montrerons les affinités épistémologiques entre méthodes numériques et analyse sémiotique immanente. Ensuite, nous défendrons l’idée selon laquelle la discussion actuelle sur les limites des méthodes numériques reprend certaines des critiques qui ont suscité la constitution d’une approche pragmatique en sémiotique : l’analyse ne peut être détachée de l’interprétation. Cela peut conduire à formuler des méthodes quali-quantitatives d’enquête, qui sont plus qu’une juxtaposition de méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives traditionnelles. En effet, il s’agit d’identifier des procédures pour la transformation des expressions, capables de retrouver leur sens et leur dimension sociale sans aller au-delà des données. À cette fin, il est nécessaire de dépasser l’opposition entre qualitatif et quantitatif en couplant compétences statistiques et sémiotiques.This paper is about data analysis in the human and social sciences, especially from a semiotic perspective. We begin by highlighting some epistemological resemblances between digital methods and immanent semiotic analysis. Then we recall the semiotic discussion about immanent and pragmatic approaches to meaning. We argue that the recognition of a pragmatic component in data analysis can bring about the constitution of a quali-quantitative approach to human and social data. The challenge is to find some procedures for transforming expressions, capable of giving access to their semantic dimension. To this end, statistical and semiotic competences have to be joined together

Les jeux et spécialement les jeux vidéo nous permettent de vivre une expérience impossible à réaliser autrement : celle du choix. Afin de comprendre la portée de cette considération, nous comparerons le modèle de l’action développé par E. Anscombe à celui de l’action racontée développé par A. J. Greimas, en montrant leur incompatibilité et leur insuffisance face aux actions interactives des jeux vidéo. Nous introduirons alors deux pensées capables d’enrichir notre compréhension. D’abord, celle d’A. Schopenhauer, que nous mobilisons pour décrire la nature hybride de l’avatar, à la foi personnage fictif et véhicule de la volonté réelle du joueur. Ensuite, la pensée d’U. Eco qui, à travers le concept d’ouverture, va permettre de caractériser l’expérience de liberté et de responsabilité associée à l’action interactive.Games and especially video games allow us to live an experience that is impossible to live otherwise: the experience of choosing. In order to understand the consequences of such consideration we begin by comparing the model of action developed by E. Anscombe to the model of narrative action developed by A. J. Greimas. We show the incompatibility of these two models and their incapacity to account for interactive actions in video games. We then introduce two other perspectives capable of enriching our understanding. First, that of A. Schopenhauer, with whom we describe the hybrid nature of the avatar, at the same time fictional character and vehicle for the player’s real will. Second, we recall U. Eco’s concept of openness to characterize the experience of freedom and responsibility associated with interactive action

Dynamic failure rate model of an electric motor comparing the Military Standard and Svenska Kullagerfabriken (SKF) methods

Abstract Electric motors are industrial systems' components widely diffused enabling all productive processes and safety equipment. They are affected by aging effect with a contribution based on the environmental condition on which they work. In order to design efficient maintenance plans, the behaviour of their main components, such as bearings and winding, has to be predicted. Therefore, a model-based methodology is applied aiming at codifying the failure rate of an electric engine, taking into account the thermal aging and relevant environment boundary conditions in which bearings and winding operate. The winding failure mode is coded by means of the Military standard technique while the bearings one is simulated comparing the Military Standard and the Svenska Kullagerfabriken (SKF) techniques. While the former predicts more conservative behaviours, the latter, taking into account lubrication conditions, dynamic loads and a better knowledge of materials quality, enables to capture the evolution of the operative conditions. The proposed reliability model can capture both the deterministic and stochastic behaviour of the electric motor: it belongs to the field of hybrid automaton application; the model is coded by means of the emerging software framework called SHYFTOO. The proposed model and the Monte Carlo simulation process that performs its evolution can support the development of a new class of electric motors: a cyber-physical oriented electric motor

Theories of Authorship and Intention in the Twentieth Century. An Overview

This article discusses some of the most important theories about authorship and the author’s intentions developed during the last century. It argues that initially Husserl, Croce and the New Criticism firmly divided private intentions on the one side and verbal meanings (constituting an ideal subject) on the other. Then, it introduces Derrida and Barthes who suggested a radical change in perspective by confuting the existence of an ideal conscious subject, of ideal meanings and of private intentions. Subsequently, Booth and Foucault looked for a surrogate of the author and found it in a discursive instance showing the reader a path to the author’s intentions. Lastly, Anscombe and Eco formulated a new concept of public and open intention completely redefining the whole issue. This article, in conclusion, suggests that, in spite of all statements about the ‘death of the author’, it is precisely thanks to the twentieth-century debate that the author was born
