On some differential-geometric aspects of the Torelli map

In this note we survey recent results on the extrinsic geometry of the Jacobian locus inside Ag\mathsf{A}_g. We describe the second fundamental form of the Torelli map as a multiplication map, recall the relation between totally geodesic subvarieties and Hodge loci and survey various results related to totally geodesic subvarieties and the Jacobian locus.Comment: To appear on Boll. Shimura varieties in the Torelli locus via Galois coverings of elliptic curves

We study Shimura subvarieties of Ag\mathsf{A}_g obtained from families of Galois coverings f:CCf: C \rightarrow C' where CC' is a smooth complex projective curve of genus g1g' \geq 1 and g=g(C)g= g(C). We give the complete list of all such families that satisfy a simple sufficient condition that ensures that the closure of the image of the family via the Torelli map yields a Shimura subvariety of Ag\mathsf{A}_g for g=1,2g' =1,2 and for all g2,4g \geq 2,4 and for g>2g' > 2 and g9g \leq 9. In a previous work of the first and second author together with A. Ghigi [FGP] similar computations were done in the case g=0g'=0. Here we find 6 families of Galois coverings, all with g=1g' = 1 and g=2,3,4g=2,3,4 and we show that these are the only families with g=1g'=1 satisfying this sufficient condition. We show that among these examples two families yield new Shimura subvarieties of Ag\mathsf{A}_g, while the other examples arise from certain Shimura subvarieties of Ag\mathsf{A}_g already obtained as families of Galois coverings of P1\mathbb{P}^1 in [FGP]. Finally we prove that if a family satisfies this sufficient condition with g1g'\geq 1, then g6g+1g \leq 6g'+1.Comment: 18 pages, to appear in Geometriae Dedicat

Interplay between bending and stretching in carbon nanoribbons

We investigate the bending properties of carbon nanoribbons by combining continuum elasticity theory and tight-binding atomistic simulations. First, we develop a complete analysis of a given bended configuration through continuum mechanics. Then, we provide by tight-binding calculations the value of the bending rigidity in good agreement with recent literature. We discuss the emergence of a stretching field induced by the full atomic-scale relaxation of the nanoribbon architecture. We further prove that such an in-plane strain field can be decomposed into a first contribution due to the actual bending of the sheet and a second one due to edge effects.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

On the dimension of Voisin sets in the moduli space of abelian varieties

We study the subsets Vk(A)V_k(A) of a complex abelian variety AA consisting in the collection of points xAx\in A such that the zero-cycle {x}{0A}\{x\}-\{0_A\} is kk-nilpotent with respect to the Pontryagin product in the Chow group. These sets were introduced recently by Voisin and she showed that dimVk(A)k1\dim V_k(A) \leq k-1 and Vk(A)V_k(A) is countable for a very general abelian variety of dimension at least 2k12k-1. We study in particular the locus Vg,2\mathcal V_{g,2} in the moduli space of abelian varieties of dimension gg with a fixed polarization, where V2(A)V_2(A) is positive dimensional. We prove that an irreducible subvariety YVg,2\mathcal Y \subset \mathcal V_{g,2}, g3g\ge 3, such that for a very general yYy \in \mathcal Y there is a curve in V2(Ay)V_2(A_y) generating AA satisfies dimY2g1.\dim \mathcal Y \le 2g - 1. The hyperelliptic locus shows that this bound is sharp.Comment: Final version to appear in Mathematische Annale

ABSTRACTObjective: The aim of this study was to assess the mean of histamine concentration in food poisoning.Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of reports published between 1959 and 2013.Study selection: Main criteria for inclusion of studies were: all report types that present outbreaks of "histamine poisoning' or "scombroid syndrome" from food, including histamine content and type of food. Health status of people involved must be nonpathological. Results: Fifty-five (55) reports were included, these studies reported 103 incidents. All pooled analyses were based on random effect model; histamine mean concentration in poisoning samples was 1107.21 mg/kg with confidence interval for the meta-mean of 422.62–2900.78 mg/kg; heterogeneity index (I2) was 100% (P < 0.0001); prediction interval was 24.12–50822.78 mg/kg. Fish involved in histamine poisoning was mainly tuna or Istiophoridae species. No clues of association between concomitant conditions (female sex, alcohol consumption, previous medication,..
