Etología. Introducción a la ciencia del comportamiento

Get PDF
The purpose of this book is to provide an introduction to Ethology. This science responds to the interest in deepening the knowledge of animal customs; to understand the variety of behaviour that in different situations exhibit individuals of different species. A possible definition of ethology could be: the scientific study of the behavior of living beings. Throughout this book all aspects related to animal behavior, from the causes and mechanisms of action or adaptation and evolution and animal welfare, are analyzed

Catalytic valorization of glycerol in the absence of external hydrogen: Effect of the Cu/ZrO2 catalyst mass and solvent

The glycerol valorization by heterogeneous catalysis to produce high-value-added chemicals is mainly carried out in the presence of high pressures of molecular hydrogen, a highly flammable gas whose main production in our days depends on fossil fuels. Therefore, an attractive alternative to explore is hydrogen in-situ generation in the catalytic process. Herein, we investigated the liquid-phase catalytic valorization of 80% wt. glycerol in different solvents such as water, 2-propanol, and acetone using a Cu/ZrO2 catalyst in the absence of external hydrogen. Firstly, the mass effect of the Cu/ZrO2 in the glycerol aqueous medium was evaluated finding an optimum mass of 250 mg for glycerol conversion. At these conditions, an initial reaction rate value of 2.63 × 10−3 molgly·gcat−1·min−1 was observed while the main products were hydroxyacetone (HA) and 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). The use of 2-propanol as solvent and hydrogen donor molecule in the glycerol conversion induced the hydrogenation of hydroxyacetone towards 1,2-PDO. The ratio between the selectivity of 1,2-PDO/HA was found to be higher than that observed for the catalytic experiment with water. For the conversion of glycerol in the presence of acetone as a solvent it was noted the occurrence of acetalization reaction of glycerol with acetone and the main product observed was 4-hydroxymethyl-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxalane or solketal. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were included to gain insight into the reaction mechanisms of the hydroxyacetone hydrogenation to the formation of 1,2-PDO on Cu/ZrO2 catalyst. Four possible pathways were considered. The elementary steps include several intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer steps and two hydrogen addition steps. The hydrogen sources would come from adsorbed hydroxyl species of the aqueous reaction medium on ZrO2 support. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.RJC, JCZ, JG, and GG gratefully acknowledge the financial support from the Chilean National Fund for Science and Technology, Fondecyt N◦ 1180243 and N◦1220355. Venezuela's humanitarian crisis, resurgence of vector-borne diseases, and implications for spillover in the region.

In the past 5-10 years, Venezuela has faced a severe economic crisis, precipitated by political instability and declining oil revenue. Public health provision has been affected particularly. In this Review, we assess the impact of Venezuela's health-care crisis on vector-borne diseases, and the spillover into neighbouring countries. Between 2000 and 2015, Venezuela witnessed a 359% increase in malaria cases, followed by a 71% increase in 2017 (411 586 cases) compared with 2016 (240 613). Neighbouring countries, such as Brazil, have reported an escalating trend of imported malaria cases from Venezuela, from 1538 in 2014 to 3129 in 2017. In Venezuela, active Chagas disease transmission has been reported, with seroprevalence in children (<10 years), estimated to be as high as 12·5% in one community tested (n=64). Dengue incidence increased by more than four times between 1990 and 2016. The estimated incidence of chikungunya during its epidemic peak is 6975 cases per 100 000 people and that of Zika virus is 2057 cases per 100 000 people. The re-emergence of many vector-borne diseases represents a public health crisis in Venezuela and has the possibility of severely undermining regional disease elimination efforts. National, regional, and global authorities must take action to address these worsening epidemics and prevent their expansion beyond Venezuelan borders

A Concise Representation for Detailed Sentiment Analysis

No full text
Abstract. This paper presents initial results in sentiment analysis classification, as an attempt to go beyond categorizing texts only by 'positive' or 'negative' orientation, using fine-grained features for this purpose. We present a method for sentiment classification based on a concise representation built from analyzing appraisal groups such as "very good" or "not terrible". An appraisal group is represented as a set of attribute values anteceding an appraisal word (adjective). An appraisal lexicon is used to identify adjectives guiding the analysis. We performed experiments classifying movie reviews in Spanish using features based upon attitude taxonomy information, and report improvements on precision with eight dimensional vectors and a support vector machine algorithm

Understanding child, family, environmental and agency risk factors: findings from an analysis of significant case reviews in Scotland

This paper presents the findings from an analysis of 56 significant case reviews (SCRs) in Scotland. In contrast to England and Wales where national analyses have been undertaken for many years, until this study was undertaken, the findings from SCRs had not previously been collated nationally. The paper discusses child, parent, environmental and agency factors that were identified in the SCRs and, whilst noting that the pathways to death or harm will be unique in individual cases, tries to further our understanding of the ways in which these different factors may interact to result in death or harm. A significant finding was the high number of SCRs that relate to the care and protection of children living in families whose lives are dominated by drug use and the associated issues this brings, including criminality and neighbourhood problems. Another challenging finding was the lack of suitable resources for the placement and support of troubled teenagers. Finally, a number of SCRs involved long-term neglect and/or sexual abuse of school or nursery age children who had been known to statutory services for many years
