    Moving Full STEAM Ahead

    Get PDF
How do you move a traditional elementary school to a hands-on, interactive, STEAM focused school? At Hampton Elementary Charter, we offer our students a variety of STEAM Stations each day to build career awareness in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. This presentation will cover the successes, scheduling, surveys, decisions, and challenges of moving a school and doing what\u27s right for students. The primary audience is elementary and middle school teachers and administrators. Participants will be given the opportunity to share ideas, plans, questions, struggles, and opportunities for STEM and STEAM programs

Mrub_3015 is orthologous to the b2757 gene found in \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e coding for casD

This project is part of the Meiothermus ruber genome analysis project, which uses a collection of online bioinformatics tools to predict gene function. We investigated the biological function of the gene Mrub_3015, which we hypothesize is a component of the CRISPR-Cas prokaryotic defense system. We predict that Mrub_3015 (DNA coordinates 3055550...3056245) encodes the the CRISPR-associated protein cas5, which is integral in maintaining the crRNA-DNA structure, keeping the complex from base pairing with the target phage DNA. Our hypothesis is supported by identical hits for Mrub_3015 and b2527 to the KEGG, Pfam, TIGRfam, CDD and PDB databases as well as a low E-value for a pairwise NCBI BLAST comparison. Both protein products are predicted to be localized in the cytoplasm. Finally, both proteins share numerous highly conserved amino acids, when compared to the consensus sequence of Pfam domains PF09704, PF18019, and PF00270

The adoption of mobile technology as a tool for situational crime prevention in Kenya

Conference paper presented at IST-Africa 2014 conference- MauritiusThe adoption of mobile technology in crime prevention has substantially grown across the world. However, this is not the case in Kenya, because the public still have to go from one police station to another to report crimes and to receive general services from the police. The crime records are usually recorded manually in police Occurrence Book (OB) and therefore determining the accurate crime trends and rates of reported crimes has proved to be a major hurdle in crime prevention for the Kenya police. This study aimed at developing a mobile application that would aid the Kenyan public to report crimes to the nearest police station, receive alerts on new crime spot areas, query information about arrested individuals and encourage community policing. The study also involved the development of a back-end web-based prototype that incorporated a digitised OB and a criminal database. The mobile Android application was tested on various devices and the test results ascertained. The study revealed that most users would use the mobile-police application because of convenience, reduced fear of victimization and ease of use.The adoption of mobile technology in crime prevention has substantially grown across the world. This monograph examines Office Number 39’s origins, organizational structure, and activities in order to develop a more calibrated strategy and policy to meet the North Korean challenge. This monograph focuses on Office Number 39\u27s key illicit activities— to include manufacture and distribution of illegal drugs, the counterfeiting of U.S. currency, and the manufacture and distribution of counterfeit cigarettes. Finally, as Kim Jong-Il grows frailer, assessing how his successor may continue or alter Office Number 39’s activities is also examined.https://press.armywarcollege.edu/monographs/1348/thumbnail.jp

Out of the Shadows: A Young Woman\u27s Journey from Hiding to Celebrating her Identity

In April 2019 the UK government reported that little progress had been made to remedy social outcomes inequality between Roma and the wider population, recommending further recognition of Roma, for example in census data, to enable identification of Roma, their needs, and how to meet those needs. In this article we present an account of one Roma woman’s journey from hiding her identity to celebrating it. We expose five critical incidents that challenge and mould her sense of identity and career aspiration, with insights into her hopes and dreams as she reflects upon the barriers she faces and attempts to overcome. The narrative enhances understanding of the intersection of experience and ethnic identity formation, Marcella’s (pseudonym) case study emerges verbatim through quotes; we do not alter or correct her English. In our exploration, we follow the six classical steps recommended in case study analysis (Yin, 2009) and ground some of the key analytical concepts in Goffman’s theories of stigma (1963) and theatrical performances in everyday life. We conclude by identifying key parallels in her experience, relevant regardless of socioeconomic status to further debate on the nature of internalised shame, stigma, and class
