    A New Look at Azimuthal Wave Propagation Constants of an n-Layered Dielectric Coated PEC Cylinder

    A method for determining the azimuthal wave propagation constants supported by an n-layered dielectric coated PEC cylinder is presented. The method, based on a Green\u27s function described in , is designed to optimally handle layered cylinders where the number of layers is extremely large as might be encountered in structures designed using transformational optics. The method is also tractable for any stratification profile without the need for individual layer analysis. We implement a recently developed numerical method to calculate Bessel functions of complex order and argument. Our method is verified by comparison with previously published results. We also present new results for a 5-layer case demonstrating self consistency and improved accuracy over published methods. Finally, to illustrate the method\u27s benefits, we present a brief analysis of two multilayer structures; a multilayer variation of the coated cylinder presented in and an example of a 7-layer case that approximates a material parameter gradient

    An Efficient Cost Function for the Optimization of an \u3cem\u3en\u3c/em\u3e-Layered Isotropic Cloaked Cylinder

    In this paper, we present an efficient cost function for optimizing n-layered isotropic cloaked cylinders. Cost function efficiency is achieved by extracting the expression for the angle independent scatterer contribution of an associated Green\u27s function. Therefore, since this cost function is not a function of angle, accounting for every bistatic angle is not necessary and thus more efficient than other cost functions. With this general and efficient cost function, isotropic cloaked cylinders can be optimized for many layers and material parameters. To demonstrate this, optimized cloaked cylinders made of 10, 20 and 30 equal thickness layers are presented for TE and TM incidence. Furthermore, we study the effect layer thickness has on optimized cloaks by optimizing a 10 layer cloaked cylinder over the material parameters and individual layer thicknesses. The optimized material parameters in this effort do not exhibit the dual nature that is evident in the ideal transformation optics design. This indicates that the inevitable field penetration and subsequent PEC boundary condition at the cylinder must be taken into account for an optimal cloaked cylinder design. Furthermore, a more effective cloaked cylinder can be designed by optimizing both layer thickness and material parameters than by additional layers alone

    Lipofuscin Accumulation in Cultured Non-Dividing Cells as a Function of Time and Oxygen Tension

    Cultivated human glial cells, kept in a state of density-dependent inhibition of growth, accumulate age-pigment (lipofucsin) within their lysosomal vacuomes with the same characteristics as the corresponding pigment observed in vivo. The rate of formation and accumulation of lipofuscin is greatly accelerated under the conditions of routine cell cultivation in comparison to the in vivo event. Lipofuscin is generally considered to be composed of polymerized products of lipid peroxidation and thus it would be reasonable to suggest that factors which influence lipid peroxidation would also alter the rate of lipofuscin formation. Human glial cells were grown in the presence of various oxygen concentrations in the gas-phase (5%, 10%, 20%, 40%). This was found to modulate (accelerate or decrease) the rate of lipofuscin formation. The present study thus provides: (1) important supportive evidence for the lipid peroxidation origin of lipofuscin, (2) a useful model system for studying the effect of lipofuscin accumulation on lysosomal function and cell growth kinetics, (3) evidence that our standard culture conditions are far from ideal since oxygen concentration may drastically alter rates of lipofuscin formation and accumulation. Cell culture technique, as we know it today, may benefit from more closely controlled oxygen tensions, i.e., by reducing oxygen to levels that more closely approximate conditions in vivo

    To outline further genetic mechanisms of transformation from follicular lymphoma (FL) to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), we have performed whole genome array-CGH in 81 tumors from 60 patients [29 de novo DLBCL (dnDLBCL), 31 transformed DLBCL (tDLBCL), and 21 antecedent FL]. In 15 patients, paired tumor samples (primary FL and a subsequent tDLBCL) were available, among which three possessed more than two subsequent tumors, allowing us to follow specific genetic alterations acquired before, during, and after the transformation. Gain of 2p15-16.1 encompassing, among others, the REL, BCL11A, USP34, COMMD1, and OTX1 genes was found to be more common in the tDLBCL compared with dnDLBCL (P < 0.001). Furthermore, a high-level amplification of 2p15-16.1 was also detected in the FL stage prior to transformation, indicating its importance during the transformation event. Quantitative real-time PCR showed a higher level of amplification of REL, USP34, and COMMD1 (all involved in the NF kappa B-pathway) compared with BCL11A, which indicates that the altered genes disrupting the NF kappa B pathway may be the driver genes of transformation rather than the previously suggested BCL11A. Moreover, a 17q21.33 amplification was exclusively found in tDLBCL, never in FL (P < 0.04) or dnDLBCL, indicating an upregulation of genes of importance during the later phase of transformation. Taken together, our study demonstrates potential genomic markers for disease progression to clinically more aggressive forms. We also confirm the importance of the TP53-, CDKN2A-, and NF kappa B-pathways for the transformation from FL to DLBCL

    The Utility of Repeat Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration for Suspected Pancreatic Cancer

    Background. The utility of repeat EUS in patients with suspicion for pancreatic cancer after non-diagnostic EUS-FNA study is not well established. Aim. Determine the accuracy of repeat EUS-FNA in patients with suspected pancreatic cancer and prior non-diagnostic EUS-FNA. Methods. Retrospective cohort study. Results. From 2002 to 2008 in our institution 28 patients underwent repeat EUS-FNA for suspected pancreatic cancer. Initial EUS showed a pancreatic mass in 24 (85.71%), no mass in 3 (10.71%) and possible mass in 1 (3.58%). FNA was performed and was negative for malignancy in all patients. Repeat EUS showed pancreatic mass in 27 patients (96.42%) and no mass in 1 (3.58%). FNA was performed in all patients and cytology was positive for malignancy in 6 (21.43%). Out of the 28 patients, 17 (60.71%) were eventually confirmed to have cancer. Overall repeat EUS-FNA correctly determined the true final status in 17 out of 28 patients providing sensitivity for the diagnosis of cancer of 35% (95% CI 14%–62%), specificity 100% (95% CI 72%–100%), and overall accuracy of 61%, (95% CI 28%–72%). Conclusion. Repeat EUS-FNA provides reasonable accuracy and may be worthwhile in patients with suspected pancreatic cancer who had had prior negative EUS-FNA

    Bounce behaviour in Kantowski-Sachs and Bianchi Cosmologies

    Many cosmological scenarios envisage either a bounce of the universe at early times, or collapse of matter locally to form a black hole which re-expands into a new expanding universe region. Energy conditions preclude this happening for ordinary matter in general relativistic universes, but scalar or dilatonic fields can violate some of these conditions, and so could possibly provide bounce behaviour. In this paper we show that such bounces cannot occur in Kantowski-Sachs models without violating the {\it reality condition} ϕ˙20\dot{\phi}^2\geq 0. This also holds true for other isotropic spatially homogenous Bianchi models, with the exception of closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker and Bianchi IX models; bounce behaviour violates the {\em weak energy condition} ρ0\rho\geq 0 and ρ+p0\rho+p\geq 0. We turn to the Randall-Sundrum type braneworld scenario for a possible resolution of this problem.Comment: Matches published versio

    An X-ray Selected Galaxy Cluster at z=1.26

    We report the discovery of an X-ray luminous galaxy cluster at z=1.26. RXJ0848.9+4452 was selected as an X-ray cluster candidate in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey, on the basis of its spatial extent. Deep optical and near-IR imaging have revealed a galaxy overdensity around the peak of the X-ray emission, with a significant excess of red objects with J-K colors typical of elliptical galaxies at z>1. Spectroscopic observations at the Keck II telescope have secured 6 galaxy redshifts in the range 1.257=1.261), within a 35 arcsec radius around the peak X-ray emission. This system lies only 4.2 arcmin away (5.0 h^{-1}_{50} comoving Mpc, q_0=0.5) from the galaxy cluster ClG J0848+4453, which was identified by Stanford et al. (1997) at z=1.273 in a near-IR field galaxy survey, and is also known to be X-ray luminous. Assuming that the X-ray emission is entirely due to hot intra-cluster gas, both these systems have similar rest frame luminosities L_x ~=1x10^{44} ergs/s (0.5-2.0 keV band).     Prosthetic stent graft infection after endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair

    ObjectiveThe purpose of this report is to discuss the incidence, diagnosis, and management of stent graft infections after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR).MethodsData were collected from the hospital database and medical case notes for all patients with infected endografts after elective or emergency EVAR for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) during the last 8 years in two university teaching hospitals in Northern Ireland. The data included the patient’s age, gender, presentation of sepsis, treatment offered, and the ultimate outcome. The diagnosis of graft-related sepsis was established by a combination of investigations including inflammatory markers, labelled white cell scan, computed tomography (CT) scan, microbiology cultures, and postmortem examination.ResultsGraft-related septic complications occurred in six of 509 patients, including 433 elective repairs and 76 emergency endografts for ruptured AAA. Two patients presented with left psoas abscess and were treated successfully with extra-anatomic bypass and removal of the infected stent graft. Two more patients presented with infected graft without other evidence of intra-abdominal sepsis: one underwent successful removal of the infected prosthesis with extra-anatomical bypass, and the other was treated conservatively and died of progressively worsening sepsis. The fifth patient presented with unexplained fever and died suddenly, with a postmortem diagnosis of aortoenteric fistula and ruptured aneurysm. The last patient presented with an aortoenteric fistula, was treated conservatively in view of concurrent myelodysplasia, and died of possible aneurysm rupture.ConclusionThis report emphasizes the need for continued awareness of potential graft-related septic complications in patients undergoing EVAR of AAA. Attention to detail with regard to sterility and antibiotic prophylaxis during stent grafting and during any secondary interventions is vital in reducing the risk of infection. In addition, early recognition and prompt treatment are essential for a successful outcome

    Isomerization dynamics of a buckled nanobeam

    We analyze the dynamics of a model of a nanobeam under compression. The model is a two mode truncation of the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation subject to compressive stress. We consider parameter regimes where the first mode is unstable and the second mode can be either stable or unstable, and the remaining modes (neglected) are always stable. Material parameters used correspond to silicon. The two mode model Hamiltonian is the sum of a (diagonal) kinetic energy term and a potential energy term. The form of the potential energy function suggests an analogy with isomerisation reactions in chemistry. We therefore study the dynamics of the buckled beam using the conceptual framework established for the theory of isomerisation reactions. When the second mode is stable the potential energy surface has an index one saddle and when the second mode is unstable the potential energy surface has an index two saddle and two index one saddles. Symmetry of the system allows us to construct a phase space dividing surface between the two "isomers" (buckled states). The energy range is sufficiently wide that we can treat the effects of the index one and index two saddles in a unified fashion. We have computed reactive fluxes, mean gap times and reactant phase space volumes for three stress values at several different energies. In all cases the phase space volume swept out by isomerizing trajectories is considerably less than the reactant density of states, proving that the dynamics is highly nonergodic. The associated gap time distributions consist of one or more `pulses' of trajectories. Computation of the reactive flux correlation function shows no sign of a plateau region; rather, the flux exhibits oscillatory decay, indicating that, for the 2-mode model in the physical regime considered, a rate constant for isomerization does not exist.Comment: 42 pages, 6 figure

    The procoagulant activity of tissue factor expressed on fibroblasts is increased by tissue factor-negative extracellular vesicles

    Tissue factor (TF) is critical for the activation of blood coagulation. TF function is regulated by the amount of externalised phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) on the surface of the cell in which it is expressed. We investigated the role PS and PE in fibroblast TF function. Fibroblasts expressed 6–9 x 104 TF molecules/cell but had low specific activity for FXa generation. We confirmed that this was associated with minimal externalized PS and PE and characterised for the first time the molecular species of PS/PE demonstrating that these differed from those found in platelets. Mechanical damage of fibroblasts, used to simulate vascular injury, increased externalized PS/PE and led to a 7-fold increase in FXa generation that was inhibited by annexin V and an anti-TF antibody. Platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs), that did not express TF, supported minimal FVIIa-dependent FXa generation but substantially increased fibroblast TF activity. This enhancement in fibroblast TF activity could also be achieved using synthetic liposomes comprising 10% PS without TF. In conclusion, despite high levels of surface TF expression, healthy fibroblasts express low levels of external-facing PS and PE limiting their ability to generate FXa. Addition of platelet-derived TF-negative EVs or artificial liposomes enhanced fibroblast TF activity in a PS dependent manner.
