Risk factors for positive tuberculin skin tests among migrant and resident children in Lausanne, Switzerland

Cadre : Policlinique pédiatrique à Lausanne en Suisse, pays rencontrant une proportion importante de tuberculose au sein de la population de migrants.
But : Déterminer les facteurs de risque associés à un test tuberculinique positif (ou test de Mantoux), notamment l'influence du BCG (Bacille Calmette Guérin) et d'un contact avec un personne ayant une tuberculose active. Les patients concernés étaient des enfants examinés dans le cadre d'un contrôle de santé ou dans le cadre d'une étude d'entourage d'un cas déclaré de tuberculose.
Méthode : Etude descriptive comprenant des enfants ayant eu un test tuberculinique (2 unités RT23) entre novembre 2002 et avril 2004. L'âge, le sexe, l'anamnèse de contact avec une personne ayant une tuberculose active, la vaccination par le BCG, le pays d'origine et le lieu de naissance (en Suisse ou hors de la Suisse) étaient répertoriés.
Résultats : Parmi les 234 enfants de l'étude, 176 (75%) avaient une réaction tuberculinique égal à zéro et 31 (13%) avaient une réaction positive (> 10mm). Dans le modèle de régression linéaire, la taille de la réaction tuberculinique variait significativement selon l'anamnèse de contact avec une personne ayant une tuberculose active, l'âge, l'incidence de la tuberculose dans le pays d'origine et la vaccination par le BCG. Le sexe ou le lieu de naissance n'influençait pas la taille de la réaction.
Dans le modèle de régression logistique incluant toutes les valeurs répertoriées, les paramètres significativement associés avec un Mantoux positif étaient l'âge (Odds Ratio = 1.21, 95% CI 1.08 ; 1.35), l'anamnèse de contact avec une personne ayant une tuberculose active (OR = 7.31, 95% CI 2.23 ; 24) et l'incidence de la tuberculose dans le pays d'origine (OR = 1.01, 95% CI 1.00 ; 1.02). Le sexe (OR = 1.18, 95% CI 0.50 ; 2.78) et la vaçcination par le BCG (OR = 2.97, 95% CI 0.91 ; 9.72) n'étaient pas associés avec une réaction tuberculinique positive.
Conclusions : L'incidence de la tuberculose dans le pays d'origine, la vaccination par le BCG et l'âge influencent le test de Mantoux (taille ou proportion de réaction > 10mm). Toutefois, le facteur de risque le plus important d'avoir une réaction tuberculinique positive est l'anamnèse de contact avec. une personne ayant une tuberculose active
A concentration inequality for interval maps with an indifferent fixed point
For a map of the unit interval with an indifferent fixed point, we prove an
upper bound for the variance of all observables of variables
which are componentwise Lipschitz. The proof is based on
coupling and decay of correlation properties of the map. We then give various
applications of this inequality to the almost-sure central limit theorem, the

Complexity for extended dynamical systems
We consider dynamical systems for which the spatial extension plays an
important role. For these systems, the notions of attractor, epsilon-entropy
and topological entropy per unit time and volume have been introduced
previously. In this paper we use the notion of Kolmogorov complexity to
introduce, for extended dynamical systems, a notion of complexity per unit time
and volume which plays the same role as the metric entropy for classical
dynamical systems. We introduce this notion as an almost sure limit on orbits
of the system. Moreover we prove a kind of variational principle for this

On the degenerated soft-mode instability
We consider instabilities of a single mode with finite wavenumber in
inversion symmetric spatially one dimensional systems, where the character of
the bifurcation changes from sub- to supercritical behaviour. Starting from a
general equation of motion the full amplitude equation is derived
systematically and formulas for the dependence of the coefficients on the
system parameters are obtained. We emphasise the importance of nonlinear
derivative terms in the amplitude equation for the behaviour in the vicinity of
the bifurcation point. Especially the numerical values of the corresponding
coefficients determine the region of coexistence between the stable trivial
solution and stable spatially periodic patterns. Our approach clearly shows

A Two-Parameter Recursion Formula For Scalar Field Theory
We present a two-parameter family of recursion formulas for scalar field
theory. The first parameter is the dimension . The second parameter
() allows one to continuously extrapolate between Wilson's approximate
recursion formula and the recursion formula of Dyson's hierarchical model. We
show numerically that at fixed , the critical exponent depends
continuously on . We suggest the use of the independence as a

High-precision abundances of elements in Kepler LEGACY stars. Verification of trends with stellar age
HARPS-N spectra with S/N > 250 and MARCS model atmospheres were used to
derive abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Y in ten
stars from the Kepler LEGACY sample (including the binary pair 16 Cyg A and B)
selected to have metallicities in the range -0.15 < [Fe/H] < +0.15 and ages
between 1 and 7 Gyr. Stellar gravities were obtained from seismic data and
effective temperatures were determined by comparing non-LTE iron abundances
derived from FeI and FeII lines. Available non-LTE corrections were also
applied when deriving abundances of the other elements. The results support the
[X/Fe]-age relations previously found for solar twins. [Mg/Fe], [Al/Fe], and
[Zn/Fe] decrease by ~0.1 dex over the lifetime of the Galactic thin disk due to
delayed contribution of iron from Type Ia supernovae relative to prompt
production of Mg, Al, and Zn in Type II supernovae. [Y/Mg] and [Y/Al], on the
other hand, increase by ~0.3 dex, which can be explained by an increasing
contribution of s-process elements from low-mass AGB stars as time goes on. The
trends of [C/Fe] and [O/Fe] are more complicated due to variations of the ratio
between refractory and volatile elements among stars of similar age. Two stars
with about the same age as the Sun show very different trends of [X/H] as a
function of elemental condensation temperature Tc and for 16 Cyg, the two
components have an abundance difference, which increases with Tc. These

Evolving localizations in reaction-diffusion cellular automata
We consider hexagonal cellular automata with immediate cell neighbourhood and
three cell-states. Every cell calculates its next state depending on the
integral representation of states in its neighbourhood, i.e. how many
neighbours are in each one state. We employ evolutionary algorithms to breed
local transition functions that support mobile localizations (gliders), and
characterize sets of the functions selected in terms of quasi-chemical systems.
Analysis of the set of functions evolved allows to speculate that mobile
localizations are likely to emerge in the quasi-chemical systems with limited
diffusion of one reagent, a small number of molecules is required for
amplification of travelling localizations, and reactions leading to stationary
localizations involve relatively equal amount of quasi-chemical species.
Techniques developed can be applied in cascading signals in nature-inspired
spatially extended computing devices, and phenomenological studies and

Can we trust elemental abundances derived in late-type giants with the classical 1D stellar atmosphere models?
We compare the abundances of various chemical species as derived with 3D
hydrodynamical and classical 1D stellar atmosphere codes in a late-type giant
characterized by T_eff=3640K, log g = 1.0, [M/H] = 0.0. For this particular set
of atmospheric parameters the 3D-1D abundance differences are generally small
for neutral atoms and molecules but they may reach up to 0.3-0.4 dex in case of
ions. The 3D-1D differences generally become increasingly more negative at
higher excitation potentials and are typically largest in the optical
wavelength range. Their sign can be both positive and negative, and depends on
the excitation potential and wavelength of a given spectral line. While our
results obtained with this particular late-type giant model suggest that 1D
stellar atmosphere models may be safe to use with neutral atoms and molecules,
