Preliminary insight into age and growth of the Iberian chub (Leuciscus pyrenaicus) in the sorraia system
An investigation of age and growth in the Iberian chub Leuciscus pyrenaicus Gunther, 1868 revealed
a seasonal growth pattern, with annulus formation restricted to a short period of the year
(May/June). Maximum ages were 6+ for both sexes. During and after the third year females grew
at faster rates than males, and the most important decrease in growth rates occurred between age I!
and Ill in males and between age Ill and IV in females. Mean back-calculated standard lengths of III and IV age classes were significantly higher in the River Sorraia. Mean weights of I and II age classes were higher in Sor stream whereas the individuals from III ad IV age classes were heavier in the River Sorraia. Shifts in growth rates arc discussed in relation to seasonal and spatial variations
in the environmental conditions as well as to sexual maturity
Feeding behaviour of Barbus Bocagei assessed under a spatio-temporal approach
The feeding behaviour of Barbus bocagei was assessed in a lowland system by a two years survey
Of two contrasting sites also talking into account, for the first time diurnal changes of fish diet and benthos availability
Seed storage conditions change the germination pattern of clonal growth plants in Mediterranean salt marshes.
8 páginas, 4 tablas, 8 figuras. The effect of salinity level and extended exposure to different salinity and flooding conditions on germination patterns of three saltmarsh clonal growth plants (Juncus subulatus, Scirpus litoralis, and S. maritimus) was studied. Seed exposure to extended flooding and saline conditions significantly affected the outcome of the germination process in a different, though predictable, way for each species, after favorable conditions for germination were restored. Tolerance of the germination process was related to the average salinity level measured during the growth/germination season at sites where established individuals of each species dominated the species cover. No relationship was found between salinity tolerance of the germination process and seed response to extended exposure to flooding and salinity conditions. The salinity response was significantly related to the conditions prevailing in the habitats of the respective species during the unfavorable (nongrowth/nongermination) season. Our results indicate that changes in salinity and hydrology while seeds are dormant affect the outcome of the seed-bank response, even when conditions at germination are identical.
Because these environmental-history-dependent responses differentially affect seed germination, seedling density, and probably sexual recruitment in the studied and related species, these influences should be considered for wetland restoration and managementFinancial support from the Spanish Ministry of the Environment (MMA, project 05/99) and the Junta de Andalucía (research group 4086)enabled us to carry out the present work.Peer reviewe

Karyological study of cicindelidia trifasciata (coleoptera, cicindelidae) from cuba: evidence of B chromosomes
Metaphases from germinal tissue of eight males and seven females of Cicindelidia trifasciata from Cuba were analyzed. The species karyotype does not fit the pattern described for Nearctic cicindelids (2n = 18 + XXY): it has 11 autosome pairs and a sex chromosome system of the X1X2X3Y/ X1X1X2X2 X3X3 type, thus a diploid value of 2n = 26 in males and 2n = 28 in females. The first two autosome pairs were almost twice as large as the remaining chromosomes, and the sex elements were morphologically well differentiated. This population was found to be polymorphic for supernumerary chromosomes at both the intraindividual and interindividual levels. An extra small B chromosome was observed in all metaphases of one male (2n = 27), and every female showed metaphases with one to three small Bs, with a clearly higher frequency of cytotype 2n = 29
Accuracy of the European solar water heater test procedure. Part 2 : Prediction of long-term performance
International audienceThis paper continues the evaluation of the European test procedure for solar water heaters, by considering what consequences the errors of the parameters (derived in Part 1, the companion paper) will have for the prediction of the long-term performance. A simple criterion is derived for the required length of the test period, as a function of climatic variables and desired accuracy of the long-term performance prediction. Typically a duration of 10 to 50 days will suffice. Since the actual conditions during a test cannot be foreseen, it will be more efficient to calculate the error of the long-term performance prediction on line at the end of each test day and terminate the series whenever acceptable accuracy is reached
