    Instabilities in Zakharov Equations for Laser Propagation in a Plasma

    F.Linares, G.Ponce, J-C.Saut have proved that a non-fully dispersive Zakharov system arising in the study of Laser-plasma interaction, is locally well posed in the whole space, for fields vanishing at infinity. Here we show that in the periodic case, seen as a model for fields non-vanishing at infinity, the system develops strong instabilities of Hadamard's type, implying that the Cauchy problem is strongly ill-posed

    Associated strangeness production in the pp to pK^+K^-p and pp to pK^+ pi^0 Sigma^0 reactions

    The total and differential cross sections for associated strangeness production in the pp→pK+K−ppp \to pK^+K^-p and pp→pK+π0Σ0pp \to pK^+\pi^0\Sigma^0 reactions have been studied in a unified approach using an effective Lagrangian model. It is assumed that both the K−pK^-p and π0Σ0\pi^0\Sigma^0 final states originate from the decay of the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) resonance which was formed in the production chain pp→p(N∗(1535)→K+Λ(1405))pp\to p(N^*(1535)\to K^+\Lambda(1405)). The available experimental data are well reproduced, especially the ratio of the two total cross sections, which is much less sensitive to the particular model of the entrance channel. The significant coupling of the N∗(1535)N^*(1535) resonance to Λ(1405)K\Lambda(1405) K is further evidence for large ssˉs \bar{s} components in the quark wave function of the N∗(1535)N^*(1535) resonance.Comment: Published in Phys.     The ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey: the X-ray Luminosity Function out to z=0.8

    We present the X-ray Luminosity Function (XLF) of the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS) sample over the redshift range 0.05-0.8. Our results are derived from a complete flux-limited subsample of 70 galaxy clusters, representing the brightest half of the total sample, which have been spectroscopically identified down to the flux limit of 4*10^{-14} erg/cm^2/s (0.5-2.0 keV) and have been selected via a serendipitous search in ROSAT-PSPC pointed observations. The redshift baseline is large enough that evolutionary effects can be studied within the sample. The local XLF (z < 0.25) is found to be in excellent agreement with previous determinations using the ROSAT All-Sky Survey data. The XLF at higher redshifts, when combined with the deepest number counts constructed to date (f>2*10^{-14} arg/cm^2/s), reveal no significant evolution at least out to z=0.8, over a luminosity range 2*10^{42}-3*10^{44} erg/s in the [0.5-2 keV] band. These findings extend the study of cluster evolution to the highest redshifts and the faintest fluxes probed so far in X-ray surveys. They complement and do not necessarily conflict with those of the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey, leaving the possibility of negative evolution of the brightest end of the XLF at high redshifts.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX (aasms4.sty).     Priorities and Preconditions for Successful Investment in Smallholder Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa

    In the past couple of years, there has been resurgence in interest in smallholder agriculture as a potential driver for growth and poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, there remains considerable skepticism as to whether public investment in smallholder agriculture will lead to the desired growth and poverty reduction, given a general pessimism about "absorptive capacity" for (public) investment in Africa, the perception of failure of past agricultural investment and the observation that current conditions are unconducive to agricultural growth in Africa. This paper combines experiences of two UK-based NGOs dedicated to promoting smallholder agriculture and strengthening rural livelihoods in Africa with insights from academic literature on African agriculture and rural markets to set out an agenda for investment in smallholder agriculture in Africa. It identifies priorities for public investment, but also key issues related to "absorptive capacity" that need to be addressed if such investment is to succeed in generating agricultural growth and poverty reduction. Particular emphasis is placed on: a) investment in human and organisational capacity of smallholder farmers; b) investment in coordinated service provision to equip producers to respond to evolving market opportunities; c) the process of developing and implementing credible agricultural development strategies at both national and local level, and; d) reform of Ministries of Agriculture to support this process.International Development,

    Respiratory challenge MRI: practical aspects

    Respiratory challenge MRI is the modification of arterial oxygen (PaO2) and/or carbon dioxide (PaCO2) concentration to induce a change in cerebral function or metabolism which is then measured by MRI. Alterations in arterial gas concentrations can lead to profound changes in cerebral haemodynamics which can be studied using a variety of MRI sequences. Whilst such experiments may provide a wealth of information, conducting them can be complex and challenging. In this paper we review the rationale for respiratory challenge MRI including the effects of oxygen and carbon dioxide on the cerebral circulation. We also discuss the planning, equipment, monitoring and techniques that have been used to undertake these experiments. We finally propose some recommendations in this evolving area for conducting these experiments to enhance data quality and comparison between techniques

    Optimal Quantum Circuits for General Two-Qubit Gates

    In order to demonstrate non-trivial quantum computations experimentally, such as the synthesis of arbitrary entangled states, it will be useful to understand how to decompose a desired quantum computation into the shortest possible sequence of one-qubit and two-qubit gates. We contribute to this effort by providing a method to construct an optimal quantum circuit for a general two-qubit gate that requires at most 3 CNOT gates and 15 elementary one-qubit gates. Moreover, if the desired two-qubit gate corresponds to a purely real unitary transformation, we provide a construction that requires at most 2 CNOTs and 12 one-qubit gates. We then prove that these constructions are optimal with respect to the family of CNOT, y-rotation, z-rotation, and phase gates.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, new title, final journal versio

    From single steps to mass migration: the problem of scale in the movement ecology of the Serengeti wildebeest

    A central question in ecology is how to link processes that occur over different scales. The daily interactions of individual organisms ultimately determine community dynamics, population fluctuations and the functioning of entire ecosystems. Observations of these multiscale ecological processes are constrained by various technological, biological or logistical issues, and there are often vast discrepancies between the scale at which observation is possible and the scale of the question of interest. Animal movement is characterized by processes that act over multiple spatial and temporal scales. Second-by-second decisions accumulate to produce annual movement patterns. Individuals influence, and are influenced by, collective movement decisions, which then govern the spatial distribution of populations and the connectivity of meta-populations. While the field of movement ecology is experiencing unprecedented growth in the availability of movement data, there remain challenges in integrating observations with questions of ecological interest. In this article, we present the major challenges of addressing these issues within the context of the Serengeti wildebeest migration, a keystone ecological phenomena that crosses multiple scales of space, time and biological complexity.
