Global Gower: The Archer Aiming at the World

    Get PDF
This article explores the Vox Clamantis’ famous image of the archer shooting an arrow at a globe. There are sources and analogues for all the elements of the picture, but their combination and reinvention have produced a unique iconography. Gower’s multispectral conception of the globe combines ecological features with human estates with divine justice. Huntington Library HM 150 extends this innovation further, possibly even linking the miniature to the Wilton Diptych via the cross and pennon planted on the top of its globe. The complexity of the ideas embedded in the archer images suggests that Gower himself, and not the artist(s) he employed, designed the iconography

Peripheral Intravenous Infiltrates: Engaging Staff to Increase Reporting

    Get PDF
A large free standing children’s academic hospital aimed to improve patient safety and outcomes by decreasing the overall severity of peripheral intravenous infiltration and extravasations (PIVIEs). A care bundle was developed by creating a PIVIE measurement tool within the electronic medical record (EMR) and integrating the tool into standardized daily practice for nurses. The care bundle included creating a team of clinical leaders consisting of empowered bedside nurses acting as mobilized resources embedded into each unit. The initiative resulted in a large scale increase in reported PIVIEs system-wide within 1 month of education dissemination to bedside RN staff. The QI interventions captured a realistic interpretation allowing for a more global and accurate reflection of the number and severity of PIVIE events system-wide, while creating documentation for the PIVIE tool in the EMR and a clinical leader model. The results reflected a dramatic rise in the number of reported PIVIE events, increase in staff awareness of PIVIEs, increased peripheral intravenous line assessments, and decreased severity of PIVIEs that do occur

The Effect of Cigarette Excise Taxes on Smoking Before, During and After Pregnancy

    Get PDF
Recent analyses suggest that cigarette excise taxes lower prenatal smoking. It is unclear, however, whether the association between taxes and prenatal smoking represents a decline among women of reproductive age or a particular response by pregnant women. We address this question directly with an analysis of quit and relapse behavior during and after pregnancy. We find that the price elasticity of prenatal quitting and postpartum relapse is close to one in absolute value. We conclude that direct financial incentives to stop smoking during and after pregnancy should be considered.

An all-order discontinuity at the electroweak phase transition

    Get PDF
We define a non-local gauge-invariant Green's function which can distinguish between the symmetric (confinement) and broken (Higgs) phases of the hot SU(2)xU(1) electroweak theory to all orders in the perturbative expansion. It is related to the coupling of the Chern-Simons number to a massless Abelian gauge field. The result implies either that there is a way to distinguish between the phases, even though the macroscopic thermodynamical properties of the system have been observed to be smoothly connected, or that the perturbative Coleman-Hill theorem on which the argument is based, is circumvented by non-perturbative effects. We point out that this question could in principle be studied with three-dimensional lattice simulations.Comment: 9 pages; misprint corrected, reference and small clarifications added; to appear in Phys.Lett.

A Note on Fluxes and Superpotentials in M-theory Compactifications on Manifolds of G_2 Holonomy

We consider the breaking of N=1 supersymmetry by non-zero G-flux when M-theory is compactified on a smooth manifold X of G_2 holonomy. Gukov has proposed a superpotential W to describe this breaking in the low-energy effective theory. We check this proposal by comparing the bosonic potential implied by W with the corresponding potential deduced from the eleven-dimensional supergravity action. One interesting aspect of this check is that, though W depends explicitly only on G-flux supported on X, W also describes the breaking of supersymmetry by G-flux transverse to X.Comment: 15 pages, harvmac, v2: reference adde

When the Zone of Proximal Development Becomes a Virtual Zone: An Examination of Scaffolded Instruction in an Online Literacy Course

    Get PDF
This qualitative inquiry described the scaffolding provided by the instructor and class participants in an online graduate literacy course. Participants included the instructor and 16 students. Data were 588 bulletin board messages which were analyzed using the constant-comparative method. Analysis revealed five areas in which scaffolding occurred (a) technology, (b) assignments, (c) online processes, (d) literacy concepts, and (e) educational concepts. Through on-line conversations in this course, a community was established allowing the instructor and participants to provide support by scaffolding instruction at the point of need
