    Wind tunnel evaluation of YF-12 inlet response to internal airflow disturbances with and without control

    The response of terminal-shock position and static pressures in the subsonic duct of a YF-12 aircraft flight-hardware inlet to perturbations in simulated engine corrected airflow were obtained with and without inlet control. Frequency response data, obtained with inlet controls inactive, indicated the general nature of the inherent inlet dynamics, assisted in the design of controls, and provided a baseline reference for responses with active controls. All the control laws were implemented by means of a digital computer that could be programmed to behave like the flight inlet's existing analog control. The experimental controls were designed using an analytical optimization technique. The capabilities of the controls were limited primarily by the actuation hardware. The experimental controls provided somewhat better attenuation of terminal shock excursions than did the YF-13 inlet control. Controls using both the forward and aft bypass systems also provided somewhat better attenuation than those using just the forward bypass. The main advantage of using both bypasses is in the greater control flexibility that is achieved

    Velocity bias in a LCDM model

    We use N-body simulations to study the velocity bias of dark matter halos, the difference in the velocity fields of dark matter and halos, in a flat low- density LCDM model. The high force, 2kpc/h, and mass, 10^9Msun/h, resolution allows dark matter halos to survive in very dense environments of groups and clusters making it possible to use halos as galaxy tracers. We find that the velocity bias pvb measured as a ratio of pairwise velocities of the halos to that of the dark matter evolves with time and depends on scale. At high redshifts (z ~5) halos move generally faster than the dark matter almost on all scales: pvb(r)~1.2, r>0.5Mpc/h. At later moments the bias decreases and gets below unity on scales less than r=5Mpc/h: pvb(r)~(0.6-0.8) at z=0. We find that the evolution of the pairwise velocity bias follows and probably is defined by the spatial antibias of the dark matter halos at small scales. One-point velocity bias b_v, defined as the ratio of the rms velocities of halos and dark matter, provides a more direct measure of the difference in velocities because it is less sensitive to the spatial bias. We analyze b_v in clusters of galaxies and find that halos are ``hotter'' than the dark matter: b_v=(1.2-1.3) for r=(0.2-0.8)r_vir, where r_vir is the virial radius. At larger radii, b_v decreases and approaches unity at r=(1-2)r_vir. We argue that dynamical friction may be responsible for this small positive velocity bias b_v>1 found in the central parts of clusters. We do not find significant difference in the velocity anisotropy of halos and the dark matter.     Food for Thought: Genetically Modified Seeds as De Facto Standard Essential Patents

    For several years, courts have been improperly calculating damages in cases involving the unlicensed use of genetically-modified (GM) seed technology. In particular, when courts determine patent damages based on the hypothetical negotiation method, they err in exaggerating these damages to a point where no rational negotiator would agree. In response, we propose a limited affirmative defense of an implied license due to the patent’s status as a de facto standard essential patent. To be classified as a de facto standard essential patent, the farmer must prove three elements that reflect the peculiarities of GM seeds used in farming: (1) dominance, (2) impracticability, and (3) necessary to fulfill a basic need. Based on the approaches used by courts and standard setting organizations in licensing standard essential patents in technological fields such as cell phones and software, designation of some GM seeds as standard essential patents allows the courts to imply a license from patentees to farmers on reasonable and non-discriminatory (RAND) terms. Doing so shifts the case from a tort-based patent infringement suit to a breach of contract dispute and alters the damages regime from one based in compensation, deterrence, and punishment (a tort approach) to one based solely in compensation (a contractual approach). As a result of this novel proposal, the damages calculations in these suits return to economic reality

    A throat-bypass stability system for a YF-12 aircraft research inlet using self-acting mechanical valves

    Results of a wind tunnel investigation are presented. The inlet was modified so that airflow can be removed through a porous cowl-bleed region in the vicinity of the throat. Bleed plenum exit flow area is controlled by relief type mechanical valves. Unlike valves in previous systems, these are made for use in a high Mach flight environment and include refinements so that the system could be tested on a NASA YF-12 aircraft. The valves were designed to provide their own reference pressure. The results show that the system can absorb internal-airflow-transients that are too fast for a conventional bypass door control system and that the two systems complement each other quite well. Increased tolerance to angle of attack and Mach number changes is indicated. The valves should provide sufficient time for the inlet control system to make geometry changes required to keep the inlet started

    A throat-bypass stability-bleed system using relief valves to increase the transient stability of a mixed-compression inlet

    A stability-bleed system was installed in a YF-12 flight inlet that was subjected to internal and external airflow disturbances in the NASA Lewis 10 by 10 foot supersonic wind tunnel. The purpose of the system is to allow higher inlet performance while maintaining a substantial tolerance (without unstart) to internal and external disturbances. At Mach numbers of 2.47 and 2.76, the inlet tolerance to decreases in diffuser-exit corrected airflow was increased by approximately 10 percent of the operating-point airflow. The stability-bleed system complemented the terminal-shock-control system of the inlet and did not show interaction problems. For disturbances which caused a combined decrease in Mach number and increase in angle of attack, the system with valves operative kept the inlet started 4 to 28 times longer than with the valves inoperative. Hence, the stability system provides additional time for the inlet control system to react and prevent unstart. This was observed for initial Mach numbers of 2.55 and 2.68. For slow increase in angle of attack at Mach 2.47 and 2.76, the system kept the inlet started beyond the steady-state unstart angle. However, the maximum transient angles of attack without unstart could not be determined because wind-tunnel mechanical-stop limits for angle of attack were reached

    Shocks in asymmetric simple exclusion processes of interacting particles

    In this paper, we study shocks and related transitions in asymmetric simple exclusion processes of particles with nearest neighbor interactions. We consider two kinds of inter-particle interactions. In one case, the particle-hole symmetry is broken due to the interaction. In the other case, particles have an effective repulsion due to which the particle-current-density drops down near the half filling. These interacting particles move on a one dimensional lattice which is open at both the ends with injection of particles at one end and withdrawal of particles at the other. In addition to this, there are possibilities of attachments or detachments of particles to or from the lattice with certain rates. The hydrodynamic equation that involves the exact particle current-density of the particle conserving system and additional terms taking care of the attachment-detachment kinetics is studied using the techniques of boundary layer analysis.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
