    Chromium isotopes in marine hydrothermal sediments

    Hydrothermal chromium (Cr) cycling contributes to marine Cr inventories and their Cr isotopic composition, yet Cr isotope effects associated with this cycling remain poorly documented. Here we determine the distribution, isotopic composition, and diagenetic mobility of Cr in hydrothermal sediments from the distal flank of the South East Pacific Rise (SEPR, DSDP-site 598). We find that Cr is primarily associated with the metalliferous iron (oxyhydr) oxide and detrital components of the sediment (0.4ā€“3.6ā€Æmgā€Ækgā»Ā¹), whereas Cr concentrations are much lower in the dominant carbonate phase (80% Cr from the sediment relative to Fe. We propose this loss is tied to oxidation of authigenic Cr(III) to Cr(VI) followed by diagenetic remobilization and efflux from the sediment pile. The bulk Ī“āµĀ³Cr composition of the SEPR sediments is isotopically light (āˆ’0.24 to āˆ’0.57ā€ÆĀ±ā€Æ0.05ā€°) and the authigenic Ī“āµĀ³Cr is as light as āˆ’1.2ā€ÆĀ±ā€Æ0.2ā€°, and we argue that this light Cr isotopic composition results from the partial reduction of oxic seawater-bearing Cr(VI) by reduced hydrothermal vent fluids enriched in Fe(II)aq. Diagenetic oxidation of the reactive Cr pool by Mn-oxides and loss of Cr(VI) from the sediment may further deplete the sediment in āµĀ³Cr during diagenesis. The Ī“āµĀ³Cr composition of the detrital Cr fraction of the sediment (average Ī“āµĀ³Cr compositionā€Æ=ā€Æāˆ’0.05ā€ÆĀ±ā€Æ0.04ā€°) falls within the igneous silicate earth (ISE) range, revealing that detrital Cr delivered to this region of the Pacific ocean is unfractionated, and has carried a relatively constant Ī“āµĀ³Cr composition over the last 5.7ā€Æmillionā€Æyears. Together our results show that light Ī“āµĀ³Cr compositions in hydrothermal sediments are imparted through a combination of processes previously overlooked in the marine Cr biogeochemical cycle, and that the Ī“āµĀ³Cr composition of such sediments may provide a rich source of information on paleo-marine redox conditions

    Successful ACL reconstruction with a variant of the pes anserinus

    An anatomical variant of the pes anserinus encountered during anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery which has not been previously described is discussed. During routine harvesting, the sartorius fascia was incised and the semitendinosus and gracilis tendons were identified. At the distal portion, it was noted that each tendon gave off an additional tendinous slip. The slip from the semitendinosus tendon had attached to the gracilis tendon and vice versa, thereby creating a double pes anserinus. This variant was used to construct the graft, and at 1Ā year review the patient had returned to full sporting activities with no complications encountered

    The Galaxy Structure-Redshift Relationship

    There exists a gradual, but persistent, evolutionary effect in the galaxy population such that galaxy structure and morphology change with redshift. This galaxy structure-redshift relationship is such that an increasingly large fraction of all bright and massive galaxies at redshifts 2 < z < 3 are morphologically peculiar at wavelengths from rest-frame ultraviolet to rest-frame optical. There are however examples of morphologically selected spirals and ellipticals at all redshifts up to z ~ 3. At lower redshift, the bright galaxy population smoothly transforms into normal ellipticals and spirals. The rate of this transformation strongly depends on redshift, with the swiftest evolution occurring between 1 < z < 2. This review characterizes the galaxy structure-redshift relationship, discusses its various physical causes, and how these are revealing the mechanisms responsible for galaxy formation.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures.     Autonomy of Nations and Indigenous Peoples and the Environmental Release of Genetically Engineered Animals with Gene Drives

    This article contends that the environmental release of genetically engineered (GE) animals with heritable traits that are patented will present a challenge to the efforts of nations and indigenous peoples to engage in selfā€determination. The environmental release of such animals has been proposed on the grounds that they could function as public health tools or as solutions to the problem of agricultural insect pests. This article brings into focus two politicalā€economicā€legal problems that would arise with the environmental release of such organisms. To address those challenges, it is proposed that nations considering the environmental release of GE animals must take into account the underlying circumstances and policy failures that motivate arguments for the use of the modified animals. Moreover, countries must recognize that the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the UN International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights place on them an obligation to ensure that GE animals with patented heritable traits are not released without the substantive consent of the nations or indigenous peoples that could be affected

    An empirical investigation of the influence of collaboration in Finance on article impact

    We investigate the impact of collaborative research in academic Finance literature to find out whether and to what extent collaboration leads to higher impact articles (6,667 articles across 2001-2007 extracted from the Web of Science). Using the top 5 % as ranked by the 4-year citation counts following publication, we also follow related secondary research questions such as the relationships between article impact and author impact; collaboration and average author impact of an article; and, the nature of geographic collaboration. Key findings indicate: collaboration does lead to articles of higher impact but there is no significant marginal value for collaboration beyond three authors; high impact articles are not monopolized by high impact authors; collaboration and the average author impact of high-impact articles are positively associated, where collaborative articles have a higher mean author impact in comparison to single-author articles; and collaboration among the authors of high impact articles is mostly cross-institutional

    ā€˜Do i care?ā€™ young adults' recalled experiences of early adolescent overweight and obesity: a qualitative study

    &lt;p&gt;Objective:Ā Individual behaviour change to reduce obesity requires awareness of, and concern about, weight. This paper therefore describes how young adults, known to have been overweight or obese during early adolescence, recalled early adolescent weight-related awareness and concerns. Associations between recalled concerns and weight-, health- and peer-related survey responses collected during adolescence are also examined.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Design:Ā Qualitative semi-structured interviews with young adults; data compared with responses to self-report questionnaires obtained in adolescence.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Participants:Ā A total of 35 participants, purposively sub-sampled at age 24 from a longitudinal study of a school year cohort, previously surveyed at ages 11, 13 and 15. Physical measures during previous surveys allowed identification of participants with a body mass index (BMI) indicative of overweight or obesity (based on British 1990 growth reference) during early adolescence. Overall, 26 had been obese, of whom 11 had BMI99.6th centile, whereas 9 had been overweight (BMI=95thā€“97.9th centile).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Measures:Ā Qualitative interview responses describing teenage life, with prompts for school-, social- and health-related concerns. Early adolescent self-report questionnaire data on weight-worries, self-esteem, friends and victimisation (closed questions).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Results:Ā Most, but not all recalled having been aware of their overweight. None referred to themselves as having been obese. None recalled weight-related health worries. Recollection of early adolescent obesity varied from major concerns impacting on much of an individual's life to almost no concern, with little relation to actual severity of overweight. Recalled concerns were not clearly patterned by gender, but young adult males recalling concerns had previously reported more worries about weight, lower self-esteem, fewer friends and more victimisation in early adolescence; no such pattern was seen among females. Conclusion:Ā The popular image of the unhappy overweight teenager was not borne out. Many obese adolescents, although well aware of their overweight recalled neither major dissatisfaction nor concern. Weight-reduction behaviours are unlikely in such circumstances.&lt;/p&gt

    Associations of sedentary behaviour, physical activity, blood pressure and anthropometric measures with cardiorespiratory fitness in children with cerebral palsy

    Background - Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have poor cardiorespiratory fitness in comparison to their peers with typical development, which may be due to low levels of physical activity. Poor cardiorespiratory fitness may contribute to increased cardiometabolic risk. Purpose - The aim of this study was to determine the association between sedentary behaviour, physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness in children with CP. An objective was to determine the association between cardiorespiratory fitness, anthropometric measures and blood pressure in children with CP. Methods- This study included 55 ambulatory children with CP [mean (SD) age 11.3 (0.2) yr, range 6-17 yr; Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I and II]. Anthropometric measures (BMI, waist circumference and waist-height ratio) and blood pressure were taken. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured using a 10 m shuttle run test. Children were classified as low, middle and high fitness according to level achieved on the test using reference curves. Physical activity was measured by accelerometry over 7 days. In addition to total activity, time in sedentary behaviour and light, moderate, vigorous, and sustained moderate-to-vigorous activity (ā‰„10 min bouts) were calculated. Results - Multiple regression analyses revealed that vigorous activity (Ī² = 0.339, p<0.01), sustained moderate-to-vigorous activity (Ī² = 0.250, p<0.05) and total activity (Ī² = 0.238, p<0.05) were associated with level achieved on the shuttle run test after adjustment for age, sex and GMFCS level. Children with high fitness spent more time in vigorous activity than children with middle fitness (p<0.05). Shuttle run test level was negatively associated with BMI (r2 = -0.451, p<0.01), waist circumference (r2 = -0.560, p<0.001), waist-height ratio (r2 = -0.560, p<0.001) and systolic blood pressure (r2 = -0.306, p<0.05) after adjustment for age, sex and GMFCS level. Conclusions - Participation in physical activity, particularly at a vigorous intensity, is associated with high cardiorespiratory fitness in children with CP. Low cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk

    We summarize recent advances in the determination of the cosmic history of star formation and other properties of high-z galaxies, and the relevance of this information in our understanding of the formation of structures. We emphasize the importance of dust reprocessing in the high--z universe, as demonstrated in particular by IR and sub-mm data. This demand a panchromatic approach to observations and suitable modelling tools. We spend also some words on expectations from future instruments
