    Armor and Amour

    Get PDF
Armor and Amour is an artistic outcome grounded in French history, namely the interpretation of Joan of Arc, along with the use of modern 3D printing technology. It is a women\u27s apparel silhouette combining elements of the French heroine\u27s life, namely, the juxtaposition of feminine youth against the masculine warrior. Using historical armor as a reference, the hand embellishment mimics military garments of the past, with the decidedly modern utilization of 3D printed elements and a feminine touch. It is a work that explores how the past consistently informs the future and is intended to illustrate the strength, resiliency and duality of the female spirit

Improving Postpartum Depression Screening Practices in the Postpartum Setting

    Get PDF
Abstract Problem: Postpartum Depression (PPD) is frequently undetected in women due to barriers that limit effective recognition and diagnosis. Depression screenings and treatment referrals improve outcomes in the immediate postpartum period. Follow-up methods for positive depression screens are often missed by postpartum care teams. Methods: A descriptive, observational design was used for this quality improvement project. A formalized depression screening protocol was created to help guide nursing staff on a Postpartum Unit when detecting a positive depression screen. Convenience sampling was utilized and the sample included patients aged 18-45. Data collected throughout this quality improvement project included Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) scores greater than 10 and the number of completed and/or missed social work consults and OBGYN notifications. Results: A total of 66 positive depression screens were identified during data collection. Prior to the implementation of the QI project, social work consults were completed at a rate of 96.9% (n = 31), and 3.1% (n = 1) were missed. The rate of completed OBGYN notifications was 62.5% (n = 5), and 37.5% (n = 3) were missed. After implementing the QI project, the rate of completed social work consults increased to 100% (n = 34), and 0% (n = 0) were missed. The rate of completed OBGYN notifications increased to 81.8% (n = 9), and 18.2% (n = 2) were missed. Completed follow-up methods for positive depression screens were improved by utilizing a depression screening protocol. Implications for Practice: Implementing a formalized depression screening protocol is an effective intervention to help improve routine screening and completion of follow-up methods for positive depression screens leading to favorable outcomes for mothers

Errors in Length-weight Parameters at FishBase.org

Background: FishBase.org is an on-line database of fish related data that has been cited over 1500 times in the fisheries literature. Length-weight relationships in fish traditionally employ the model, W(L) = aL^b^, where L is length and W is weight. Parameters a and b are catalogued by FishBase for a large number of sources and species. FishBase.org detects outliers in a plot of log(a) vs. b to identify dubious length-weight parameters.
Materials and Methods: To investigate possible errors, length-weight parameters from FishBase.org were used to graph length-weight curves for six different species: channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), black crappie (Pomoxis nigromacalatus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris), and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) along with the standard weight curves (Anderson and Neumann 1996, Bister et al. 2000). Parameters noted as “doubtful” by FishBase were excluded. For each species, variations in curves were noted, and the minimum and maximum predicted weights for a 30 cm long fish were compared with each other and with the standard weight for that length. For lake trout, additional comparisons were made between the parameters and study details reported in FishBase.org for 6 of 8 length-weight relationships and those reported in the reference (Carlander 1969) for those 6 relationships.
Results: In all species studied, minimum and maximum curves produced with the length-weight parameters at FishBase.org are notably different from each other, and in many cases predict weights that are clearly absurd. For example, one set of parameters predicts a 30 cm rainbow trout weighing 44 g. For 30 cm length, the range of weights (relative to the standard weight) for each species are: channel catfish (31.4% to 193.1%), black crappie (54.0% to 149.0%), largemouth bass (28.8% to 130.4%), rainbow trout (14.9% to 113.4%), flathead catfish (29.3% to 250.7%), and lake trout (44.0% to 152.7%). Ten of the twelve extreme curves reference two sources (Carlander 1969 and Carlander 1977). These two sources are used for a total of 100 different species at FishBase.org. In the case of lake trout, comparing the length-weight table at FishBase.org and the cited source (Carlander 1969) revealed that while 5 of 6 total length measurements were incorrectly reported as fork lengths by FishBase.org, all parameters accurately reflected the source. Comparing the length-weight relationships of the source (Carlander 1969) with the table of weights in different length ranges reveals the length-weight parameters in the source are clearly in error. However, FishBase.org also neglects to specify clearly distinguished subspecies and/or phenotypes such as siscowet and humper lake trout.
Conclusion: Length-weight tables at FishBase.org are not generally reliable and the on-line database contains dubious parameters. Assurance of quality probably will require a systematic review with more careful and comprehensive methods than those currently employed.

Backlash to the European Court of Human Rights: The Case of Russia

    Get PDF
Since the end of World War II, the international community has forged human rights accountability systems that have since become increasingly important. The good work done by these international tribunals has come under threat more and more by a process of backlash called tribunal capture, or “the politics of states and individual political leaders seeking to undermine the tribunals by working within the judicialized and legalized landscape of international human rights law” (Hillebrecht). The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) is no exception; since its foundation, it has been largely utilized. However, lack of compliance with its rulings remains to be and underlying problem. Russia, a key member state of the institution, has historically demonstrated cases of systematic noncompliance with rulings of the ECtHR, and continues to do so. This study examined the relations between Russia and the COE since the widely condemned annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 in order to better understand the processes and ongoing ramifications of tribunal capture

Working to Improve Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination Uptake in Michigan

    Get PDF
Increased cases of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) related cancers and low HPV vaccine uptake are public health concerns that directly affect young adults and adolescents around the country. The HPV vaccine is recommended to prevent HPV associated cancers. Increased awareness and health education interventions are needed to promote the importance of the HPV vaccine and to achieve an HPV vaccine completion rate of 80% as outlined by the Healthy People 2020 goal. The Michigan Cancer Consortium HPV vaccine Priority Workgroup is working to improve vaccine uptake in Michigan through statewide projects that promote health education resources and address barriers associated with low HPV vaccine uptake

Rational combinations of Betti diagrams of complete intersections

We investigate decompositions of Betti diagrams over a polynomial ring within the framework of Boij-S\"oderberg theory. That is, given a Betti diagram, we determine if it is possible to decompose it into the Betti diagrams of complete intersections. To do so, we determine the extremal rays of the cone generated by the diagrams of complete intersections and provide a rudimentary algorithm for decomposition.Comment: This research was conducted at the Willamette Mathematics Consortium RE

Analysis of inquiry materials to explain complexity of chemical reasoning in physical chemistry students’ argumentation

One aim of inquiry activities in science education is to promote students’ participation in the practices used to build scientific knowledge by providing opportunities to engage in scientific discourse. However, many factors influence the actual outcomes and effect on students’ learning when using inquiry materials. In this study, discourse from two physical chemistry classrooms using the Process‐Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) approach was analyzed using a lens of scientific argumentation. Analysis of the complexity of reasoning in students’ arguments using a learning progression on chemical thinking indicated that students did not employ very complex reasoning to construct arguments. To explain the distribution of reasoning observed, a separate analysis of the curricular materials was performed using the Task Analysis Guide for Science (TAGS). Results indicate a relationship between the task’s targeted scientific practice and how students used evidence in their arguments as well as between the task’s cognitive demand and the complexity of reasoning employed in arguments. Examples illustrating these relationships can be used to inform implications for design of inquiry materials, facilitation of classroom discourse, and future research. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
