JCV-specific T-cells producing IFN-gamma are differently associated with PmL occurrence in HIV patients and liver transplant recipients
Aim of this work was to investigate a possible correlation between the frequency of JCV-specific T-cells and PML occurrence in HIV-infected subjects and in liver transplant recipients. A significant decrease of JCV-specific T-cells was observed in HIV-PML subjects, highlighting a close relation between JCV-specific T-cell immune impairment and PML occurrence in HIV-subjects. Interestingly, liver-transplant recipients (LTR) showed a low frequency of JCV-specific T-cells, similar to HIV-PML subjects. Nevertheless, none of the enrolled LTR developed PML, suggesting the existence of different immunological mechanisms involved in the maintenance of a protective immune response in LT
Monte-Carlo Simulations of the Suzaku-XRS Residual Background Spectrum
Cryogenic micro-calorimeters are suitable to detect small amounts of energy deposited by electromagnetic and nuclear interactions, which makes them attractive in a variety of applications on ground and in space. The only X-ray microcalorimeter that operated in orbit to date is the X-Ray Spectrometer on-board of the Japanese Suzaku satellite. CD4 T lymphocyte autophagy is upregulated in the salivary glands of primary Sjögren’s syndrome patients and correlates with focus score and disease activity
Background: Primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) is a common chronic autoimmune disease characterized by
lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands and peripheral lymphocyte perturbation. In the current study, we
aimed to investigate the possible pathogenic implication of autophagy in T lymphocytes in patients with pSS.
Methods: Thirty consecutive pSS patients were recruited together with 20 patients affected by sicca syndrome a
nd/or chronic sialoadenitis and 30 healthy controls. Disease activity and damage were evaluated according to SS
disease activity index, EULAR SS disease activity index, and SS disease damage index. T lymphocytes were analyzed
for the expression of autophagy-specific markers by biochemical, molecular, and histological assays in peripheral
blood and labial gland biopsies. Serum interleukin (IL)-23 and IL-21 levels were quantified by enzyme-linked
immunosorbent assay.
Results: Our study provides evidence for the first time that autophagy is upregulated in CD4+ T lymphocyte salivary
glands from pSS patients. Furthermore, a statistically significant correlation was detected between lymphocyte
autophagy levels, disease activity, and damage indexes. We also found a positive correlation between autophagy
enhancement and the increased salivary gland expression of IL-21 and IL-23, providing a further link between innate
and adaptive immune responses in pSS.
Conclusions: These findings suggest that CD4+ T lymphocyte autophagy could play a key role in pSS pathogenesis.
Additionally, our data highlight the potential exploitation of T cell autophagy as a biomarker of disease activity and
provide new ground to verify the therapeutic implications of autophagy as an innovative drug target in pSS

ORIGIN: Metal Creation and Evolution from the Cosmic Dawn
ORIGIN is a proposal for the M3 mission call of ESA aimed at the study of metal creation from the epoch of cosmic dawn. Using high-spectral resolution in the soft X-ray band, ORIGIN will be able to identify the physical conditions of all abundant elements between C and Ni to red-shifts of z=10, and beyond. The mission will answer questions such as: When were the first metals created? How does the cosmic metal content evolve? Where do most of the metals reside in the Universe? What is the role of metals in structure formation and evolution? To reach out to the early Universe ORIGIN will use Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) to study their local environments in their host galaxies. This requires the capability to slew the satellite in less than a minute to the GRB location. By studying the chemical composition and properties of clusters of galaxies we can extend the range of exploration to lower redshifts (z approx. 0.2). For this task we need a high-resolution spectral imaging instrument with a large field of view. Using the same instrument, we can also study the so far only partially detected baryons in the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). The less dense part of the WHIM will be studied using absorption lines at low redshift in the spectra for GRBs. The ORIGIN mission includes a Transient Event Detector (coded mask with a sensitivity of 0.4 photon/sq cm/s in 10 s in the 5-150 keV band) to identify and localize 2000 GRBs over a five year mission, of which approx.65 GRBs have a redshift >7. The Cryogenic Imaging Spectrometer, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV, a field of view of 30 arcmin and large effective area below 1 keV has the sensitivity to study clusters up to a significant fraction of the virial radius and to map the denser parts of the WHIM (factor 30 higher than achievable with current instruments). The payload is complemented by a Burst InfraRed Telescope to enable onboard red-shift determination of GRBs (hence securing proper follow up of high-z bursts) and also probes the mildly ionized state of the gas. Fast repointing is achieved by a dedicated Controlled Momentum Gyro and a low background is achieved by the selected low Earth orbit
Moyamoya Disease in an 8-Year-Old Boy : Direct Bypass Surgery in a Province of Peru
BACKGROUND: Pediatric moyamoya cases may be very arduous, even more so in a developing country, where access to specialized centers may be prevented by different factors. CASE DESCRIPTION: Herein we report a challenging case, which was managed in the new Neurosurgical Center of Trujillo, regarding the direct anastomosis between the left superficial temporal artery and a cortical branch of the left middle cerebral artery in a 8-year-old Peruvian boy with moyamoya disease. Postoperatively, the patient's motor deficits and aphasia improved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first performance of a direct revascularization for a pediatric moyamoya case in Peru. CONCLUSIONS: The creation of highly specialized neurosurgical centers in the main strategic places of developing countries may allow optimal treatment of neurosurgical patients with complex diseases.Peer reviewe
