    Parameters of core-collapse

    This paper considers the phenomenon of deep core collapse in collisional stellar systems, with stars of equal mass. The collapse takes place on some multiple, Ī¾āˆ’1\xi ^{-1}, of the central relaxation time, and produces a density profile in which Ļāˆrāˆ’Ī±\rho \propto r^{-\alpha}, where Ī±\alpha is a constant. The parameters Ī±\alpha and Ī¾\xi have usually been determined from simplified models, such as gas and Fokker-Planck models, often with the simplification of isotropy.     Public Policy Experiments without Equipoise: When is Randomization Fair?

    Government agencies and nonprofit organizations have increasingly turned to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate public policy interventions. Random assignment is widely understood to be fair when there is equipoise; however, some scholars and practitioners argue that random assignment is also permissible when an intervention is reasonably expected to be superior to other trial arms. For example, some argue that random assignment to such an intervention is fair when the intervention is scarce, for it is sometimes fair to use a lottery to allocate scarce goods. We investigate the permissibility of randomization in public policy RCTs when there is no equipoise, identifying two sets of conditions under which it is fair to allocate access to a superior intervention via random assignment. We also reject oft-made claims that alternative study designs, including stepped-wedge designs and uneven randomization, offer fair ways to allocate beneficial interventions

    Absence of singular superconducting fluctuation corrections to thermal conductivity

    We evaluate the superconducting fluctuation corrections to thermal conductivity in the normal state which diverge as T approaches T_c. We find zero total contribution for one, two and three-dimensional superconductors for arbitrary impurity concentration. The method used is diagrammatic many-body theory, and all contributions -- Aslamazov-Larkin (AL), Maki-Thompson (MT), and density-of-states (DOS) -- are considered. The AL contribution is convergent, whilst the divergences of the DOS and MT diagrams exactly cancel.Comment: 4 pages text; 2 figure

    Gravothermal oscillations in two-component models of star clusters

    In this paper, gravothermal oscillations are investigated in two-component clusters with a range of different stellar mass ratios and total component mass ratios. The critical number of stars at which gravothermal oscillations first appeared is found using a gas code. The nature of the oscillations is investigated and it is shown that the oscillations can be understood by focusing on the behaviour of the heavier component, because of mass segregation. It is argued that, during each oscillation, the re-collapse of the cluster begins at larger radii while the core is still expanding. This re-collapse can halt and reverse a gravothermally driven expansion. This material outside the core contracts because it is losing energy both to the cool expanding core and to the material at larger radii. The core collapse times for each model are also found and discussed. For an appropriately chosen case, direct N -body runs were carried out, in order to check the results obtained from the gas model, including evidence of the gravothermal nature of the oscillations and the temperature inversion that drives the expansion.Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures and 8 tables.     Making a decision about surgery for female urinary incontinence: a qualitative study of women's views.

    INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: This qualitative interview study explores aspects women with urinary incontinence(UI) reflect upon when considering whether or not to have surgery. Conducted prior to the recent mesh pause in the UK, the article provides insights for current and future approaches to shared decision-making. METHODS: Qualitative in-depth interviews of 28 patients referred to secondary care for stress and mixed UI who were considering UI surgery. Participants were recruited from four urogynaecology clinics in the Midlands and South England, UK. Interviews were conducted in clinics, in patient homes, and by telephone. Data analysis was based on the constant comparative method. RESULTS: Participants' accounts comprised three key concerns: their experience of symptoms, the extent to which these impacted a variety of social roles and demands, and overcoming embarrassment. Accounts drew on individual circumstances, values, and concerns rather than objective or measurable criteria. In combination, these dimensions constituted a personal assessment of the severity of their UI and hence framed the extent to which women prioritized addressing their condition. CONCLUSIONS: Acknowledging women's personal accounts of UI shifts the concept of 'severity' beyond a medical definition to include what is important to patients themselves. Decision-making around elective surgery must endeavour to link medical information with women's own experiences and personal criteria, which often change in priority over time. We propose that this research provides insight into how the controversy around the use of mesh in the UK emerged.     Because Gibraltar's macaques (Macaca sylvanus) have frequent contact with humans, we assayed 79 macaques for antibodies to enzootic primate viruses. All macaques were seronegative for herpesvirus B, simian T-cell lymphotropic virus, simian retrovirus, simian immunodeficiency virus, and rhesus cytomegalovirus.     A Formal Security Analysis of the Signal Messaging Protocol

    The Signal protocol is a cryptographic messaging protocol that provides end-to-end encryption for instant messaging in WhatsApp, Wire, and Facebook Messenger among many others, serving well over 1 billion active users. Signal includes several uncommon security properties (such as future secrecy or post-compromise security ), enabled by a novel technique called *ratcheting* in which session keys are updated with every message sent. We conduct a formal security analysis of Signal\u27s initial extended triple Diffie-Hellman (X3DH) key agreement and Double Ratchet protocols as a multi-stage authenticated key exchange protocol. We extract from the implementation a formal description of the abstract protocol, and define a security model which can capture the ratcheting key update structure as a multi-stage model where there can be a tree of stages, rather than just a sequence. We then prove the security of Signal\u27s key exchange core in our model, demonstrating several standard security properties. We have found no major flaws in the design, and hope that our presentation and results can serve as a foundation for other analyses of this widely adopted protocol
