Midi Toulousain painting and decoration, circa 1460 – 1560

La peinture du Midi toulousain des XVe et XVIe siècles n’est perçue que par quelques chefs-d’œuvre créés dans le domaine de la fresque, du vitrail, de la tapisserie ou de l’enluminure. Une enquête étendue a permis de rassembler un corpus bien plus large et de replacer l’ensemble de ces œuvres dans un contexte plus proche de la réalité documentaire, en tenant compte à la fois des différentes techniques impliquées par le métier de peintre et de la pluralité des acteurs de cette production. S’appuyant sur des sources et des œuvres inédites, cette thèse propose un regard approfondi sur le foyer de création picturale toulousain, qui fut l’un des grands centres artistique, intellectuel, économique et religieux de la France méridionale. Les conditions d’exercice de la peinture sont abordées à travers l’étude des cadres juridiques, sociaux et professionnels des métiers d’enlumineur, de peintre et de peintre-verrier, de même que par l’analyse de l’activité quotidienne des praticiens. En outre, sont mis en évidence les croisements et échanges artistiques, les traditions locales et l’apparition puis le développement du langage Renaissance, ainsi que les questions du savoir théorique et du partage de l’invention.The Midi Toulousain painting from the 15th and 16th centuries is known only through a few masterpieces from fresco, stained-glass window, tapestry or illumination. A thorough study has led to gather a much larger corpus and to place back all of the works in a context closer to documentary reality taking into account both the different techniques implied by the trade of the painter and the numerous actors of the production. Based on new sources and works, the thesis offers a thorough look at the Toulousain pictorial art which was one of the main artistic, intellectual, economic and religious centers in Southern France. The working conditions of painters are tackled through the study of judicial, social and professional frameworks surrounding the trade of illuminator, painter and glass-painter as well as through the analysis of the daily activity of the stakeholders. In addition, the artistic crossroads and exchanges as well as the local traditions and the emergence and development of the Renaissance language and the issue of theoretical knowledge and sharing of inventions are put forward throughout the thesis
