Midi Toulousain painting and decoration, circa 1460 â 1560
The Midi Toulousain painting from the 15th and 16th centuries is known only through a few masterpieces from fresco, stained-glass window, tapestry or illumination. A thorough study has led to gather a much larger corpus and to place back all of the works in a context closer to documentary reality taking into account both the different techniques implied by the trade of the painter and the numerous actors of the production. Based on new sources and works, the thesis offers a thorough look at the Toulousain pictorial art which was one of the main artistic, intellectual, economic and religious centers in Southern France. The working conditions of painters are tackled through the study of judicial, social and professional frameworks surrounding the trade of illuminator, painter and glass-painter as well as through the analysis of the daily activity of the stakeholders. In addition, the artistic crossroads and exchanges as well as the local traditions and the emergence and development of the Renaissance language and the issue of theoretical knowledge and sharing of inventions are put forward throughout the thesis
