Halting viruses in scale-free networks
The vanishing epidemic threshold for viruses spreading on scale-free networks
indicate that traditional methods, aiming to decrease a virus' spreading rate
cannot succeed in eradicating an epidemic. We demonstrate that policies that
discriminate between the nodes, curing mostly the highly connected nodes, can
restore a finite epidemic threshold and potentially eradicate a virus. We find
that the more biased a policy is towards the hubs, the more chance it has to
bring the epidemic threshold above the virus' spreading rate. Furthermore, such
biased policies are more cost effective, requiring less cures to eradicate the
virus
Too little, too late: reduced visual span and speed characterize pure alexia
Whether normal word reading includes a stage of visual processing selectively dedicated to word or letter recognition is highly debated. Characterizing pure alexia, a seemingly selective disorder of reading, has been central to this debate. Two main theories claim either that 1) Pure alexia is caused by damage to a reading specific brain region in the left fusiform gyrus or 2) Pure alexia results from a general visual impairment that may particularly affect simultaneous processing of multiple items. We tested these competing theories in 4 patients with pure alexia using sensitive psychophysical measures and mathematical modeling. Recognition of single letters and digits in the central visual field was impaired in all patients. Visual apprehension span was also reduced for both letters and digits in all patients. The only cortical region lesioned across all 4 patients was the left fusiform gyrus, indicating that this region subserves a function broader than letter or word identification. We suggest that a seemingly pure disorder of reading can arise due to a general reduction of visual speed and span, and explain why this has a disproportionate impact on word reading while recognition of other visual stimuli are less obviously affected
Born Again Protoplanetary Disk Around Mira B
The Mira AB system is a nearby (~107 pc) example of a wind accreting binary
star system. In this class of system, the wind from a mass-losing red giant
star (Mira A) is accreted onto a companion (Mira B), as indicated by an
accretion shock signature in spectra at ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths.
Using novel imaging techniques, we report the detection of emission at
mid-infrared wavelengths between 9.7 and 18.3 m from the vicinity of Mira
B but with a peak at a radial position about 10 AU closer to the primary Mira
A. We interpret the mid-infrared emission as the edge of an optically-thick
accretion disk heated by Mira A. The discovery of this new class of accretion
disk fed by M-giant mass loss implies a potential population of young planetary
systems in white-dwarf binaries which has been little explored, despite being
relatively common in the solar neighborhood.Comment: Accepted for Ap
Analytic solution of a static scale-free network model
We present a detailed analytical study of a paradigmatic scale-free network
model, the Static Model. Analytical expressions for its main properties are
derived by using the hidden variables formalism. We map the model into a
canonic hidden variables one, and solve the latter. The good agreement between
our predictions and extensive simulations of the original model suggests that
the mapping is exact in the infinite network size limit. One of the most
remarkable findings of this study is the presence of relevant disassortative
correlations, which are induced by the physical condition of absence of self

Steady-State Dynamics of the Forest Fire Model on Complex Networks
Many sociological networks, as well as biological and technological ones, can
be represented in terms of complex networks with a heterogeneous connectivity
pattern. Dynamical processes taking place on top of them can be very much
influenced by this topological fact. In this paper we consider a paradigmatic
model of non-equilibrium dynamics, namely the forest fire model, whose
relevance lies in its capacity to represent several epidemic processes in a
general parametrization. We study the behavior of this model in complex
networks by developing the corresponding heterogeneous mean-field theory and
solving it in its steady state. We provide exact and approximate expressions
for homogeneous networks and several instances of heterogeneous networks. A
comparison of our analytical results with extensive numerical simulations
allows to draw the region of the parameter space in which heterogeneous
mean-field theory provides an accurate description of the dynamics, and
enlights the limits of validity of the mean-field theory in situations where
